Summary

Since the publication of the first edition of Gynaecological Oncology for the MRCOG and Beyond, a multidisciplinary and patient-centred approach to care, delivered in linked local or specialist centres, has been established in the UK. The training of obstetricians and gynaecologists has also changed, with the introduction of advanced training and study modules (ATSM) in the senior years of training. ATSMs in gynaecological oncology and colposcopy can now be undertaken in many centres.

This book will be useful both to those preparing for MRCOG Part 2 and to those undertaking the ATSM in Gynaecological Oncology.

For patients, the pathway of care often begins in local cancer units – this may be confined to diagnosis or may include the triage of patients for further management at a local or specialist centre. This process involves a multidisciplinary approach and usually includes discussion at multidisciplinary team meetings. The contributors to the second edition work as part of such teams throughout the UK.

Recognising these developments in care, the second edition of our book includes chapters which focus on this multidisciplinary approach. We hope that chapters such as those on pathology, radiology, chemotherapy and radiotherapy will increase the understanding of the disciplines that are central to our multidisciplinary teams.

Chapters on laparoscopic surgery, basic surgical principles, palliative care and emergencies and treatment-related complications in gynaecological oncology provide additional up-to-date information for specialists involved in the care of women with gynaecological cancers. The chapters on epidemiology, pathology and each of the main gynaecological cancers have all been updated for this edition and present the latest evidence on investigation, staging and management.
