Auffallend stimmt bei allen Deutschen und Slaven die benennung der milch zusammen: goth. miluks, ahd. miluh, mhd. milch, ags. meoloc meolc, engl. milk, fries. melok, altn. miôlk, schwed. mjölk, dän. melk, und den Lappen mag ihr melke milke aus Scandinavien zugegangen sein, da alle übrigen finnischen sprachen andre wörter zeigen. altsl. mljeko, russ. moloko, poln. böhm. slov. mleko, serb. mlijeko, wendisch mloko (den Lüneb. Wenden melauka.) durchgehends in beiden sprachen herscht anlautendes M; nach der lautverschiebung würde aber goth. K in miluks statt des sl. K in mljeko G begehren.
Dies G bestätigt sich sobald wir in die wurzel eindringen: milch ist das gemolkne, aus dem euter gedrückte, gezogne. nach dem ahd. milchu malch darf ein goth. milka malk vermutet werden und ihm entsprechen sl. ml”zu inf. ml”sti, litth. melźu milszti, lat. mulgeo und mulceo, beide mit dem praet. mulsi und der bedeutung palpo, leni manu tracto, endlich gr. ἀμέλγω. mulgere scheint aber gerechter als mulcere, wie gr. ἀμέλγω und sl. Z in ml” zu, das aus G, nicht aus K deutbar wird (s. 382), bestätigen.
