Summary

Convocation anno vicesimo primo Iacobiregis held by archbishop Abbot anno decimo tertio translationis at St Paul's, London, videlicet 13 February 1623 [1624]

[fo. 366] King's writ to sit in parliament, 12 February 1623 [1624]. King's writ to summon the convocation, 13 February 1623 [1624]. Mandate citatory by the archbishop to the bishop of London.

[fo. 367] A writ to prorogue to 17 February 1623 [1624].

[fo. 368] Archbishop's commission thereupon and prorogued accordingly,

[fos. 369-70] A writ to prorogue again to the 20th of February 1623 [1624]. Archbishop's commission to do it. Prorogued by Dr Bird, dean of arches.

Session 1. Friday 20 February 1624

[fo. 376] Archbishop goes (by coach) to London house to St Paul's. Bishop of London's certificate and the archdeacon of Canterbury's certificate. Contumacy.

Sessions 2-3. Dates unknown

[fos. 377-8] Nothing of note but the usual protestations at Westminster.

Session 4. Wednesday 10 March 1624

[fos. 378-9] A complaint brought in by the college of physicians against ministers exercising physic. Archbishop declares before both houses that ministers should be inhibited to practise but in their own parishes, and only for charity.

[fo. 379] The archbishop complains of the irregular habit of clerks, exhorting amendment.

[fos. 380-1] Nothing remarkable.

Session 13. Friday 30 April 1624

[fos. 382-91] Grant of four subsidies of 4s. First whole payment of 4s the 1st of June 1624. The other three subsidies by half-yearly payments of 2s a time and the last payment the 1st of June 1627.

Sessions 14-16. Dates unknown (but including 18 May)

Agreement of both houses to inspect theological books

Quibus die et loco Iohannes Young sacrae theologiae professor, decanus Winton,624 prolocutor antedictus, iterato proposuit dictum negotium de libris et saepius antehac in dicta convocatione agitatum. Et censebat quosdam eruditos et spectatae industriae viros in utraque academia eligendos ex consensu huius convocationis, tarn scilicet reverendissimi in Christo patris domini archiepiscopi Cantuariensis huius convocationis praesidentis dignissimi ceterorumque dominorum episcoporum, quam decanorum, archidiaconorum et procuratorum cleri nominandos;
