The discovery that blazars dominate the extra-galactic $\gamma$-ray sky is a triumph in the Fermi era. However, the exact location of $\gamma$-ray emission region still remains in debate. Low-synchrotron-peaked blazars (LSPs) are estimated to produce high-energy radiation through the external Compton process, thus their emission regions are closely related to the external photon fields. We employed the seed factor approach proposed by Georganopoulos et al. It directly matches the observed seed factor of each LSP with the characteristic seed factors of external photon fields to locate the $\gamma$-ray emission region. A sample of 1 138 LSPs with peak frequencies and peak luminosities was adopted to plot a histogram distribution of observed seed factors. We also collected some spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of historical flare states to investigate the variation of $\gamma$-ray emission region. Those SEDs were fitted by both quadratic and cubic functions using the Markov-chain Monte Carlo method. Furthermore, we derived some physical parameters of blazars and compared them with the constraint of internal $\gamma\gamma$-absorption. We find that dusty torus dominates the soft photon fields of LSPs and most $\gamma$-ray emission regions of LSPs are located at 1–10 pc. The soft photon fields could also transition from dusty torus to broad line region and cosmic microwave background in different flare states. Our results suggest that the cubic function is better than the quadratic function to fit the SEDs.

ALMA observations with angular resolution in the range ∼20–200 mas demonstrate that emission at 268.149 and 262.898 GHz in the (0,2,0) and (0,1,0) vibrationally excited states of water are widespread in the inner envelope of O-rich AGB stars and red supergiants. These transitions are either quasi-thermally excited, in which case they can be used to estimate the molecular column density, or show signs of maser emission with a brightness temperature of ∼103–107 K in a few stars. The highest spatial resolution observations probe the inner few stellar radii environment, up to ∼10–12 R* in general, while the mid resolution data probe more thermally excited gas at larger extents. In several stars, high velocity components are observed at 268.149 GHz which may be caused by the kinematic perturbations induced by a companion. Radiative transfer models of water are revisited to specify the physical conditions leading to 268.149 and 262.898 GHz maser excitation.

Therecently discovered massive binary system Apep is the most powerful synchrotron emitter among the known Galactic colliding-wind binaries. This makes this particular system of great interest to investigate stellar winds and the non-thermal processes associated with their shocks. This source was detected at various radio bands, and in addition the wind-collision region was resolved by means of very-long baseline interferometric observations. We use a non-thermal emission model for colliding-wind binaries to derive physical properties of this system. The observed morphology in the resolved maps allows us to estimate the system projection angle on the sky to be $\psi \approx 85^\circ$ . The observed radio flux densities also allow us to characterise both the intrinsic synchrotron spectrum of the source and its modifications due to free–free absorption in the stellar winds at low frequencies; from this, we derive mass–loss rates of the stars of $\dot{M}_\mathrm{WN} \approx 4\times10^{-5}\;\mathrm{M}_\odot\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$ and $\dot{M}_\mathrm{WC} \approx 2.9\times10^{-5}\;\mathrm{M}_\odot\,\mathrm{yr}^{-1}$ . Finally, the broadband spectral energy distribution is calculated for different combinations of the remaining free parameters, namely the intensity of the magnetic field and the injected power in non-thermal particles. We show that the degeneracy of these two parameters can be solved with observations in the high-energy domain, most likely in the hard X-rays but also possibly in $\gamma$ -rays under favourable conditions.

