Summary
What makes Weinberg appealing? We might wonder whether it is the potential afforded for reading his music as ‘aspirational’, or even that it seems to transcend its historical situation. That would be to argue that the composer yearned in his music for a freedom that was not achieved in his lifetime. Such an interpretation certainly makes for an inspirational narrative that can enhance listening to the composer, but it is complicated by the present situation for each of his three ‘identities’.
