This paper presents the results of numerical investigations into the acceleration of heavy ions by a multi-PW laser pulse of ultra-relativistic intensity, to be available with the Extreme Light Infrastructure lasers currently being built in Europe. In the numerical simulations, performed with the use of a multi-dimensional (2D3V) particle-in-cell code, the thorium target with a thickness of 50 or 200 nm was irradiated by a circularly polarized 20 fs laser pulse with an energy of ~150 J and an intensity of 1023 W/cm2. It was found that the detailed run of the ion acceleration process depends on the target thickness, though in both considered cases the radiation pressure acceleration (RPA) stage of ion acceleration is followed by a sheath acceleration stage, with a significant role in the post-RPA stage being played by the ballistic movement of ions. This hybrid acceleration mechanism leads to the production of an ultra-short (sub-picosecond) multi-GeV ion beam with a wide energy spectrum and an extremely high intensity (>1021 W/cm2) and ion fluence (>1017 cm−2). Heavy ion beams of such extreme parameters are hardly achievable in conventional RF-driven ion accelerators, so they could open the avenues to new areas of research in nuclear and high energy density physics, and possibly in other scientific domains.

Recent research activities relevant to high energy density physics (HEDP) driven by the heavy ion beam at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences are presented. Radiography of static objects with the fast extracted high energy carbon ion beam from the Cooling Storage Ring is discussed. Investigation of the low energy heavy ion beam and plasma interaction is reported. With HEDP research as one of the main goals, the project HIAF (High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility), proposed by the Institute of Modern Physics as the 12th five-year-plan of China, is introduced.

The high energy loss of heavy ions in matter as well as the small angular scattering makes heavy ion beams an excellent tool to produce almost cylindrical and homogeneously excited volumes in matter. This aspect can be used to pump short wavelength lasers. For the first time, a beam of heavy ions was used to pump a short wavelength gas laser in an experiment performed at the GSI ion accelerator facility in December 2005. In this experiment, the well-known KrF* excimer laser was pumped with an intense uranium beam. Pulses of an uranium beam compressed down to 110 ns (full width at half maximum) with initial particle energy of 250 MeV per nucleon were stopped inside a gas laser cell. A mixture of an excimer laser premix gas (95.5%Kr + 0.5%F2) and a buffer gas (Ar) in different proportions was used as the laser gas. The maximum beam intensity reached in the experiment was 2.5 × 109 particles per pulse, which resulted in 34 J/g specific energy deposited in the laser gas. The laser effect on the transition at λ = 248 nm has been successfully demonstrated by various independent methods. There, the laser threshold was reached with a beam intensity of 1.2 × 109 particles per pulse, and the energy of the laser pulse of about 2 mJ was measured for an ion beam intensity of 2 × 109 particles per pulse. As a next step, it is planned to reduce the laser wavelength down to the vacuum ultraviolet spectral region, and to proceed to the excimer lasers of the pure rare gases. The perspectives for such experiments are discussed and the detailed estimations for Xe and Kr cases are given. We believe that the use of heavy ion beams as a pumping source may lead to new pumping schemes on the higher lying level transitions and considerably shorter wavelengths, which rely on the high cross sections for multiple ionization of the target species.

In order to realize an effective implosion, the beam illumination non-uniformity and implosion non-uniformity must be suppressed to less than a few percent. In this paper, a direct-indirect mixture implosion mode is proposed and discussed in heavy ion beam (HIB) inertial confinement fusion (HIF) in order to release sufficient fusion energy in a robust manner. On the other hand, the HIB illumination non-uniformity depends strongly on a target displacement (dz) in a reactor. In a direct-driven implosion mode dz of ∼20 μm was tolerance and in an indirect-implosion mode dz of ∼100 μm was allowable. In the direct-indirect mixture mode target, a low-density foam layer is inserted, and radiation is confined in the foam layer. In the foam layer the radiation transport is expected in the lateral direction for the HIB illumination non-uniformity smoothing. Two-dimensional implosion simulations are performed and show that the HIB illumination non-uniformity is well smoothed. The simulation results present that a large pellet displacement of ∼300 μm is tolerable in order to obtain sufficient fusion energy in HIF.

This paper reports on the status of the PHELIX petawatt laser which is built at the Gesellschaft fuer Schwerionenforschung (GSI) in close collaboration with the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and the Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique (CEA) in France. First experiments carried out with the chirped pulse amplification (CPA) front-end will also be briefly reviewed.