We present a broadband radio study of the transient jets ejected from the black hole candidate X-ray binary MAXI J1535–571, which underwent a prolonged outburst beginning on 2017 September 2. We monitored MAXI J1535–571 with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) at frequencies from 119 to 186 MHz over six epochs from 2017 September 20 to 2017 October 14. The source was quasi-simultaneously observed over the frequency range 0.84–19 GHz by UTMOST (the Upgraded Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope) the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), and the Australian Long Baseline Array (LBA). Using the LBA observations from 2017 September 23, we measured the source size to be $34\pm1$ mas. During the brightest radio flare on 2017 September 21, the source was detected down to 119 MHz by the MWA, and the radio spectrum indicates a turnover between 250 and 500 MHz, which is most likely due to synchrotron self-absorption (SSA). By fitting the radio spectrum with a SSA model and using the LBA size measurement, we determined various physical parameters of the jet knot (identified in ATCA data), including the jet opening angle ( $\phi_{\rm op} = 4.5\pm1.2^{\circ}$ ) and the magnetic field strength ( $B_{\rm s} = 104^{+80}_{-78}$ mG). Our fitted magnetic field strength agrees reasonably well with that inferred from the standard equipartition approach, suggesting the jet knot to be close to equipartition. Our study highlights the capabilities of the Australian suite of radio telescopes to jointly probe radio jets in black hole X-ray binaries via simultaneous observations over a broad frequency range, and with differing angular resolutions. This suite allows us to determine the physical properties of X-ray binary jets. Finally, our study emphasises the potential contributions that can be made by the low-frequency part of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA-Low) in the study of black hole X-ray binaries.

We detect and characterise extended, diffuse radio emission from galaxy clusters at 168 MHz within the Epoch of Reionization 0-h field: a $45^{\circ} \times 45^{\circ}$ region of the southern sky centred on R. A.${}= 0^{\circ}$, decl.${}=-27^{\circ}$. We detect 29 sources of interest; a newly detected halo in Abell 0141; a newly detected relic in Abell 2751; 4 new halo candidates and a further 4 new relic candidates; and a new phoenix candidate in Abell 2556. Additionally, we find nine clusters with unclassifiable, diffuse steep-spectrum emission as well as a candidate double relic system associated with RXC J2351.0-1934. We present measured source properties such as their integrated flux densities, spectral indices ($\alpha$, where $S_\nu \propto \nu^\alpha$), and sizes where possible. We find several of the diffuse sources to have ultra-steep spectra including the halo in Abell 0141, if confirmed, showing $\alpha \leq -2.1 \pm 0.1$ with the present data making it one of the steepest-spectrum haloes known. Finally, we compare our sample of haloes with previously detected haloes and revisit established scaling relations of the radio halo power ($P_{1.4}$) with the cluster X-ray luminosity ($L_{\textrm{X}}$) and mass ($M_{500}$). We find that the newly detected haloes and candidate haloes are consistent with the $P_{1.4}$–$L_{\textrm{X}}$ and $P_{1.4}$–$M_{500}$ relations and see an increase in scatter in the previously found relations with increasing sample size likely caused by inhomogeneous determination of $P_{1.4}$ across the full halo sample. We show that the MWA is capable of detecting haloes and relics within most of the galaxy clusters within the Planck catalogue of Sunyaev–Zel’dovich sources depending on exact halo or relic properties.

Massive, early-type stars have been detected as radio sources for many decades. Their thermal winds radiate free–free continuum and in binary systems hosting a colliding-wind region, non-thermal emission has also been detected. To date, the most abundant data have been collected from frequencies higher than 1 GHz. We present here the results obtained from observations at 325 and 610 MHz, carried out with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, of all known Wolf-Rayet and O-type stars encompassed in area of $\sim$ 15 sq degrees centred on the Cygnus region. We report on the detection of 11 massive stars, including both Wolf-Rayet and O-type systems. The measured flux densities at decimeter wavelengths allowed us to study the radio spectrum of the binary systems and to propose a consistent interpretation in terms of physical processes affecting the wide-band radio emission from these objects. WR 140 was detected at 610 MHz, but not at 325 MHz, very likely because of the strong impact of free–free absorption (FFA). We also report—for the first time—on the detection of a colliding-wind binary system down to 150 MHz, pertaining to the system of WR 146, making use of complementary information extracted from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research GMRT Sky Survey. Its spectral energy distribution clearly shows the turnover at a frequency of about 600 MHz, that we interpret to be due to FFA. Finally, we report on the identification of two additional particle-accelerating colliding-wind binaries, namely Cyg OB2 12 and ALS 15108 AB.

