Anaesthesia for gynaecological surgery includes ectopic pregnancy, management of miscarriage, diagnostic and therapeutic laparoscopies and major laparotomy. Whilst some of these operations are performed on usually healthy young women, laparotomies particular for malignancy may be for patients with multiple comorbidities. The anaesthetic technique is tailored to the proposed surgery, but blood loss from any gynaecological procedure can be brisk. In particular, major open surgery will require reliable vascular success (often with central venous and arterial cannulae) cross-matched blood, appropriate analgesia and provision for intensive care. The considerations of minimally invasive surgery are considered in chapter 25.
