We explore the stability of matching boundary conditions in one space dimension, which were proposed recently for atomic simulations (Wang and Tang, Int. J. Numer. Mech. Eng., 93 (2013), pp. 1255–1285). For a finite segment of the linear harmonic chain, we construct explicit energy functionals that decay along with time. For a nonlinear atomic chain with its nonlinearity vanished around the boundaries, an energy functional is constructed for the first order matching boundary condition. Numerical verifications are also presented.

In this paper, we study the mathematical formulation for an optimal control problem governed by a linear parabolic integro-differential equation and present the optimality conditions. We then set up its weak formulation and the finite element approximation scheme. Based on these we derive the a priori error estimates for its finite element approximation both in H1 and L2 norms. Furthermore some numerical tests are presented to verify the theoretical results.

The significance of flow optimization utilizing the lattice Boltzmann (LB) method becomes obvious regarding its advantages as a novel flow field solution method compared to the other conventional computational fluid dynamics techniques. These unique characteristics of the LB method form the main idea of its application to optimization problems. In this research, for the first time, both continuous and discrete adjoint equations were extracted based on the LB method using a general procedure with low implementation cost. The proposed approach could be performed similarly for any optimization problem with the corresponding cost function and design variables vector. Moreover, this approach was not limited to flow fields and could be employed for steady as well as unsteady flows. Initially, the continuous and discrete adjoint LB equations and the cost function gradient vector were derived mathematically in detail using the continuous and discrete LB equations in space and time, respectively. Meanwhile, new adjoint concepts in lattice space were introduced. Finally, the analytical evaluation of the adjoint distribution functions and the cost function gradients was carried out.

In this work, vortex convection is simulated using a dynamic mesh adaptation procedure. In each adaptation period, the mesh is refined in the regions where the phenomena evolve and is coarsened in the regions where the phenomena deviate since the last adaptation. A simple indicator of mesh adaptation that accounts for the solution progression is defined. The generation of dynamic adaptive meshes is based on multilevel refinement/coarsening. The efficiency and accuracy of the present procedure are validated by simulating vortex convection in a uniform flow. Two unsteady compressible turbulent flows involving blade-vortex interactions are investigated to demonstrate further the applicability of the procedure. Computed results agree well with the published experimental data or numerical results.

We apply the multiscale basis functions for the singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion problem on adaptively graded meshes, which can provide a good balance between the numerical accuracy and computational cost. The multiscale space is built through standard finite element basis functions enriched with multiscale basis functions. The multiscale basis functions have abilities to capture originally perturbed information in the local problem, as a result our method is capable of reducing the boundary layer errors remarkably on graded meshes, where the layer-adapted meshes are generated by a given parameter. Through numerical experiments we demonstrate that the multiscale method can acquire second order convergence in the L2 norm and first order convergence in the energy norm on graded meshes, which is independent of ɛ. In contrast with the conventional methods, our method is much more accurate and effective.

A semi-discrete scheme about time for the non-stationary Navier-Stokes equations is presented firstly, then a new fully discrete finite volume element (FVE) formulation based on macroelement is directly established from the semi-discrete scheme about time. And the error estimates for the fully discrete FVE solutions are derived by means of the technique of the standard finite element method. It is shown by numerical experiments that the numerical results are consistent with theoretical conclusions. Moreover, it is shown that the FVE method is feasible and efficient for finding the numerical solutions of the non-stationary Navier-Stokes equations and it is one of the most effective numerical methods among the FVE formulation, the finite element formulation, and the finite difference scheme.

This paper is devoted to a new high-accuracy finite difference scheme for solving reaction-convection-diffusion problems with a small diffusivity ε. With a novel treatment for the reaction term, we first derive a difference scheme of accuracy O(εh2+εh2+h3) for the 1-D case. Using the alternating direction technique, we then extend the scheme to the 2-D case on a nine-point stencil. We apply the high-accuracy finite difference scheme to solve the 2-D steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the stream function-vorticity formulation. Numerical examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed difference scheme. Comparisons made with some high-order compact difference schemes show that the newly proposed scheme can achieve good accuracy with a better stability.

In this paper, we consider a two-scale stabilized finite volume method for the two-dimensional stationary incompressible flow approximated by the lowest equal-order element pair P1 — P1 which do not satisfy the inf-sup condition. The two-scale method consist of solving a small non-linear system on the coarse mesh and then solving a linear Stokes equations on the fine mesh. Convergence of the optimal order in the H1-norm for velocity and the L2-norm for pressure are obtained. The error analysis shows there is the same convergence rate between the two-scale stabilized finite volume solution and the usual stabilized finite volume solution on a fine mesh with relation h = 𝾪 (H2). Numerical experiments completely confirm theoretic results. Therefore, this method presented in this paper is of practical importance in scientific computation.

In this paper, we study wave interaction with an emerged porous media. The governing equation is shallow water equations with a friction term of the linearized Dupuit-Forcheimer’s formula. From the continuity of surface and horizontal flux, we derived the wave reflection and transmission coefficient formulas. They are similar with the corresponding formulas of the submerged solid bar breakwater. We solve the equations numerically using finite volume method on a staggered grid. The numerical wave reduction in the porous media confirms the analytical wave transmission curve.

The Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy condition (The CFL condition) is appeared in the analysis of the finite difference method applied to linear hyperbolic partial differential equations. We give a remark on the CFL condition from a view point of stability, and we give some numerical experiments which show instability of numerical solutions even under the CFL condition. We give a mathematical model for rounding errors in order to explain the instability.