The hot accretion flow around Kerr black holes is strongly magnetized. Magnetic field loops sustained by a surrounding accretion disk can close within the event horizon. We performed particle-in-cell simulations in Kerr metric to capture the dynamics of the electromagnetic field and of the ambient collisionless plasma in this coupled configuration. We find that a hybrid magnetic topology develops with a closed magnetosphere co-existing with open field lines threading the horizon reminiscent of the Blandford-Znajek solution. Further in the disk, highly inclined open magnetic field lines can launch a magnetically-driven wind. While the plasma is essentially force-free, a current sheet forms above the disk where magnetic reconnection produces macroscopic plasmoids and accelerates particles up to relativistic Lorentz factors. A highly dynamic Y-point forms on the furthest closed magnetic field line, with episodic reconnection events responsible for transient synchrotron emission and coronal heating.

We examined the latest data release from the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison Widefield Array (GLEAM) survey covering 345° < l < 60° and 180° < l < 240°, using these data and that of the Widefield Infrared Survey Explorer to follow up proposed candidate Supernova Remnant (SNR) from other sources. Of the 101 candidates proposed in the region, we are able to definitively confirm ten as SNRs, tentatively confirm two as SNRs, and reclassify five as H ii regions. A further two are detectable in our images but difficult to classify; the remaining 82 are undetectable in these data. We also investigated the 18 unclassified Multi-Array Galactic Plane Imaging Survey (MAGPIS) candidate SNRs, newly confirming three as SNRs, reclassifying two as H ii regions, and exploring the unusual spectra and morphology of two others.

Blazars are radio-loud Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) with relativistic jets oriented towards the observer’s line-of-sight. Based on their optical spectra, blazars may be classified as flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) or BL Lacs. FSRQs are more luminous blazars with both narrow and broad emission and absorption lines, while BL Lacs are less luminous and featureless. Recent studies show that blazars dominate (˜93%) the already-identified EGRET sources (142), suggesting that among the unidentified sources (129) there could still be faint blazars. Due to the presence of a strong non-thermal component inside their jets, blazars are found to display a weaker depression at ˜4000 Å (K 4000 ≤ 0.4). In this study, we aimed at determining the K 4000 break for a selected sample among the potential blazar candidates from unidentified EGRET sources to confirm their blazar nature. We used two blazar candidates, 3EG J1800-0146 and 3EG J1709-0817 associated with radio counterparts, J1802-0207 and J1713-0817, respectively. Their optical counterparts were obtained through spectroscopic observations using Robert Stobie spectrograph (RSS) at the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) in South Africa. The observed Ca II H & K lines depression at ˜4000 Å in spectra of these sources show a shallow depression, K 4000 = 0.35 ± 0.02 and 0.24 ± 0.01, respectively, suggesting that these sources are blazar candidates. Moreover, the redshifts z = 0.165 and 0.26 measured in their spectra confirm the extragalactic nature of these sources.

While gas-phase reactions and surface reactions on bare carbonaceous or siliceous dust grains contribute to cosmic chemistry, the energetic processing of cosmic ices via photochemistry and radiation chemistry is thought to be the dominant mechanism for the cosmic synthesis of prebiotic molecules. Because most previous laboratory astrochemical studies have used light sources that produce >10 eV photons and are, therefore, capable of ionizing cosmic ice analogs, discerning the role of photochemistry vs. radiation chemistry in astrochemistry is challenging. By using a source whose photon energy does not exceed 8 eV, we have studied ammonia and methanol cosmic ice reactions attributable solely to photochemistry. We compare these results to those obtained in the same ultrahigh vacuum chamber with 1 keV electrons which instead initiate radiation chemistry in cosmic ice analogs.

