Prorogation of the synod from 9 September 1518

Reverende in Christo noster tanquam frater amantissime, salutem et sinceram in Domino dilectionem, etsi cum novissime pro cleri reformatione una cum vestra paternitate, ceterisque reverendis confratribus huius regni praesulibus in aedibus nostris simul omnes convenissemus, dies in crastino nativitatis Beatae Mariae Virginis [9 September 1518], ad bonum istud opus absolvendum praescripta fuerit; quoniam tamen iniquam pestem per universam Londoniensem civitatem, loca quae illi adiacentia nunc maxima saevire intelligimus, adeo ut ad praefixum tempus non absque magno personae nostrae nostrorumque ac vestrorum familiarum discrimine con venire possimus; nee praeterea a religiosis super capitulis quae illis subeunda proposuimus quid agere decreverint certiores adhuc facti sumus; hanc ob causam, tarn etiam ut grassantem pestem pro viribus declinemus; convocationem istam ad primum diem Lunae post festum cinerum proximo fiiturum [14 March 1519] differre statuimus, ea tempora salubriora esse iudicantes et conficiendis hiis quae ad laudem Dei et Christianae religionis dignitatem perpetuamque omnium nostrum gloriam tractare incepimus aptiora. Vestram igitur paternitatem in Domino monemus et hortamur, ut ad praefatum diem Lunae sic omnino adesse velit, ac interim diligenter articulos pro cleri reformatione conceptos in sua diocesi exequi non gravetur, ut ad suum hue adventum quid boni illic egerit nobis cumulatius referre possit; quae bene valeat. Ex nostris aedibus, die vicesimo primo Augusti, MDXVIII [21 August 1518], vester tamquam frater T[homas] cardinalis Eboracensis.

Litera directa unicuique episcoporum Cantuariensis provinciae ad celebrandum quoddam concilium generale; tamen non emanavit:

Willelmus, permissione divina Cantuariensis archiepiscopus, totius Angliae primas et apostoliae sedis legatus venerabili confratri nostro Dei gratia N. episcopo salutem et fraternam in Christo caritatem. Quum dierum crescente malitia videmus mundum in deteriora et in mortem vitiorum assidue prolabi, iuxta illud Iohannis totus mundus in maligno positus est, suscepti regiminis provinciae Cantuariensis nos maxima cura suscitat, ut quantum nostra mediocritas sufficit, providere studeamus ne in diebus nostris tacite et dissimulanter sinamus animas nobis commissas (pro quibus in extremo234 Dei iudicio exacte respondebimus) currere in ruinam et perditionem sed omnem exponamus operam ut metuendis eventibus via praecludatur et nocivis subtractis saluberrima procurentur proque diversitate culparum remedia quasi medicamenta constituantur incitatis bonis ut amore virtutis allecti meliores fiant et coactis malis ut formidine poenarum a vitiis resipiscant atque cura fidelium nostrae provinciae statum
