Summary

Introduction

The purpose of this chapter is to assess the healthcare policy's impact on the citizens and residents of Mali. It will also explore whether the formulation and implementation of health policy were delivered as intended both at the facility level or training sector level or the individual or provider delivery level. It argues that the perception of healthcare providers in Mali has not effectively strengthened and sustained the positive intervention of health policies in the country. The quality of the resources used to deliver healthcare services including qualified staff, training, implantation, monitoring costs, and infrastructure will be used to determine the effectiveness of health policy in Mali. The main goal of the chapter is to describe the effects of the current health policy and services as well as identify challenges associated with community-based health schemes in Mali. The research methods adopted for collecting data involve qualitative and quantitative analysis. The research findings show that rural regions of the country do not have equal access to community-based health schemes as their urban counterparts in Mali. The research findings also reveal the challenges of poor healthcare quality of service delivery, weak policy strategies, unequal gender bias lifestyle, and poverty. The chapter provided some health policy recommendations that could enhance healthcare delivery in Mali in the future.

Brief History of Mali

The Republic of Mali is a country in West Africa. It has a boundary with the Republic of Algeria to the northwest, the Republic of Niger to the northwest, and the Republic of Mauritania to the east. The Republic of Mali has a boundary with many countries in the south. The countries include the Republic of Senegal, The Republic of Gambia, The Republic of Guinea Bissau, The Republic of Guinea, and the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire. It also has a boundary with the Republic of Burkina Faso to the southeast. Although the Republic of Mali is regarded as a landlocked country due to no direct boundary with the Atlantic Ocean, the River Niger flows through its interior, functioning as the main trading and transport artery in the country. The river Niger also provides the much-needed fertile agricultural land along its banks in Mali to enhance agriculture and rearing of livestock (Hill 2023; South African History Online 2023).
