One of the agro-environmental characteristics of Brittany is the extensive use of pesticides, which leads to high concentrations of atrazine in continental water systems. Periphytic algae play a basic part in aquatic ecosystems and some of them, diatoms, are highly sensitive to environmental changes. Analyses of diatoms can thus indicate the impact of a herbicide on aquatic systems. We compared the effects of two herbicides (atrazine and nicosulfuron) on an aquatic ecosystem in 1998. This study was conducted in 15 identical ponds, each containing a holder for installing artificial substrates. The periphytic diatoms were analysed for cell density, biomass, species diversity and morphology. The general specific diversity was poor, and the diatom community was essentially dominated by Achnanthidium minutissimum. The first results showed a strong similarity between the different categories of mesocosms. Chlorophyll a concentration only seems to be affected by high herbicide concentrations.

Limnological surveys from the pelagic zone of Lake Pont-de-Salars were undertaken during the 1993-1996 period, which included the emptying of the whole-lake in summer 1995 and the first post year refilling. This reservoir was warm and monomictic and was determined to vary between oligo- and meso-eutrophic status from year to year. Three sediment cores were collected from the deepest zone and frozen in situ during the short drying period, just after the emptying and before the refilling of the reservoir. Analysis of the relative abundance and vertical distribution of diatom taxa was undertaken. The diatom vertical distribution, evident by visual biostratigraphy, is confirmed by the correspondence analysis (CA) despite of absence of sediment dating.

L'effet de la salinité (0,3 - 0,45 et 2,45 g.L-1) et de la dureté (250 - 500 g.L-1 (CaCO3) sur la toxicité de Al, Cu, Cr, Cd, Ni, Zn vis-à-vis de Daphnia magna est étudiée en laboratoire. Les concentrations en ions métalliques varient entre 0,01 et 25 mg.L-1. Les résultats obtenus à 20°C montrent que la toxicité mesurée en CI50 24 h et CI50 48 h (CI = Concentration d'Inhibition) de Cd, Cu, Zn et Al augmente avec un accroissement de la salinité ou de la dureté. Par contre, la toxicité de Ni et Cr est atténuée malgré l'accroissement de la salinité du milieu. L'augmentation de la dureté entraîne une réduction de la toxicité du chrome.

Dans le cadre d'un programme de sélection de microalgues potentiellement valorisables, l'influence des facteurshéliothermiques sur la croissance de trois espèces de Scenedesmus (S. abundans, S. dimorphus et S. ecornis) a étéétudiée sur des cultures réalisées en milieu fini et en conditions nutritionnelles non limitantes. Pour chacune des troisespèces, les effets de l'intensité lumineuse (de 30 à 560 µmole quanta.m-2.s-1), de la température (de 10 à 35°C) etde la photopériode sur les taux de croissance ont été mesurés puis modélisés. Les résultats obtenus démontrent le caractèremésophile des trois microalgues avec un optimum thermique de 30°C pour S. ecornis et de 35°C pour lesdeux autres espèces. L'existence d'une interaction étroite entre l'intensité lumineuse et la température sur la croissancedes trois microalgues a également été mise en évidence. De même, une influence très nette de la photopériodesur la croissance des trois espèces a été relevée. Dans les conditions optimales de culture, les taux de croissancemaximaux observés sont respectivement de 2,1 d-1 pour S. ecornis, 1,95 d-1 pour S. abundans et 1,5 d-1 pour S. dimorphus.Les effets des facteurs héliothermiques sur la croissance des microalgues étudiées ont pu être restitués demanière satisfaisante par trois modèles mathématiques. Les résultats obtenus indiquent que les trois espèces de Scenedesmussont parfaitement adaptées aux conditions climatiques de la région de Marrakech. Leur culture en masse,à des fins appliquées, pourrait donc être envisageable.

A preliminary study of the rotifer fauna of Ile Amsterdam (T.A.A.F.), southern Indian Ocean, yielded seven taxa. Brachionus amsterdamensis sp. nov. is described. Information on the morphology of the trophi of Brachionus dimidiatus is presented.

