This paper proposes signal detection methods for frequency domain equalization (FDE) based overloaded multiuser multiple input multiple output (MU-MIMO) systems for uplink Internet of things (IoT) environments, where a lot of IoT terminals are served by a base station having less number of antennas than that of IoT terminals. By using the fact that the transmitted signal vector has the discreteness and the group sparsity, we propose a convex discreteness and group sparsity aware (DGS) optimization problem for the signal detection. We provide an optimization algorithm for the DGS optimization on the basis of the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). Moreover, we extend the DGS optimization into weighted DGS (W-DGS) optimization and propose an iterative approach named iterative weighted DGS (IW-DGS), where we iteratively solve the W-DGS optimization problem with the update of the parameters in the objective function. We also discuss the computational complexity of the proposed IW-DGS and show that we can reduce the order of the complexity by using the structure of the channel matrix. Simulation results show that the symbol error rate (SER) performance of the proposed method is close to that of the oracle zero forcing (ZF) method, which perfectly knows the activity of each IoT terminal.

Parents are the first to indicate concerns about their child’s development in up to 80% of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). They often notice symptoms related to ASD around the first two years, but the average age of diagnosis is 3.5 years old. This study examined the relationships between parents’ early concerns and the time lag between suspicion and diagnosis. Forty-eight Spanish-speaking families were enrolled in this study. Parents were asked about early signs that made them think that their child could possibly have ASD. Mediation analyses showed that the child’s age at suspicion mediated between sibling status and the time lag between suspicion and a formal diagnosis (β = –.53, p < .01). Having another child with typical development accelerated parents’ detection of ASD signs (β = –.62, p < .001). The number of social-communication concerns that parents detected mediated this relationship (β = –.28, p < .01). Parents who reported more social-communication concerns perceived these signs earlier, but have to cope with a longer time lag until diagnosis than those who reported more concerns related to restrictive and repetitive behaviors and interests, or other developmental concerns. Moreover, this relationship between concerns of ASD and the diagnoses was explained by the child’s age. Training pediatricians on how to respond to parent questions and concerns could reduce the time lag between parents’ concerns and diagnosis of ASD.

Sensory analysis is that initial, preconscious stage of perception at which primitive features (edges, temporal discontinuities, and periodicities) are picked out from the random fluctuations that characterize the physical stimulation of sensory receptors. Sensory analysis may be studied by means of signal-detection, psychometric-function, and threshold experiments, and Sensory Analysis presents a succinct, quasi-quantitative account of the phenomena revealed thereby. This account covers all five sensory modalities, emphasising the similarities between them.

A succinct account depends on identifying simple principles of wide generality, of which the most fundamental are that (a) sensory discriminations are differentially coupled to the physical stimuli and that (b) small stimuli are subject to a square-law transform which makes them less detectable than they would otherwise be. These two principles are established by comparisons between different configurations of two stimulus levels to be discriminated; they are realized within a simple physical-analogue model which affords certain low-level comparisons with neurophysiological observation. That physical-analogue model consists of a sequence of elementary operations on the stimulus constituting a stage of sensory processing. The concatenation of two or three stages in cascade accommodates an increased range of experimental phenomena, especially the detection of sinusoidal gratings.

This précis is organized in three parts: Part I surveys Sensory Analysis as economically as may be, beginning from the simplest, most fundamental ideas and working toward phenomena of increasing complexity. A rather shorter Part II reviews the most important alternative models addressed to some part or other of the phenomena surveyed. Finally, a very short Part III contributes some metatheoretic remarks on the function of a theory of sensory discrimination.

The study of memory is witnessing a spirited clash between proponents of traditional laboratory research and those advocating a more naturalistic approach to the study of “real-life” or “everyday” memory. The debate has generally centered on the “what” (content), “where” (context), and “how” (methods) of memory research. In this target article, we argue that the controversy discloses a further, more fundamental breach between two underlying memory metaphors, each having distinct implications for memory theory and assessment: Whereas traditional memory research has been dominated by the storehouse metaphor, leading to a focus on the number of items remaining in store and accessible to memory, the recent wave of everyday memory research has shifted toward a correspondence metaphor, focusing on the accuracy of memory in representing past events. The correspondence metaphor calls for a research approach that differs from the traditional one in important respects: in emphasizing the intentional –representational function of memory, in addressing the wholistic and graded aspects of memory correspondence, in taking an output-bound assessment perspective, and in allowing more room for the operation of subject-controlled metamemory processes and motivational factors. This analysis can help tie together soine of the what, where, and how aspects of the “real-life/laboratory” controversy. More important, however, by explicating the unique metatheoretical foundation of the accuracy-oriented approach to memory we aim to promote a more effective exploitation of the correspondence metaphor in both naturalistic and laboratory research contexts.

