Summary
The introduction gives an overview of Holmes’s life and his importance to American law. It also describes the central ambiguity in his views between idealism, on one hand, and reductionism, on the other. In addition, it describes the method to use for interpreting Holmes and provides a justification for it. The prologue recounts the circumstances of Holmes's famous Memorial Day speech and uses it to suggest the nature of his character.
