II - List of Named Properties in William Porlond’s Brewers’ Book, Part 1
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 15 May 2024
Summary
The names of brewhouses recorded in Porlond's book refer to the signs that they displayed. Such signs were commonly used on substantial commercial establishments, such as public inns (hotels) and taverns (which sold wine, and sometimes ale and beer as well). Some brewhouses (commercial breweries) and large alehouses (neighbourhood drinking houses) may also have had signs. In the list below, locations beginning ‘St’ are London parishes. Names of streets and parishes are those used in the Directory in the Map of Tudor London. The numbers refer to paragraph numbers.