Sensitive (noise ∼16 μJy beam−1), high-resolution (∼10″) MeerKAT observations of show that its giant lobes have a double-shell morphology, where dense filaments are embedded in a diffuse and extended cocoon, while the central radio jets are confined within the host galaxy. The spectral radio properties of the lobes and jets of reveal that its nuclear activity is rapidly flickering. Multiple episodes of nuclear activity must have formed the radio lobes, for which the last stopped 12 Myr ago. More recently (∼3 Myr ago), a less powerful and short (≲1 Myr) phase of nuclear activity generated the central jets. The distribution and kinematics of the neutral and molecular gas in the centre give insights on the interaction between the recurrent nuclear activity and the surrounding interstellar medium.

Galactic microquasars have been detected at very-high-energies (VHE) (> 100 GeV) and the particle acceleration mechanisms that produce this emission are not yet well-understood. Here we investigate a hadronic emission scenario where cosmic-rays (CRs) are accelerated in magnetic reconnection events by the turbulent, advected-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) believed to be present in the hard state of black hole binaries. We present Monte Carlo simulations of CR emission plus γ-γ and inverse Compton cascades, injecting CRs with a total energy consistent with the magnetic energy of the plasma. The background gas density, magnetic, and photon fields where CRs propagate and interact are modelled with general relativistic (GR), magneto-hydrodynamical simulations together with GR radiative transfer calculations. Our approach is applied to the microquasar Cygnus X-1, where we show a model configuration consistent with the VHE upper limits provided by MAGIC collaboration.

We propose that two emission regions are present in the decelerating jet of radio galaxy at this same moment. Isotropic electrons, in the farther blob as counted along the jet, up-scatter mono-directional soft radiation, from the closer blob, at a relatively large angles to the jet axis. Such model can naturally explain the large angle gamma-ray emission observed from radio galaxies.

Observations at high-energies are important to define the first stages of the evolution of extragalactic radio sources and to characterize the interstellar medium of their host galaxies. In some of the X-ray-observed Compact Symmetric Objects (CSOs, among the youngest and most compact radio galaxies), we measured values of the total hydrogen column densities large enough to slow or prevent the radio source growth. The γ-ray window has the potential to constrain the non-thermal contribution of jets and lobes to the total high-energy emission. However, so far, young radio sources remain elusive in γ-rays, with only a handful of detections (or candidates) reported by Fermi. I present our γ-ray study of the CSO PKS 1718–649, and draw comparison with the restarted, γ-ray detected, radio galaxy 3C 84.

Very high energy (VHE) emission has been detected from the radio galaxy NGC1275, establishing it as a potential cosmic-ray (CR) accelerator and a high energy neutrino source. We here study neutrino and γ-ray emission from the core of NGC1275 simulating the interactions of CRs assumed to be accelerated by magnetic reconnection, with the accreting plasma environment. To do this, we combine (i) numerical general relativistic (GR) magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD), (ii) Monte Carlo GR leptonic radiative transfer and, (iii) Monte Carlo interaction of CRs. A leptonic emission model that reproduces the SED in the [103-1010.5] eV energy range is used as the background target for photo-pion interactions+electromagnetic cascading. CRs injected with the power-law index κ=1.3 produce an emission profile that matches the VHE tail of NGC1275. The associated neutrino flux, below the IceCube limits, peaks at ∼PeV energies. However, coming from a single source, this neutrino flux may be an over-estimation.

