Readers will notice that this issue includes many more articles than usual—we typically publish six or seven articles per issue whereas 54-4 has twelve contributions. Language in Society will have a new publishing format beginning with the last issue of 2025 (a special issue on the Anthropocene) and, thus, it was necessary to assign all of the First View articles currently in the old format to a single issue. As always, this issue showcases a breadth of issues, approaches and contexts in the study of language and society.

We are also very happy to remind readers that all research articles accepted for publication in Language in Society beginning August 11, 2025 will be ‘open access’. This open access option is available to every author as the costs of open access publication will either be covered by agreements between Cambridge University Press and the author’s institution, or else waived completely. See the journal’s website for more details.