The compression of a cryogenic hydrogen cylindrical sample contained in a hollow gold target driven by an intense co-axial uranium beam has been studied. The ion distribution is assumed to be Gaussian in space and parabolic in time. The hydrodynamics of the target is analyzed by means of one- and two-dimensional numerical simulations. A parametric study is performed to achieve the maximum average hydrogen density and temperature as a function of the sample radius, total number of ions and spread of the spatial ion distribution. A window in the beam-target parameters for which hydrogen compression is higher than a factor of 10 and temperature is below 0.2 eV has been found by considering a single bunch that contains 2 × 1011 uranium ions delivered in 100 ns. In this range of high densities and low temperatures, it is expected that hydrogen may become metallic.

Numerical analysis of the compression of a cylindrical cryogenic hydrogen sample surrounded by a high-density metallic shell driven by a heavy ion beam has been performed. The beam power profile is assumed to be parabolic in time and Gaussian in space and is made of uranium ions with a kinetic energy of 2.7 GeV/u. The beam center is positioned off axis and rotates around the target axis to provide a uniform annular energy deposition area. An acceptable symmetry in pressure is achieved if the number of revolutions is equal to or larger than 10. The maximum density and pressure of the hydrogen sample is studied as a function of the spread of the beam power Gaussian distribution and the rotation radius. This configuration leads to compressions of the order of 10 and a temperature of a few thousand Kelvin in hydrogen.

Key issues of heavy ion beam (HIB) inertial confinement fusion (ICF) include an efficient stable beam transport, beam focusing, uniform fuel pellet implosion, and so on. To realize a HIB fine focus on a fuel pellet, space-charge neutralization of incident focusing HIB is required at the HIB final transport just after a final focusing element in an HIB accelerator. In this article, an insulator annular tube guide is proposed at the final transport part, through which a HIB is transported. The physical mechanism of HIB charge neutralization based on an insulator annular guide is as follows: A local electric field created by HIB induces local discharges, and plasma is produced on the insulator inner surface. Then electrons are extracted from the plasma by the HIB net space charge. The electrons emitted neutralize the HIB space charge well.

The aim of the presented experiments is to study the transport of a heavy ion beam in a high-current plasma channel. The discharge is initiated in NH3 gas at pressures between 2 and 20 mbar by a line-tuned CO2 laser. A stable discharge over the entire electrode gap (0.5 m) was achieved for currents up to 60 kA. Concerning the ion beam transport, the magnetic field distribution inside the plasma channel has to be known. The ion-optical properties of the plasma channel have been investigated using different species of heavy ions (C, Ni, Au, U) with 11.4 MeV/u during six runs at the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschungs-UNILAC linear accelerator. The high magnetic field allowed the accomplishment of one complete betatron oscillation along the discharge channel. The results obtained up to now are very promising and suggest that, by scaling the discharge gap to longer distances, the beam transport over several meters is possible with negligible losses.

At the Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung (GSI, Darmstadt) intense beams of energetic heavy ions have been used to generate high-energy-density (HED) state in matter by impact on solid targets. Recently, we have developed a new method by which we use the same heavy ion beam that heats the target to provide information about the physical state of the interior of the target (Varentsov et al., 2001). This is accomplished by measuring the energy loss dynamics (ELD) of the beam emerging from the back surface of the target. For this purpose, a new time-resolving energy loss spectrometer (scintillating Bragg-peak (SBP) spectrometer) has been developed. In our experiments we have measured energy loss dynamics of intense beams of 238U, 86Kr, 40Ar, and 18O ions during the interaction with solid rare-gas targets, such as solid Ne and solid Xe. We observed continuous reduction in the energy loss during the interaction time due to rapid hydrodynamic response of the ion-beam-heated target matter. These are the first measurements of this kind. Two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations were carried out using the beam and target parameters of the experiments. The conducted research has established that the ELD measurement technique is an excellent diagnostic method for HED matter. It specifically allows for direct and quantitative comparison with the results of hydrodynamic simulations, providing experimental data for verification of computer codes and underlying theoretical models. The ELD measurements will be used as a standard diagnostics in the future experiments on investigation of the HED matter induced by intense heavy ion beams, such as the HI-HEX (Heavy Ion Heating and EXpansion) EOS studies (Hoffmann et al., 2002).

The dynamics of low entropy weak shock waves induced by heavy ion beams in solid targets was investigated by means of a schlieren technique. The targets consist of a metallic absorber for the beam energy deposition followed by a plexiglass block for optical observations. Multiple waves propagating with supersonic velocities at 15 kbar pressures were observed in the plexiglass, for pressures of up to 70 kbar numerically calculated in the absorbers. Pressures in the megabar ranges are predicted for a near future beam upgrade, enabling studies of phase transition to metallic states of H, Kr, and Xe.
