[197v] Venerabili in Christo patri domino Dei gratia Wintoniensi episcopo Gilbertus, permissione eiusdem episcopus Londoniensis salutem et fraternae dilectionis continuum incrementum. Literas venerabilis patris Domini Walteri, Dei gratia Cantuariensis archiepiscopi, totius Angliae primatis, recepimus in haec verba:

Walterus, permissione divina Cantuariensis archiepiscopus, totius Angliae primas, venerabili Domino Gilberto, Dei gratia Londoniensi episcopo salutem et fraternam in Domino caritatem. Latius per diversa mundi climata diffunditur, et cotidianis gestorum experimentis perpendimus, qualiter natale solum dispendiorum incommodis atteritur per hoc quod pacis aemulus et humani generis perfidus inimicus regnum Angliae eiusque incolas hostium insidiis undique circumcinxit, et innumerabilium aciem bellatorum in nos omnes convertit, atque alia pericula nobis et Ecclesiae Anglicanae clero pariter atque regno imminentia fallaciter praeparavit; in tantum quod nisi saeva saevientium audacia reprimatur, et eidem favente Domino competentibus remediis occurratur, nos et ecclesiam antedictam clerum etiam ac ceteros regnicolas ad desolationis irreparabile detrimentum (quod absit) perduci posse praesumimus et verisimiliter formidamus. Cum itaque dominus noster rex ad haec suae considerationis convertens oculum nos suis rogatibus excitaverit, ut praemissa pericula ponderantes clerum nostrae Cantuariensis diocesis et provinciae apud Lincolniam in quindena Sancti Hilarii [27 January 1316], ubi in suo parliamento quod inibi celebrare disposuit vos ac ceteri episcopi nostri ut et nos ac proceres et magnates regni Angliae ex praemunitione regia estis, dante Domino, tune venturi, pro competenti in hac parte providendo remedio cum aliorum consilio qui ibidem tune aderunt convocemus. Nos casibus huiusmodi, quos ut praemisimus instantes esse probabiliter convicimus et evidenter attendimus, obviare in quantum licite poterimus affectantes, regiae maiestatis precibus huiusmodi eo favorabilius inclinamur, quo nos et ecclesiam, clerum et ceteros regni incolas hostium nostrorum undique crescentium repentinis [198r] incursionibus et oppressionibus cernimus subiacere, quamquam viarum et temporum ac aliorum gravaminum multiplex importunitas videatur huic negotio plurimum adversari, vestrae tamen fraternitati committimus et mandamus quatenus cum debita celeritate confratribus et coepiscopis nostris nostrae Cantuariensis ecclesiae et provinciae suffraganeis vice et auctoritate nostra iniungatis seu faciatis iniungi, ut iidem episcopi omnes et singuli in suis diocesibus, decanos et priores ecclesiarum cathedralium ac archidiaconos in propriis personis suis, necnon et clerum cuiuscunque diocesis per duos procuratores similiter et abbates ac ceteros priores, exemptos et non exemptos, per se vel per procuratores, dum tamen circa idem tempus ad personalem comparitionem alias non arctentur.
