from Section 6 - Heart Failure, Mechanical Circulatory Support, and Transplantation
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 09 September 2021
Mechanical circulatory support for children includes extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and ventricular assist devices. While extracorporeal membrane oxygenation provides both cardiac and respiratory support, ventricular assist devices support only cardiac function. The choice of device used depends on patient acuity, presence of comorbidities, potential for recovery, and the anticipated length of support required. This chapter outlines the types of mechanical circulatory support available for support of the right and left heart and details care of a patient receiving such support.
