D - Fees and Annuities Awarded by the First and Third Dukes of Buckingham

Summary

Where possible a brief indication of each recipient's social position has been given, together with the size and provenance of his or her fee and the reason why it was awarded. Members of the ducal council are marked * and are more fully documented in Appendix C. Many other annuitants were senior household and estate staff; their appointments are noted briefly here, and at greater length in the appropriate sections of Appendix B. Unless otherwise stated fees were awarded by letters patent under the Stafford seal.

PART I

(a) Annuities Paid by Duke Humphrey during the Years 1442 and 1447

The two annuity lists for the years ending Mich. 1442 and 1447 (D.641/1/ 2/17 mm. IV–2V and Longleat Ms. 6410 mm. 2V–3V) have here been combined. Names which appear in both accounts are marked (1442–7), while those occurring in one but not the other are designated either (1442) or (1447) accordingly.

(1) Knights

John Astley (1442–7): awarded 20 marks p.a. for life from Amersham, Bucks., in Nov. 1441 (N.L.W. Peniarth Ms. 280 fo. 20).

John Bourchier * (esquire 1442, knight 1447): Buckingham's half-brother; awarded £26.13s.4d. p.a. from Writtle, Essex, before Mich. 1441, but not paid until 1443 (ibid., fo. 24).

John Burgh (esquire 1442, knight 1447): steward of Caus 1447–58; awarded 10 marks p.a. for life from Caus, Salop., by indentures of Sept. 1441; to provide armed men as required & serve the Duke before all others in England (ibid., fo. 18).
