Archdeacon and Grable (1995) proved that the genus of the random graph $G\in {\mathcal{G}}_{n,p}$ is almost surely close to $pn^{2}/12$ if $p=p(n)\geqslant 3(\ln n)^{2}n^{-1/2}$. In this paper we prove an analogous result for random bipartite graphs in ${\mathcal{G}}_{n_{1},n_{2},p}$. If $n_{1}\geqslant n_{2}\gg 1$, phase transitions occur for every positive integer $i$ when $p=\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E9}((n_{1}n_{2})^{-i/(2i+1)})$. A different behaviour is exhibited when one of the bipartite parts has constant size, i.e., $n_{1}\gg 1$ and $n_{2}$ is a constant. In that case, phase transitions occur when $p=\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E9}(n_{1}^{-1/2})$ and when $p=\unicode[STIX]{x1D6E9}(n_{1}^{-1/3})$.

Let $f$ be a quasi-homogeneous polynomial with an isolated singularity in $\mathbf{C}^{n}$. We compute the length of the ${\mathcal{D}}$-modules ${\mathcal{D}}f^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}}/{\mathcal{D}}f^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}+1}$ generated by complex powers of $f$ in terms of the Hodge filtration on the top cohomology of the Milnor fiber. When $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}=-1$ we obtain one more than the reduced genus of the singularity ($\dim H^{n-2}(Z,{\mathcal{O}}_{Z})$ for $Z$ the exceptional fiber of a resolution of singularities). We conjecture that this holds without the quasi-homogeneous assumption. We also deduce that the quotient ${\mathcal{D}}f^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}}/{\mathcal{D}}f^{\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}+1}$ is nonzero when $\unicode[STIX]{x1D706}$ is a root of the $b$-function of $f$ (which Saito recently showed fails to hold in the inhomogeneous case). We obtain these results by comparing these ${\mathcal{D}}$-modules to those defined by Etingof and the second author which represent invariants under Hamiltonian flow.

We study some questions on numerical semigroups of type 2. On the one hand, we investigate the relation between the genus and the Frobenius number. On the other hand, for two fixed positive integers g1, g2, we give necessary and sufficient conditions in order to have a numerical semigroup S such that {g1, g2} is the set of its pseudo-Frobenius numbers and, moreover, we explicitly build families of such numerical semigroups.

We apply the concept of braiding sequences to link polynomials to show polynomial growth bounds on the derivatives of the Jones polynomial evaluated on S1 and of the Brandt–Lickorish–Millett–Ho polynomial evaluated on [–2, 2] on alternating and positive knots of given genus. For positive links, boundedness criteria for the coefficients of the Jones, HOMFLY and Kauffman polynomials are derived. (This is a continuation of the paper ‘Applications of braiding sequences. We give an explicit treatment of cubic function fields of characteristic at least five. This includes an efficient technique for converting such a field into standard form, formulae for the field discriminant and the genus, simple necessary and sufficient criteria for non-singularity of the defining curve, and a characterization of all triangular integral bases. Our main result is a description of the signature of any rational place in a cubic extension that involves only the defining curve and the order of the base field. All these quantities only require simple polynomial arithmetic as well as a few square-free polynomial factorizations and, in some cases, square and cube root extraction modulo an irreducible polynomial. We also illustrate why and how signature computation plays an important role in computing the class number of the function field. This in turn has applications to the study of zeros of zeta functions of function fields.

The cosmopolitan and often ecologically dominant genus Terschellingia (Nematoda: Linhomoeidae), with 38 nominal species, is taxonomically a problematic taxon. Its species show high morphological plasticity, possess few diagnostic characters and identification keys are lacking. A revision of the genus was carried out based on morphological and morphometric data from the literature and from observations of specimens collected in Cienfuegos Bay, Caribbean Sea, Cuba. The diagnosis of the genus Terschellingia is emended. Of the current 38 nominal species, 15 are considered as valid species based on morphological characters related to size and position of amphidial fovea, presence/position of cephalic and cervical setae, presence/size/shape of pharyngeal bulb, shape of spicular apparatus and shape of tail. Tabular and pictorial keys were provided based on these characters. Three sympatric species: T. communis, T. gourbaultae and T. longicaudata were redescribed based on recently collected Cuban specimens. Each of them showed relatively large differences in body size in comparison with the respective type specimens, suggesting possible variation due to local environmental differences. The highest intraspecific variation pertains for the most widely spread cosmopolitan species T. longicaudata, suggesting that morphological plasticity enhanced adaptation to different environmental conditions. The notable taxonomic inflation within the genus (14 species inquirendae, 9 junior synonyms), probably also present in other highly specious genera of marine nematodes, can lead to an overestimation of the alpha-diversity.

In this paper, we prove that if K is any periodic link in S3 whose quotient link is a 2-bridge link, then one half of the degree of the reduced Alexander polynomial, the minimal genus, the free genus and the canonical genus of K are all the same. We also give criteria to determine whether a given periodic link has a 2-bridge link quotient and some properties of this kind of periodic link.

Using the Fiedler–Polyak–Viro Gauß diagram formulae we study the Vassiliev invariants of degree 2 and 3 on almost positive knots. As a consequence we show that the number of almost positive knots of a given genus or unknotting number grows polynomially in the crossing number, and also recover and extend, inter alia to their untwisted Whitehead doubles, previous results on the polynomials and signatures of such knots. In particular, we prove that there are no achiral almost positive knots and classify all almost positive diagrams of the unknot. We give an application to contact geometry (Legendrian knots) and property P.
