The interface between authors and their readers is a fascinating subject in its own right, revealing a great deal about social attitudes, technological progress, aesthetic values, fashionable interests, political positions, economic constraints and individual personalities. This part of the Cambridge Library Collection reissues classic studies in the area of printing and publishing history that shed light on developments in typography and book design, printing and binding, the rise and fall of publishing houses and periodicals and the roles of authors and illustrators. It documents the ebb and flow of the book trade supplying a wide range of customers with products from almanacs to novels, bibles to erotica, and poetry to statistics.

John Baskerville, Type-Founder and Printer, 1706–1775

  • The Baskerville Bible of 1763 is perhaps the most famous work published by Cambridge University Press, and Baskerville's own type punches are among its most treasured possessions. This short biography of John Baskerville (1706–75) was published in 1914 by Josiah Henry Benton (1843–1917), an American lawyer and author. Baskerville, born in Worcestershire, set up as a writing-master and letter-cutter in Birmingham, but later built up a business in 'japanning', the imitation of Japanese lacquer work, from which he made his fortune. He began working as a type-founder and printer around 1750, and made innovations not only in typefaces but also in paper, ink and printing machines. The quality of his books - not only the Bible, but also the Book of Common Prayer, an edition of Virgil, and Milton's Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained, among others - made them collectors' items: Benton provides an appendix listing his own Baskerville books.

Having added to it, Bradshaw generously presented the collection to the University Library in 1870, and it has been expanding ever since. Published in 1916, this three-volume catalogue was compiled by the bibliographer Charles Edward Sayle (1864–1924). The works listed here, numbering more than 8,000 items and dating from the early seventeenth century through to the late nineteenth century, represent a valuable resource for students of Irish history and printing. Sayle's catalogue reveals the breadth and richness of the collection at the time of publication. Volume 3 contains the index to the catalogue as a whole.

  • Donald Francis McKenzie (1931–1999) was one of the foremost bibliographers of the twentieth century, and his contributions to the history of the book continue to exert great influence on the field. Early in his career, he made a detailed study of the archives of Cambridge University Press, focusing on the period 1696–1712. In the course of his research, McKenzie discovered quite different working practices and patterns from what had previously been assumed, and this two-volume book, published in 1966, revolutionized the study of printing history. The discoveries described here were the foundation of much of McKenzie's subsequent work as he applied his findings from this specific case study to the world of early modern printing in general. Volume 1 outlines the Press' organization, operations and finance during this period. Volume 2 contains transcriptions of the minutes of the Press's governing Curators, the Press' accounts, bills and receipts.

  • The publication between 1887 and 1897 of these letters, which form part of the archive of the Dutch Church at Austin Friars in London, was a remarkable feat of bibliography. The archive had been deposited in 1866 with the Library Committee of the Corporation of the City of London, and in 1884 Jan Hendrick Hessels began to prepare them for the press. The letters, written in Dutch, French, English, Italian and Latin between 1524 and 1723, throw light on the religious, intellectual and political ferment of the period. The second volume (reissued here in two parts) consists of letters to and from the members of the Dutch Church in the period 1544–1622. The writers of letters in this volume include leading figures of the Protestant reformation such as Martin Bucer, Peter Martyr, Heinrich Bullinger and John Foxe.

  • The bibliophile aristocrat George Spencer (1758–1834) employed Thomas Frognall Dibdin (1776–1847) as his librarian for life. The second earl had amassed the greatest private library in Europe, housed at Althorp, and Dibdin was tasked with cataloguing the vast collection and sourcing suitable editions to add to it. In 1814, Dibdin began publishing his four-volume catalogue, Bibliotheca Spenceriana (also reissued in this series). Aedes Althorpianae was published in two volumes in 1822, and although it is to a great extent devoted to further details of the great library and its contents, it is also illuminating for its detailed history of Althorp and the Spencers. Its descriptions of the internal decoration of Althorp, particularly its art, are accompanied by numerous illustrations. Volume 2 records over 300 additions to the fifteenth-century books in the earl's collection, and catalogues the treasures of the great Cassano library, recently acquired by the earl.

  • At his death, George Spencer (1758–1834) had created the greatest private library in Europe. At the time, many aristocrats were spending huge sums acquiring rare printed books. With monastic and aristocratic libraries in Europe being dissolved, collectors had access to thousands of examples. The Second Earl Spencer's interests were in English 'black-letter' printing, especially the works of Caxton, and continental incunables, particularly first editions of Greek and Latin classics. Thomas Dibdin (1776–1847) was employed as Spencer's librarian and visited Europe searching for new acquisitions. Published in 1814–15, this catalogue is of the earliest and rarest items in the collection. Each is described in detail, with reproductions of woodcuts and engravings, making this a fascinating record of one man's commitment to collecting the earliest examples of this revolutionary invention. Volume 4 includes many examples of the earliest work of Caxton, alongside first editions of Boccacio and Dante.

  • Charles Hindley (d.1893) wrote several books on British popular literature including Curiosities of Street Literature and a history of the cries of London. This book, first published in a limited edition in 1869 but here reprinted from the 1886 edition, tells the colourful story of John (1769–1813) and James (1792–1842) Catnach, the father-and-son printers who were leaders in the expanding market for cheap publications for the masses. John's contribution was to start using real paper and printer's ink instead of the cheap substitutes current at the time. He was also noted for embellishing his work with great technical skill. James later developed a successful business printing cheap song-sheets, ballads and sensationalist accounts of crimes, conspiracies and scandals, and was able to support his widowed mother and his sisters on the proceeds. This lively biography is illustrated with numerous woodcuts, many from Catnach's publications.

As the title page explains, the work of Joseph Ames (1687–1759) was considerably augmented by William Herbert (1718–95), and then 'greatly enlarged, with copious notes, and illustrated with appropriate engravings' by Thomas Frognall Dibdin (1776–1847), several of whose other works are also reissued in this series. Ames' history of printing, based on his own collection, was published in 1749, as an aid to booksellers in identifying old works (and modern forgeries). Herbert, a printseller and bibliophile, acquired Ames' own interleaved copy of the work and intended to enlarge it, but died having completed only three of six proposed volumes. His working copies then passed to Dibdin, who eventually published this four-volume edition between 1810 and 1819. Volume 4 considers the lives and work of printers from Reynold Wolfe to Thomas Hacket.

  • T. C. Hansard (1776–1833) succeeded his father Luke as parliamentary printer. His fascination with the art of printing led to the publication of Typographia in 1825. This monumental study of the history and practice of printing is an important source for historians of printing, and is very clearly written. It is aimed both at young printers and at amateurs, and explains all the different aspects of running a printing business. Hansard acknowledges his debt to earlier writers such as Moxon and Stower, and to the unpublished papers of Earl Stanhope (1753–1816) who did much to modernise printing techniques. The book is particularly valuable for its discussion of recent developments in print technology and lithography, and for details about the business and financial side of printing. Part 1 contains the historical background and details of type-founding and fonts. Part 2 contains details of printing machinery, organisation, and lithography.
