Chapter 1 introduces the general hypothesis that grammar is best analyzed as a dynamic network and (briefly) considers three basic principles of the usage-based approach that concern (1) the relationship between grammar and language use (or competence and performance); (2) the relationship between linguistic states and language development; and (3) the relationship between lexemes and syntactic structure.
