Entropy of measure-preserving or continuous actions of amenable discrete groups allows for various equivalent approaches. Among them are those given by the techniques developed by Ollagnier and Pinchon on the one hand and the Ornstein–Weiss lemma on the other. We extend these two approaches to the context of actions of amenable topological groups. In contrast to the discrete setting, our results reveal a remarkable difference between the two concepts of entropy in the realm of non-discrete groups: while the first quantity collapses to 0 in the non-discrete case, the second yields a well-behaved invariant for amenable unimodular groups. Concerning the latter, we moreover study the corresponding notion of topological pressure, prove a Goodwyn-type theorem, and establish the equivalence with the uniform lattice approach (for locally compact groups admitting a uniform lattice). Our study elaborates on a version of the Ornstein–Weiss lemma due to Gromov.

The main theorem of this paper establishes a uniform syndeticity result concerning the multiple recurrence of measure-preserving actions on probability spaces. For $\unicode{x3bb}>1$, we consider the locally free ${\mathbb Z}\ltimes _\unicode{x3bb} \mathbb R$ actions on $\mathbb T^2$. We show that if the action is $C^r$ with $r\geq 2$, then it is $C^{r-\epsilon }$-conjugate to an affine action generated by a hyperbolic automorphism and a linear translation flow along the expanding eigen-direction of the automorphism. In contrast, there exists a $C^{1+\alpha }$-action which is semi-conjugate, but not topologically conjugate to an affine action.

We develop combinatorial tools to study partial rigidity within the class of minimal $\mathcal {S}$-adic subshifts. By leveraging the combinatorial data of well-chosen Kakutani–Rokhlin partitions, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for partial rigidity. Additionally, we provide an explicit expression to compute the partial rigidity rate and an associated partial rigidity sequence. As applications, we compute the partial rigidity rate for a variety of constant length substitution subshifts, such as the Thue–Morse subshift, where we determine a partial rigidity rate of 2/3. We also exhibit non-rigid substitution subshifts with partial rigidity rates arbitrarily close to 1 and, as a consequence, using products of the aforementioned substitutions, we obtain that any number in $[0, 1]$ is the partial rigidity rate of a system.

The aim of this paper is to determine the asymptotic growth rate of the complexity function of cut-and-project sets in the non-abelian case. In the case of model sets of polytopal type in homogeneous two-step nilpotent Lie groups, we can establish that the complexity function asymptotically behaves like $r^{{\mathrm {homdim}}(G) \dim (H)}$. Further, we generalize the concept of acceptance domains to locally compact second countable groups.

In this article, we extend, with a great deal of generality, many results regarding the Hausdorff dimension of certain dynamical Diophantine coverings and shrinking target sets associated with a conformal iterated function system (IFS) previously established under the so-called open set condition. The novelty of the result we present is that it holds regardless of any separation assumption on the underlying IFS and thus extends to a large class of IFSs the previous results obtained by Beresnevitch and Velani [A mass transference principle and the Duffin–Schaeffer conjecture for Hausdorff measures. Ann. of Math. (2) 164(3) (2006), 971–992] and by Barral and Seuret [The multifractal nature of heterogeneous sums of Dirac masses. Math. Proc. Cambridge Philos. Soc. 144(3) (2008), 707–727]. Moreover, it will be established that if S is conformal and satisfies mild separation assumptions (which are, for instance, satisfied for any self-similar IFS on $\mathbb {R}$ with algebraic parameters, no exact overlaps and similarity dimension smaller than $1$), then the classical result of Hill–Velani regarding the shrinking target problem associated with a conformal IFS satisfying the open set condition (and for which the Hausdorff measure was later computed by Allen and Barany [On the Hausdorff measure of shrinking target sets on self-conformal sets. Mathematika 67 (2021), 807–839]) can be extended.

We perform a multifractal analysis of homological growth rates of oriented geodesics on hyperbolic surfaces. Our main result provides a formula for the Hausdorff dimension of level sets of prescribed growth rates in terms of a generalized Poincaré exponent of the Fuchsian group. We employ symbolic dynamics developed by Bowen and Series, ergodic theory and thermodynamic formalism to prove the analyticity of the dimension spectrum.

