Cambridge University was founded soon afterwards and celebrated its octocentenary in 2009.   • The Venns (father and son) published this ten-part work, containing over 125,000 entries, between 1922 and 1954. It is a comprehensive directory of all known alumni of the University of Cambridge, listed in two alphabetical sequences, from the university's foundation in the thirteenth century to 1751 and from 1752 to 1900. John Venn senior (1834–1923) is best known for his work as a philosopher and logician, but contributed to his university in many other ways. His keen interests in genealogy and antiquarian studies inspired this study, researched from sources including episcopal registers. His son, John Archibald Venn (1883–1958) brought the work to completion after his father's death. Thorough and reliable, it is recognised for its extraordinary value to historians and genealogists. Volume 1, Part 4 (1927) covers 'Saal to Zuinglius', and includes figures such as the statesman, poet and playwright Thomas Sackville, 1st Earl of Dorset.

  • To mark the fiftieth anniversary of the foundation of Newnham College, the second Cambridge college to offer university education to women, its Council asked Alice Gardner to write this short history, published in 1921. Gardner (1854–1927) had gone up to Newnham in 1876: she had achieved the highest history degree in her year (though she was not allowed to graduate), and went on to a distinguished teaching career in Cambridge and Bristol. The book describes 'the idea of Newnham', which arose from supporters of female education in the mid-nineteenth century, the parallel trajectory of the founders of Girton College, and the small beginning of what became Newnham, with five students in a house overlooking Parker's Piece in 1871. Gardner takes the story up to 1914 (with a short epilogue), ending with the hypothesis, 'If Newnham ever becomes a College of the University …', a status eventually achieved in 1948.

  • This anonymous and light-hearted work was first published in 1803: reissued here is the edition of 1824, of which the authors describe themselves as 'a Brace of Cantabs'. It claims both to be a guide to 'the academical customs' of the University of Cambridge and to its 'colloquial or cant terms' with notes on those that differ from the usage of Oxford. The balance of information is given to the less serious aspects of university life: for example, considerably more space is given, in the definition of 'bishop', to a recipe for mulled port wine than to the clerical role. The work abounds in puns (in English and Latin), anecdotes, and extracts (mostly amusing) from more serious histories of the university, and ends with a tailpiece on how to graduate 'the reading way' and 'the varmint way'. This fascinating work demonstrates that the publication of spoof 'guides to freshmen' is nothing new.

  • In this 1922 book, the first of four on the history of Cambridge in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, D.A. Winstanley, a Fellow of Trinity College and leading historiographer, explored the close ties between the academic and political worlds in the mid-eighteenth century. The book focuses on the role and achievements of the Duke of Newcastle, a Whig politician, as Chancellor of the University during the period 1748 to 1768. It makes extensive use of primary sources including the Duke's own records, which provide valuable documentation not only about his own activities but also about wider issues. Winstanley gives a detailed account of the inner working structures of the university and the colleges, introduces some of the most significant Cambridge personalities, and assesses the Duke's contribution to the university's development. His book remains of lasting interest to historians of education and the university.

  • This work, first published in 1853, grew from a paper describing the crossing of two Roman roads at Cambridge, and the small Roman fort at Grantchester. However, other Roman sites were added to the investigation, and the book came to encompass all the Roman and other ancient roads of Cambridgeshire, as well as the locations where Roman coins and other remains had been found. The author, Charles Cardale Babington (1808–95), is best remembered as the pupil and assistant of John Stevens Henslow and as his successor in the chair of botany at Cambridge. However, Babington was also keenly interested in archaeology, and this fascinating work of local history is the first substantial account of Roman Cambridgeshire, describing not only the courses of the various roads but also finds such as the Roman villa at Comberton, the Roman cemetery at Trumpington, and large numbers of individual coins and other artefacts.

  • When Charles Henry Cooper (1808–66) undertook to revise the text of the 1841 Memorials of Cambridge, illustrated by the engraver John Le Keux (1783–1846), he was under the impression that 'only a slight amount of labour' would be imposed on him. However, this three-volume work was altered and modified so extensively that it may be considered as entirely re-written. Containing over 250 photographs, engravings and etchings, Volumes 1 and 2 of the work are a comprehensive guide to the Cambridge colleges, while Volume 3 is almost entirely concerned with the history of other landmarks throughout the city, such as the Fitzwilliam Museum, the Guildhall and the Botanic Garden. It was published in 1860, just six years before Cooper's death, and stands as a detailed and fully illustrated guide to Cambridge at that time. Volume 3 covers Sidney Sussex and Downing, the university offices, churches and other important buildings.

  • Henry Gunning (1768–1854) was a Bedell at the University of Cambridge for over sixty years, and in this capacity attended on the Vice-Chancellor at official ceremonies and published the results of votes held in the Senate House. This two-volume work, written shortly before his death, and published posthumously in 1854, was controversial. News of its publication caused consternation about what he might say, and senior members of the University are noticeably absent from the subscription list. Gunning had been active in town politics as well as university affairs, and, though he includes amusing and perhaps embarrassing anecdotes about Cambridge figures, he is not malicious. He makes it clear that Cambridge was at a low point academically when he arrived as a student, but he lived to see the beginnings of reform in the Victorian period. Volume 1 deals with his life from 1784 to 1794, when he became a Bedell.

