For closed subgroups L and R of a compact Lie group G, a left L-space X, and an L-equivariant continuous map $A:X\to G/R$, we introduce the twisted action of the equivariant cohomology $H_R^{\bullet }(\mathrm {pt},\Bbbk )$ on the equivariant cohomology $H_L^{\bullet }(X,\Bbbk )$. Considering this action as a right action, $H_L^{\bullet }(X,\Bbbk )$ becomes a bimodule together with the canonical left action of $H_L^{\bullet }(\mathrm {pt},\Bbbk )$. Using this bimodule structure, we prove an equivariant version of the Künneth isomorphism. We apply this result to the computation of the equivariant cohomologies of Bott–Samelson varieties and to a geometric construction of the bimodule morphisms between them.

We give explicit presentations of the integral equivariant cohomology of the affine Grassmannians and flag varieties in type A, arising from their natural embeddings in the corresponding infinite (Sato) Grassmannian and flag variety. These presentations are compared with results obtained by Lam and Shimozono, for rational equivariant cohomology of the affine Grassmannian, and by Larson, for the integral cohomology of the moduli stack of vector bundles on .

We calculate the integral equivariant cohomology, in terms of generators and relations, of locally standard torus orbifolds whose odd degree ordinary cohomology vanishes. We begin by studying GKM-orbifolds, which are more general, before specializing to half-dimensional torus actions.

Let $G$ denote a reductive algebraic group over $\mathbb{C}$ and $x$ a nilpotent element of its Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. The Springer variety ${{B}_{x}}$ is the closed subvariety of the flag variety $B$ of $G$ parameterizing the Borel subalgebras of $\mathfrak{g}$ containing $x$. It has the remarkable property that the Weyl group $W$ of $G$ admits a representation on the cohomology of ${{B}_{x}}$ even though $W$ rarely acts on ${{B}_{x}}$ itself. Well-known constructions of this action due to Springer and others use technical machinery from algebraic geometry. The purpose of this note is to describe an elementary approach that gives this action when $x$ is what we call parabolic-surjective. The idea is to use localization to construct an action of $W$ on the equivariant cohomology algebra $H_{s}^{*}({{B}_{x}})$, where $S$ is a certain algebraic subtorus of $G$. This action descends to ${{H}^{*}}({{B}_{x}})$ via the forgetful map and gives the desired representation. The parabolic-surjective case includes all nilpotents of type $A$ and, more generally, all nilpotents for which it is known that $W$ acts on $H_{s}^{*}({{B}_{x}})$ for some torus $S$. Our result is deduced from a general theorem describing when a group action on the cohomology of the ûxed point set of a torus action on a space lifts to the full cohomology algebra of the space.

We construct combinatorial bases of the $T$-equivariant cohomology $H_{T}^{\bullet }(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4},k)$ of the Bott–Samelson variety $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}$ under some mild restrictions on the field of coefficients $k$. These bases allow us to prove the surjectivity of the restrictions $H_{T}^{\bullet }(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4},k)\rightarrow H_{T}^{\bullet }(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}^{-1}(x),k)$ and $H_{T}^{\bullet }(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4},k)\rightarrow H_{T}^{\bullet }(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}\setminus \unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}^{-1}(x),k)$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}:\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}\rightarrow G/B$ is the canonical resolution. In fact, we also construct bases of the targets of these restrictions by picking up certain subsets of certain bases of $H_{T}^{\bullet }(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4},k)$ and restricting them to $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}^{-1}(x)$ or $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}\setminus \unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}^{-1}(x)$ respectively. As an application, we calculate the cohomology of the costalk-to-stalk embedding for the direct image $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70B}_{\ast }\text{}\underline{k}_{_{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F4}}}$. This algorithm avoids division by 2, which allows us to re-establish 2-torsion for parity sheaves in Braden’s example, Braden and Williamson [‘Modular intersection cohomology complexes on flag varieties’, Math. Z.272(3–4) (2012), 697–727].

The saturation theorem of Knutson and Tao concerns the nonvanishing of Littlewood–Richardson coefficients. In combination with work of Klyachko, it implies Horn’s conjecture about eigenvalues of sums of Hermitian matrices. This eigenvalue problem has a generalization to majorized sums of Hermitian matrices, due to S. Friedland. We further illustrate the common features between these two eigenvalue problems and their connection to Schubert calculus of Grassmannians. Our main result gives a Schubert calculus interpretation of Friedland’s problem, via equivariant cohomology of Grassmannians. In particular, we prove a saturation theorem for this setting. Our arguments employ the aforementioned work together with recent work of H. Thomas and A. Yong.

We give a brief introduction to two fundamental papers by Daniel Quillen appearing in the Annals, 1971. These papers established the foundations of equivariant cohomology and gave a qualitative description of the cohomology of an arbitrary finite group. We briefly describe some of the influence of these seminal papers in the study of cohomology and representations of finite groups, restricted Lie algebras, and related structures.

