Summary
Khrushchev’s 1956 ‘secret speech’, delivered behind closed doors to the twentieth congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, laid bare the cruelty and excesses of Stalin’s personality cult. For citizens across the Eastern Bloc, the speech was a cultural watershed. Polish translations were passed among Party members, and leaked copies were sold for extortionate prices on the black market.
