Summary

The archbishop's summons to the Winchester parliament

Simon, Dei gratia Cantuariensis archiepiscopus, totius Angliae primas, venerabili fratri nostro Domino Stephano, Dei gratia Londoniensi episcopo, salutem. Ex assumpta solicitudine pastoralis officii multoties cogimur pro varietate temporum, et urgentibus ecclesiae et regni negotiis cum praelatis et clero nostrae provinciae communem habere tractatum, instans enim reipublicae magna necessitas etc., inevitabiliter nos impellunt praelatos et clerum nostrae provinciae praedictae iuxta effectum brevis regii convocare. Quod quidem breve quarto Iduum Februarii [2 February 1330] recepimus, tenorem continens infrascriptum:

Edwardus, Dei gratia rex Angliae, dominus Hiberniae et dux Aquitaniae Simoni, eadem gratia archiepiscopo Cantuariensi, totius Angliae primati salutem. Cum pro arduis et magnis negotiis nos et statum regni nostri multipliciter contingentibus, parliamentum nostrum apud Wintoniam die Dominica proxima ante festum Sancti Gregorii papae proximo fiiturum [ 11 March 1330] tenere, et vobiscum et cum ceteris praelatis, magnatibus et proceribus praedictis super dictis negotiis tractaturi, vestrumque consilium impensuri, et licet singulis episcopis iniunxerimus, quod quivis eorum praemuniri faciat priores, decanos et capitula suarum ecclesiarum cathedralium, necnon archidiaconos et clerum suarum diocesium per duos procuratores, sufficientem potestatem ab ipsis capitulo et clero habentes, sint in dicto die apud locum praedictum, ad consentiendum his quae tune ibidem communi consilio regni nostri contigerit ordinari, nolentes tamen negotia nostra praedicta prae defectu praemunitionum praedictarum, si forsan minus rite factae fuerint, aliqualiter retardari, vobis mandamus rogantes, quod praemuniri faciatis priores, decanos et capitula ecclesiarum cathedralium, necnon archidiaconos et clerum cuiuslibet diocesis, et quod iidem priores, decani, capitula ecclesiarum cathedralium, archidiaconi et clerus sint in dicto die apud dictum locum ad consentiendum his quae tune ibidem de communi consilio regni nostri ordinari contigerit, sicut praedictum est. et hoc nullatenus omittatis. Teste meipso apud Eltham, vicesimo sexto die Ianuarii anno regni quarto [26 January 1330].

Nos igitur tanto promptius et favorabilius votis regiis deliberato consilio fore conspicimus annuendum, quo firmissime speramus tractatum huiusmodi Ecclesiae Anglicanae et ecclesiasticis personis non modice profiiturum. Quocirca fratemitati vestrae committimus et mandamus quatenus cum debita celeritate confratribus et coepiscopis provinciae Cantuariensis suffraganeis, seu eorum in ipsorum absentia vicariis, vice et auctoritate nostra iniungatis seu iniungi faciatis,