The standard shock acceleration model of pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) does not account for the hard spectrum in radio wavelengths. The origin of the radio-emitting particles is also important to determine the pair production efficiency in the pulsar magnetosphere. Here, we propose a possible resolution for the particle energy distribution in PWNe; the radio-emitting particles are not accelerated at the pulsar wind termination shock but are stochastically accelerated by turbulence inside PWNe. We upgrade our past one-zone spectral evolution model including the energy diffusion, i.e., the stochastic acceleration, and apply to the Crab Nebula. For a particle injection to the stochastic acceleration process, we consider the continuous injection from the supernova ejecta or the impulsive injection associated with supernova explosion. The observed broadband spectrum and the decay of the radio flux are reproduced by tuning the amount of the particle injected to the stochastic acceleration process. Our results imply that some unveiled mechanisms, such as back reaction to the turbulence, are required to make the energies of stochastically and shock accelerated particles comparable.

A standard model for the visibility of pulsar radio emission is based on the assumption that the emission is confined to a narrow cone about the tangent to a dipolar field line. The widely accepted rotating vector model (RVM) is an approximation in which the line of sight is fixed and the field line is not strictly tangent to it. We refer to an exact treatment (Gangadhara, 2004) as the tangent model. In the tangent model (but not in the RVM) the visible point changes as a function of pulsar rotational phase, ψ, defining a trajectory on a sphere of radius r. We solve for the trajectory and for the angular velocity of the visible point around it. We note the recent claim that this motion is observable using interstellar holography (Pen et al., 2014). We estimate the error introduced by use of the RVM and find that it is significant for pulsars with emission over a wide range of ψ. The RVM tends to underestimate the range of ψ over which emission is visible. We suggest that the geometry alone strongly favors the visible pulsar radio being emitted at a heights more than ten percent of the light-cylinder distance, where our neglect of retardation effects becomes significant.

The nearby active galaxy NGC 1275, has been widely detected from radio to gamma rays. Its spectral energy distribution (SED) shows a double-peak feature, which is well explained by synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model. However, recent TeV detections might suggest that very-high-energy γ-rays (E⩾100 GeV) may not have a leptonic origin. We test a lepto-hadronic model to describe the whole SED through SSC emission and neutral pion decay resulting from pγ interactions. Also, we estimate the neutrino events expected in a km3 Cherenkov telescope.

The emission of steady compact jets observed in the hard spectral state of X-ray binaries is likely to be powered by internal shocks caused by fluctuations of the outflow velocity. The dynamics of the internal shocks and the resulting spectral energy distribution (SED) of the jet is very sensitive to the shape of the Power Spectral Density (PSD) of the fluctuations of the jet Lorentz factor. It turns out that Lorentz factor fluctuations injected at the base of the jet with a flicker noise power spectrum (i.e. P(f) ∝1/f) naturally produce the canonical flat SED observed from radio to IR band in X-ray binary systems in the hard state. This model also predicts a strong, wavelength dependent, variability that resembles the observed one. In particular, strong sub-second variability is predicted in the infrared and optical bands. The assumed fluctuations of the jet Lorentz factor are likely to be triggered by the variability of the accretion flow which is best traced by the X-ray emission. In the case of GX339-4 for which high quality and simultaneous multi-wavelength data are available, we performed simulations assuming that the fluctuation of the jet Lorentz factor have the same PSD as the observed X-ray PSD. The synthetic SED calculated under this assumption provides a remarkable match to the observed radio to IR SED. In this case the model also produces strong mid-infrared spectral variability that is comparable to that reported in this source.

Recent measurements of frequency-dependent shift of radio-core locations indicate that the ratio of the magnetic to kinetic energy flux (the σ parameter) is of the order of unity. These results are consistent with predictions of magnetically-arrested-disk (MAD) models of a jet formation, but contradict the predictions of leptonic models of γ-ray production in luminous blazars. We demonstrate this discrepancy by computing the γ-ray-to-synchrotron luminosity ratio (the q parameter) as a function of a distance from the black hole for different values of σ and using both spherical and planar models for broad-line region and dusty torus. We find that it is impossible to reproduce observed q ≫ 1 for jets with σ ≥ 1. This may indicate that blazar radiation is produced in reconnection layers or in spines of magnetically stratified jets.