Relay cells of the lateral geniculate nucleus respond to visual stimuli in one of two modes: burst and tonic. The burst mode depends on the activation of a voltage-dependent, Ca2+ conductance underlying the low threshold spike. This conductance is inactivated at depolarized membrane potentials, but when activated from hyperpolarized levels, it leads to a large, triangular, nearly all-or-none depolarization. Typically, riding its crest is a high-frequency barrage of action potentials. Low threshold spikes thus provide a nonlinear amplification allowing hyperpolarized relay neurons to respond to depolarizing inputs, including retinal EPSPs. In contrast, the tonic mode is characterized by a steady stream of unitary action potentials that more linearly reflects the visual stimulus. In this study, we tested possible differences in detection between response modes of 103 geniculate neurons by constructing receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves for responses to visual stimuli (drifting sine-wave gratings and flashing spots). Detectability was determined from the ROC curves by computing the area under each curve, known as the ROC area. Most cells switched between modes during recording, evidently due to small shifts in membrane potential that affected the activation state of the low threshold spike. We found that the more often a cell responded in burst mode, the larger its ROC area. This was true for responses to optimal and nonoptimal visual stimuli, the latter including nonoptimal spatial frequencies and low stimulus contrasts. The larger ROC areas associated with burst mode were due to a reduced spontaneous activity and roughly equivalent level of visually evoked response when compared to tonic mode. We performed a within-cell analysis on a subset of 22 cells that switched modes during recording. Every cell, whether tested with a low contrast or high contrast visual stimulus exhibited a larger ROC area during its burst response mode than during its tonic mode. We conclude that burst responses better support signal detection than do tonic responses. Thus, burst responses, while less linear and perhaps less useful in providing a detailed analysis of visual stimuli, improve target detection. The tonic mode, with its more linear response, seems better suited for signal analysis rather than signal detection.

Relay cells of the lateral geniculate nucleus, like those of other thalamic nuclei, manifest two distinct response modes, and these represent two very different forms of relay of information to cortex. When relatively hyperpolarized, these relay cells respond with a low threshold Ca2+ spike that triggers a brief burst of conventional action potentials. These cells switch to tonic mode when depolarized, since the low threshold Ca2+ spike, being voltage dependent, is inactivated at depolarized levels. In this mode they relay information with much more fidelity. This switch can occur under the influence of afferents from the visual cortex or parabrachial region of the brain stem. It has been previously suggested that the tonic mode is characteristic of the waking state while the burst mode signals an interruption of the geniculate relay during sleep. This review surveys the key properties of these two response modes and discusses the implications of new evidence that the burst mode may also occur in the waking animal.

Taste acuity declines with age and may be dependent upon Zn status. The aim of the present double-blind, randomised controlled intervention trial has been to determine taste acuity in response to Zn supplementation (placebo, or 15 or 30 mg Zn/d). Healthy older European adults aged 70–87 years were recruited within Italy (Rome) (n 108) and France (Grenoble) (n 91) to the European Commission-funded Zenith project. A signal detection theory approach was adopted for taste assessment. The data were converted to R indices and analysed by repeated-measures ANOVA controlling for baseline taste acuity as well as serum and erythrocyte Zn. Serum Zn increased post-intervention, indicating compliance with the intervention. Results differed across geographical region. Salt taste acuity was greater in response to Zn (30 mg) than placebo post-intervention among those recruited in Grenoble. There was no apparent change in acuity for sweet, sour or bitter taste in response to Zn. Supplemented Zn may have potential to enhance salt taste acuity in those over the age of 70 years. Further research is required to determine if enhanced salt taste acuity is reflected in the eating experiences of older individuals.
