Summary
Critical assessment of Ascendancy novels has undergone significant if not wholly resolved transitions in the last three decades. The reception of this tradition had long been held hostage to recycled issues of nationalism and skewed by a critical focus on realism rather than on themes of Irish modernism that cannot be fully separated from a literature of crisis and cultural transformation.
