Summary
Key Learning Points
1. The differential for a collapsed infant is broad and encompasses congenital heart disease, sepsis, surgical presentations, inborn errors of metabolism and trauma.
2. Treat first – diagnose at leisure; early support of the neonate’s physiology is lifesaving.
3. Start prostaglandin if there is any suspicion of a duct-dependent cardiac lesion – it can always be stopped.
4. Start broad-spectrum empirical anti-bacterial drugs.
5. Sudden unexpected death in infancy describes all unexpected deaths in infancy. If, after thorough investigation, a cause cannot be found, the death is classified as having been caused by sudden infant death syndrome.
