My Dear Cape:—

I was sorry to miss you in Paris— And that your letter should have gone to Paris and back so this may miss you in N.Y.—

About the book— It is for next fall but I hope to have a completed Mss with Scribners by the first of the year—Have finished all but some detail in an appendix—If we make a satisfactory agreement wouldnt you rather have corrected galleys than Mss. since they will be in your hands in plenty of time and since they will save us both trouble and expense on correcting Galleys after it has been set from Mss—

About making the illustrations— I will mark on the galleys where they are to go— If Max Perkins cant get the proper plates made in N.Y. perhaps you and he can get together on them— The frmat will be something about the size of the T. E. Lawrence Book—1

The Illustrations I have are 9¼ × 7 inches and I want them without borders—with the explanation or caption to be opposite on the opposite page like this

This was the way the paintings etc were reproduced in Men of Art by Thomas Craven— except his captions were on the back— Having the captions on flimsy paper is very ineffective— In the way I have indicated the captions come just opposite the text and they will be marked as inserts on the Galleys— Then when page proofs are made up they will be put in their proper place— Some will be a good deal longer than others—