This paper considers two commuting smooth transformations on a Banach space and proves the sub-additivity of the measure theoretic entropies under mild conditions. Furthermore, some additional conditions are given for the equality of the entropies. This extends Hu’s work [Some ergodic properties of commuting diffeomorphisms. Ergod. Th. & Dynam. Sys. 13(1) (1993), 73–100] about commuting diffeomorphisms in a finite dimensional space to the case of systems on an infinite dimensional Banach space.

Quasigeodesic behavior of flow lines is a very useful property in the study of Anosov flows. Not every Anosov flow in dimension three is quasigeodesic. In fact, until recently, up to orbit equivalence, the only previously known examples of quasigeodesic Anosov flows were suspension flows. In a recent article, the second author proved that an Anosov flow on a hyperbolic 3-manifold is quasigeodesic if and only if it is non-$\mathbb {R}$-covered, and this result completes the classification of quasigeodesic Anosov flows on hyperbolic 3-manifolds. In this article, we prove that a new class of examples of Anosov flows are quasigeodesic. These are the first examples of quasigeodesic Anosov flows on 3-manifolds that are neither Seifert, nor solvable, nor hyperbolic. In general, it is very hard to show that a given flow is quasigeodesic and, in this article, we provide a new method to prove that an Anosov flow is quasigeodesic.

We study linear random walks on the torus and show a quantitative equidistribution statement, under the assumption that the Zariski closure of the acting group is semisimple.

We combine methods from microlocal analysis and dimension theory to study resonances with largest real part for an Anosov flow with smooth real valued potential. We show that the resonant states are closely related to special systems of measures supported on the stable manifolds introduced by Climenhaga [SRB and equilibrium measures via dimension theory. A Vision for Dynamics in the 21st Century: The Legacy of Anatole Katok. Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2024, pp. 94–138]. As a result, we relate the presence of the resonances on the critical axis to mixing properties of the flow with respect to certain equilibrium measures and show that these equilibrium measures can be reconstructed from the spectral theory of the Anosov flow.

We establish some interactions between uniformly recurrent subgroups (URSs) of a group G and cosets topologies $\tau _{\mathcal {N}}$ on G associated to a family $\mathcal {N}$ of normal subgroups of G. We show that when $\mathcal {N}$ consists of finite index subgroups of G, there is a natural closure operation $\mathcal {H} \mapsto \mathrm {cl}_{\mathcal {N}}(\mathcal {H})$ that associates to a URS $\mathcal {H}$ another URS $\mathrm {cl}_{\mathcal {N}}(\mathcal {H})$, called the $\tau _{\mathcal {N}}$-closure of $\mathcal {H}$. We give a characterization of the URSs $\mathcal {H}$ that are $\tau _{\mathcal {N}}$-closed in terms of stabilizer URSs. This has consequences on arbitrary URSs when G belongs to the class of groups for which every faithful minimal profinite action is topologically free. We also consider the largest amenable URS $\mathcal {A}_G$ and prove that for certain coset topologies on G, almost all subgroups $H \in \mathcal {A}_G$ have the same closure. For groups in which amenability is detected by a set of laws (a property that is variant of the Tits alternative), we deduce a criterion for $\mathcal {A}_G$ to be a singleton based on residual properties of G.

Let G be a torsion-free, finitely generated, nilpotent and metabelian group. In this work, we show that G embeds into the group of orientation-preserving $C^{1+\alpha }$-diffeomorphisms of the compact interval for all $\alpha < 1/k$, where k is the torsion-free rank of $G/A$ and A is a maximal abelian subgroup. We show that, in many situations, the corresponding $1/k$ is critical in the sense that there is no embedding of G with higher regularity. A particularly nice family where this happens is the family of $(2n+1)$-dimensional Heisenberg groups, for which we can show that the critical regularity is equal to $1+1/n$.

We build a Shannon orbit equivalence between the universal odometer and a variety of rank-one systems. This is done in a unified manner using what we call flexible classes of rank-one transformations. Our main result is that every flexible class contains an element which is Shannon orbit equivalent to the universal odometer. Since a typical example of flexible class is $\{T\}$ when T is an odometer, our work generalizes a recent result by Kerr and Li, stating that every odometer is Shannon orbit equivalent to the universal odometer. When the flexible class is a singleton, the rank-one transformation given by the main result is explicit. This applies to odometers and Chacon’s map. We also prove that strongly mixing systems, systems with a given eigenvalue, or irrational rotations whose angle belongs to any fixed non-empty open subset of the real line form flexible classes. In particular, strong mixing, rationality or irrationality of the eigenvalues are not preserved under Shannon orbit equivalence.

