Summary
The long-aristocratic, ancient line.
The steadfast brows that arch above the eyes.
A child's fear — and this blue — still tint their gaze.
Humble, not servile, sometimes they will shine
as women's will, or one who helps — or tries.
The mouth? A mouth. Exact; of no small size;
not over-suasive, but forthright and fine
in speaking out. The brow never malign,
but pleased to nod within some still surmise.
All this: not yet cohered, but only sensed —
not yet locked in through triumph or through grieving;
still not made fast in integral achieving;
and yet, from far-off, scattered things, believing
some deep, true thing were planned, but not commenced.
Der König
Der König ist sechzehn Jahre alt.
Sechzehn Jahre und schon der Staat.
Er schaut, wie aus einem Hinterhalt,
vorbei an den Greisen vom Rat
in den Saal hinein und irgendwohin
und fühlt vielleicht nur dies:
an dem schmalen langen harten Kinn
die kalte Kette vom Vlies.
Das Todesurteil vor ihm bleibt
lang ohne Namenszug.
Und sie denken: wie er sich quält.
Sie wüßten, kennten sie ihn genug,
daß er nur langsam bis siebzig zählt
eh er es unterschreibt.
