Eugenius episcopus, servus servorum Dei, venerabili fratri nostro archiepisc[opo] Cantuariensi salutem et apostolicam benedictionem. Anno proximo anteacto, ut exercitum quern terra marique parabamus in Turcos, Christi hostes, alere et sustentare possemus, ad carissimum in Christo filiurn nostrum regem Angliae illustem, et ad regni ipsius praelatos, specialiterque ad tuam fraternitatem, confidentissime misimus pro decima, quam colligi volebamus. Fuit vero dictus rex talker in negotio ardens ut non solum decimam fuerit permissurus, sed pugnatores insuper suis sumptibus mittere sit pollicitus. Et dum inter praelatos regni de dictae decimae exactione ageretur, omnes tuis exhortationibus adducti faciliter consentiebant, sed emergentium per id temporis occupationum multitudo ipsam decimam tune exigi prohibuit. Cum itaque idem sit animus noster in praedicta re, qui fuit anno anteacto, nunc quae magis quam unquam antea cupiamus intendamusque ad dictorum infidelium persecutionem exercitum terra, classemque mari parare, iamque principlibus et populis Christianis, qui dictis barbaris infidelibus sunt propinqui, necessarios tantae expeditioni ordines dare coeperimus, dilectum filium Magistrum Lodowicum de Cordona mittimus in Angliam, ad simul cum collectore dictam decimam colligendam, unde tuam fraternitatem in Domino duximus exhortandam, ut non solum quod te libenter facturum non dubitamus, consentias ipsius decimae exactioni, sed auctoritatem tuam quae apud praelatos clerumque regni merito est maxima, interponas, ac obnixe opereris et facias quod omnes ipsi praelati et totus clerus consentiant atque solvant, nam cum materia per seipsam omnibus sit gratissima, si viderint alii praelati et clerus te ad solvendum facilem, ad ipsorumque exhortationem solicitum, non dubitamus quin solutio ipsa brevi, sicut opus esset, perficiatur, unde maximum apud Deum meriti aeternae retributionis cumulum, et maximam apud nos gratiam comparabis. Ceterum praedicto Lodowico in dicendis parte nostra velis fidem credulitatis plenariam adhibere. Quibus literis a praedicto domino Cantuariensi cum omni veneratione, uti decuit, receptis, atque perlectis in praesentia venerabilis viri Domini Vincentii Clement, sanctissimi nostri subdiaconi, ac Magistri Roberti, registri, dictus dominus Cantuariensis post gratulationem habitam de prosperitate status et personae sanctissimi domini nostri et humanitatis verba nuntio suo praedicto repensa;