This paper studies quasiconformal non-equivalence of Julia sets and limit sets. We proved that any Julia set is quasiconformally different from the Apollonian gasket. We also proved that any Julia set of a quadratic rational map is quasiconformally different from the gasket limit set of a geometrically finite Kleinian group.

For a class of potentials $\psi $ satisfying a condition depending on the roof function of a suspension (semi)flow, we show an EKP inequality, which can be interpreted as a Hölder continuity property in the weak${^*}$ norm of measures, with respect to the pressure of those measures, where the Hölder exponent depends on the $L^q$-space to which $\psi $ belongs. This also captures a new type of phase transition for intermittent (semi)flows (and maps).

We prove structural results for measure-preserving systems, called Furstenberg systems, naturally associated with bounded multiplicative functions. We show that for all pretentious multiplicative functions, these systems always have rational discrete spectrum and, as a consequence, zero entropy. We obtain several other refined structural and spectral results, one consequence of which is that the Archimedean characters are the only pretentious multiplicative functions that have Furstenberg systems with trivial rational spectrum, another is that a pretentious multiplicative function has ergodic Furstenberg systems if and only if it pretends to be a Dirichlet character, and a last one is that for any fixed pretentious multiplicative function, all its Furstenberg systems are isomorphic. We also study structural properties of Furstenberg systems of a class of multiplicative functions, introduced by Matomäki, Radziwiłł, and Tao, which lie in the intermediate zone between pretentiousness and strong aperiodicity. In a work of the last two authors and Gomilko, several examples of this class with exotic ergodic behavior were identified, and here we complement this study and discover some new unexpected phenomena. Lastly, we prove that Furstenberg systems of general bounded multiplicative functions have divisible spectrum. When these systems are obtained using logarithmic averages, we show that a trivial rational spectrum implies a strong dilation invariance property, called strong stationarity, but, quite surprisingly, this property fails when the systems are obtained using Cesàro averages.

Consider, for any integer $n\ge 3$, the set $\operatorname {\mathrm {Pos}}_n$ of all n-periodic tree patterns with positive topological entropy and the set $\operatorname {\mathrm {Irr}}_n\subset \operatorname {\mathrm {Pos}}_n$ of all n-periodic irreducible tree patterns. The aim of this paper is to determine the elements of minimum entropy in the families $\operatorname {\mathrm {Pos}}_n$, $\operatorname {\mathrm {Irr}}_n$ and $\operatorname {\mathrm {Pos}}_n\setminus \operatorname {\mathrm {Irr}}_n$. Let $\unicode{x3bb} _n$ be the unique real root of the polynomial $x^n-2x-1$ in $(1,+\infty )$. We explicitly construct an irreducible n-periodic tree pattern $\mathcal {Q}_n$ whose entropy is $\log (\unicode{x3bb} _n)$. We prove that this entropy is minimum in $\operatorname {\mathrm {Pos}}_n$. Since the pattern $\mathcal {Q}_n$ is irreducible, $\mathcal {Q}_n$ also minimizes the entropy in the family $\operatorname {\mathrm {Irr}}_n$. We also prove that the minimum positive entropy in the set $\operatorname {\mathrm {Pos}}_n\setminus \operatorname {\mathrm {Irr}}_n$ (which is non-empty only for composite integers $n\ge 6$) is $\log (\unicode{x3bb} _{n/p})/p$, where p is the least prime factor of n.

We study piecewise injective, but not necessarily globally injective, contracting maps on a compact subset of ${\mathbb R}^d$. We prove that, generically, the attractor and the set of discontinuities of such a map are disjoint, and hence the attractor consists of periodic orbits. In addition, we prove that piecewise injective contractions are generically topologically stable.

We prove the convergence of moments of the number of directions of affine lattice vectors that fall into a small disc, under natural Diophantine conditions on the shift. Furthermore, we show that the pair correlation function is Poissonian for any irrational shift in dimension 3 and higher, including well-approximable vectors. Convergence in distribution was already proved in the work of Strömbergsson and the second author [The distribution of free path lengths in the periodic Lorentz gas and related lattice point problems. Ann. of Math. (2) 172 (2010), 1949–2033], and the principal step in the extension to convergence of moments is an escape of mass estimate for averages over embedded $\operatorname {SL}(d,\mathbb {R})$-horospheres in the space of affine lattices.
