This chapter approaches the history of the cinema of Oceania as a window on the shifting beliefs, values, and relational understandings of filmmakers and their communities about the region. Embroiled in the dynamics of encounters between outsiders and insiders crossing imagined or actual beaches of Pacific worlds, the region's film history has seen a dramatic turn from a cinema of Oceania to what might be called an Oceanian cinema as decolonizing and empowering works by Indigenous and local filmmakers emerged in the last decades of the twentieth century.