In this article, we begin by recalling the inversion formula for the convolution with the box spline. The equivariant cohomology and the equivariant $K$-theory with respect to a compact torus $G$ of various spaces associated to a linear action of $G$ in a vector space $M$ can both be described using some vector spaces of distributions, on the dual of the group $G$ or on the dual of its Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. The morphism from $K$-theory to cohomology is analyzed, and multiplication by the Todd class is shown to correspond to the operator (deconvolution) inverting the semi-discrete convolution with a box spline. Finally, the multiplicities of the index of a $G$-transversally elliptic operator on $M$ are determined using the infinitesimal index of the symbol.

In this note, we study an invariant associated with the zeros of the moment map generated by an action form, the infinitesimal index. This construction will be used to study the compactly supported equivariant cohomology of the zeros of the moment map and to give formulas for the multiplicity index map of a transversally elliptic operator.

We give a classifying theory for LG-bundles, where LG is the loop group of a compact Lie group G, and present a calculation for the string class of the universal LG-bundle. We show that this class is in fact an equivariant cohomology class and give an equivariant differential form representing it. We then use the caloron correspondence to define (higher) characteristic classes for LG-bundles and to prove a result for characteristic classes for based loop groups for the free loop group. These classes have a natural interpretation in equivariant cohomology and we give equivariant differential form representatives for the universal case in all odd dimensions.

We consider smooth actions of totally disconnected groups on simplicial complexes and compare different equivariant cohomology groups associated to such actions. Our main result is that the bivariant equivariant cohomology theory introduced by Baum and Schneider can be described using equivariant periodic cyclic homology. This provides a new approach to the construction of Baum and Schneider as well as a computation of equivariant periodic cyclic homology for a natural class of examples. In addition we discuss the relation between cosheaf homology and equivariant Bredon homology. Since the theory of Baum and Schneider generalizes cosheaf homology we finally see that all these approaches to equivariant cohomology for totally disconnected groups are closely related.

We define and study equivariant periodic cyclic homology for locally compact groups. This can be viewed as a non-commutative generalization of equivariant de Rham cohomology. Although the construction resembles the Cuntz–Quillen approach to ordinary cyclic homology, a completely new feature in the equivariant setting is the fact that the basic ingredient in the theory is not a complex in the usual sense. As a consequence, in the equivariant context only the periodic cyclic theory can be defined in complete generality. Our definition recovers particular cases studied previously by various authors. We prove that bivariant equivariant periodic cyclic homology is homotopy invariant, stable and satisfies excision in both variables. Moreover, we construct the exterior product which generalizes the obvious composition product. Finally, we prove a Green–Julg theorem in cyclic homology for compact groups and the dual result for discrete groups.

En s’aidant du travail de Duan, on en déduit une méthode de calcul des constantes de structure de la cohomologie équivariante des variétés de drapeaux (calcul de Schubert équivariant).

‘Equivariant cohomology of Bott towers and equivariant Schubert calculus’. We calculate the restrictions to fixed points of two bases of the equivariant cohomology of Bott towers, and we describe the multiplicative structure of these cohomology algebras. We build on the work of Duan to give a method to calculate the structure constants of the equivariant cohomology of the flag varieties (equivariant Schubert calculus).

Motivated by complex oriented equivariant cohomology theories, we give a natural algebraic definition of an $A$-equivariant formal group law for any abelian compact Lie group $A$. The complex orientedcohomology of the classifying space for line bundles gives an example.We also show how the choice of a complete flag gives rise to a basis and a means of calculation. This allows us to deduce thatthere is a universal ring $L_A$ for $A$-equivariant formal group laws and that it is generated by the Euler classes and the coefficients of the coproduct of the orientation. In this paper, we develop a method of localization in equivariant cohomology based on the notion of partition of unity cohomology. We apply this method in two cases. In the first case, this method gives a refinement of the localization of Atiyah–Bott and Berline–Vergne (in the frame given by Bismut). After, we consider the Hamiltonian action of a torus, and we realise, following the idea of Witten, the localization on the critical points of the square of the moment map.

A Mackey functor $M$ is a structure analogous to the representation ring functor $H \mapsto R(H)$ encoding good formal behaviour under induction and restriction. More explicitly, $M$ associates an abelian group $M(H)$ to each closed subgroup $H$ of a fixed compact Lie group $G$, and to each inclusion $K \subseteq H$ it associates a restriction map ${\rm res}^H_K:M(H) \rightarrow M(K)$ and an induction map${\rm ind}^H_K:M(K) \rightarrow M(H)$. This paper gives an analysis of the category of Mackey functors $M$ whose values are rational vector spaces: such a Mackey functor may be specified by giving a suitably continuous family consisting of a ${\Bbb Q} \pi_0(W_G(H))$-module $V(H)$ for each closed subgroup $H$ with restriction maps $V(\hat{K}) \rightarrow V(K)$ whenever $K$ is normal in $\hat{K}$ and $\hat{K}/K$ is a torus (a ‘continuous Weyl-toral module’). We show that the category of rational Mackey functors is equivalent to the category of rational continuous Weyl-toral modules. In Part II this will be used to give an algebraic analysis of the category of rational Mackey functors, showing in particular that it has homological dimension equal to the rank of the group.