  • It is a peculiarity of Cambridge that in one of the principal streets, Trumpington Street, there is a runnel of fresh water, called Hobson's Conduit, on either side of the road (a similar stream in St Andrew's Street was covered over in the 1990s.) These streams form part of a system of water supply named after Thomas Hobson (1545–1631), the Cambridge carrier, from whom we get the expression 'Hobson's Choice', and for who the young John Milton wrote two verse epitaphs, reproduced in this work. For 250 years, Hobson's Conduit provided the principal supply of drinking water for the centre of the city, after Andrew Perne (1519–89), Vice-Chancellor of the University, persuaded a number of patrons, including Hobson, to subscribe towards the project. First published in 1938, this history of Cambridge's ancient urban watercourse was written by W. D. Bushell, one of the trustees of the Hobson's Conduit Trust.

  • The Anglo-Saxon cemetery at Girton College, Cambridge, was discovered in 1881, while ground was prepared for the construction of tennis courts. More of the cemetery was unearthed in 1886, when the foundations for the Tower Wing were being laid. The area was excavated under the supervision of Francis Jenkinson (1853–1923), and the urns and other material found on the site date it to roughly the fifth and sixth centuries CE. The graves contained domestic utensils - tweezers, needles, pots for food and cooking - and personal items, such as ivory combs and bronze brooches. Written by Girton alumnae Edith Hollingworth and Maureen O'Reilly, this detailed report of the excavations is based on notes left by Jenkinson, and was first published by Cambridge University Press in 1925. According to a contemporary reviewer, the work of Hollingworth and O'Reilly provides a 'duty to their College and a real service to archaeology'.

'J.' A Memoir of John Willis Clark, Registrary of the University of Cambridge and Sometime Fellow of Trinity College

  • John Willis Clark (1833–1910) devoted his life to the University of Cambridge, and this 1913 memoir by A. E. Shipley, Master of Christ's College, was a fitting tribute to a much admired man. His father was professor of anatomy, and his maternal uncle, Robert Willis, Jacksonian professor of natural philosophy. A scholar and fellow of Trinity College, his talent and energy as an administrator led to his appointment as superintendent of the museum of comparative anatomy, and he considerably improved the museum's collection. From natural history his interests were diverted in 1875 - his uncle died, leaving his monumental Architectural History of the University unfinished, and it was Clark who completed it in 1886. In 1891 he became Registrary of the University, which he remained until 1910, and was one of the best-known figures in Cambridge, involved with everything from administrative reform to student activities such as the triennial Greek play.

  • The formal ceremonies at Cambridge University can seem esoteric and baffling to newcomers and visitors. This 1926 publication answers questions including: what happens during the installation of the Chancellor of the University? What were the historical duties of the proctors? When and why did the square cap worn by the undergraduate originate? Who are the Esquire Bedells, and what is the traditional order at Degree Congregations? H. P. Stokes attends in turn to the main topics surrounding Cambridge traditions, including points of etiquette, historical origins, important personnel and academic dress. Clearly organised for ease of reference, the book is also illustrated throughout with historical photographs.

  • John Willis Clark, the Cambridge academic and antiquarian, began collecting literature connected with Cambridge in the 1860s. In 1910 he bequeathed to Cambridge University Library his collection of over ten thousand books, pamphlets and pieces of print relating, directly or indirectly, to Cambridge University, including some whose primary reference is to the town or county of Cambridge. Published in 1912, this catalogue documents Clark's extensive collection, listing the literature he amassed from all periods and upon every subject. Clark had a particular interest in college architecture and tracing the growth of the collegiate system, which explains the inclusion of works relating to Oxford and Eton in the collection. Arranged as a dictionary catalogue, with authors and subjects listed alphabetically, the work reflects Clark's aim to illustrate the history and development of Cambridge through its literature, from an historical and biographical point of view.

A Guide to the Windows of King's College Chapel, Cambridge

  • M. R. James (1862–1936) is probably best remembered as a writer of chilling ghost stories, but he was an outstanding scholar of medieval literature and palaeography, who served both as Provost of King's College, Cambridge, and as Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum, and many of his stories reflect his academic background. His detailed descriptive catalogues of manuscripts owned by colleges, cathedrals and museums are still of value to scholars today. First published in 1899, this book provides a description and brief history of the stained-glass windows in King's College chapel, together with explanations of their symbolism. A description of the remains of painted glass in the side chapels is also included. Now reissued, it will be welcomed by librarians and researchers alike.

  • William Whewell (1794–1866) was born the son of a Lancaster carpenter, but his precocious intellect soon delivered him into a different social sphere. Educated at a local grammar school, he won a scholarship to Cambridge, and began his career at Trinity College in 1812; he went on to be elected a fellow of Trinity in 1817 and Master in 1841. An acquaintance of William Wordsworth and a friend of Adam Sedgwick, his professional interests reflected a typically nineteenth-century fusion of religion and science, ethics and empiricism. Published in 1876, and written by the mathematician and fellow of St John's College, Isaac Todhunter (1820–84), this biography combines a narrative account of Whewell's life and achievements with extracts taken from his personal correspondence. Volume 1 covers his sermons and early poetry, as well as his work on tides, moral philosophy and mechanics, and his celebrated study of the inductive sciences.