Historically, the Kissimmee River meandered over an extensive floodplain wetland. In response to catastrophic flooding and settlement pressures in Central Florida, the Kissimmee was channelized, converting the complex, braided channel into a straightened canal. The result has been a sharp decrease in fringing wetland habitat and associated biota. Soon after channelization was completed, environmental concerns prompted the State of Florida to start examining options for restoration to reestablish the river's natural hydrology and restore lost wetland habitat. The grass shrimp, Palaemonetes paludosus has been identified as a keystone invertebrate species in this system. This study was designed to examine its distribution, diel movement, and growth within the two dominant macrophyte communities of the Kissimmee River riparian marsh: Nuphar and Polygonum. Results indicated that grass shrimp were more abundant in Polygonum beds. This species also showed no well-defined diel migration, although we found a significant vertical pattern in some instances. Palaemonetes paludosus growth was highest on periphyton and Polygonum leaves. Grass shrimp distribution may be explained by their decreased susceptibility to predation because of the higher habitat complexity inherent in Polygonum beds.

A l'occasion de recherches sur la dermatite cercarienne qui affecte le lac d'Annecy, un des plus grands lacs alpins français,un inventaire des populations de mollusques de sa zone littorale a été réalisé. Les gastéropodes sont assez mal représentés et lesespèces qui sont généralement des éléments dominants de la faune lacustre comme Valvata piscinalis, Bithynia tentaculata ouPlanorbis carinatus sont peu abondantes. Les nombreux aménagements du littoral qui ont fortement réduit la superficie des ceinturesvégétales sont probablement responsables de cette situation. En revanche, les peuplements de Sphaeriidae, dominés parPisidium subtruncatum, P. henslowanum et P. moitessierianum sont abondants et bien diversifiés.Au cours des 40 dernières années, 6 nouvelles espèces se sont installées dans le lac d'Annecy. Trois d'entre elles ont actuellementlargement colonisé le plan d'eau. Il s'agit de Dreissena polymorpha, Potamopyrgus antipodarum et de Pisidium moitessierianum.L'apparition récente de cette dernière, qui vit seulement dans les grands lacs de plaine et le potamon des cours d'eaucontrairement aux autres Pisidium du lac, pourrait être une conséquence du réchauffement climatique.

Une étude de la distribution spatiale épiphytique sur une plante aquatique commune des sources karstiques méditerranéennes a été effectuée à l'échelle du microhabitat, sur différentes feuilles d'Apium nodiflorum. Des découpages longitudinaux et transversaux sur toute la longueur du foliole ont été réalisés et analysés séparément. Hormis de fortes variations liées à chaque individu macrophytique, les premiers résultats, obtenus sur 48 folioles, prélevés en automne et en été, révèlent l'existence d'une microrépartition effective et non stochastique des epiphytes sur les différentes parties architecturales de la plante-hôte, ainsi qu'une homogéneité des communautés algales sur la hauteur totale de la plante. Cette approche méthodologique a permis de mettre en évidence des microzones représentatives de la richesse spécifique et de la biomasse totale du peuplement épiphytique. Cette approche pourrait faire l'objet d'études élargies à d'autres macrophytes et être utilisée par les limnologues comme outil d'observation du peuplement épiphytique en rivières.

Based on field observations performed in 1999 and 2000, the exotic amphipod Dikerogammarus villosus is now well established throughout the navigable sector of the River Moselle in France. D. villosus co-occurs with Gammarus pulex, G. tigrinus and D. haemobaphes, another recent exotic species found in this tributary of the River Rhine. The maximal size of individuals of D. villosus collected (15.7 mm) is lower in the River Moselle than in other basins, where this species could reach up to 30 mm (Neseman et al. 1995). Nevertheless it represents the largest gammarids found in the French sector of the River Moselle. Other particular traits are its wide phenotypic plasticity, varying from a melanic to a striped form, and its predatory behavior. These particular traits may favour the establishment of this species on a recipient ecosystem. The occurrence of D. villosus was noted in the Alsace Canal and in the River Rhône, showing that its immigration across French hydrosystems is still in progress.

Dans le cadre de la gestion préventive des zones humides, une analyse descriptive des communautés malacologiques a été réaliséependant la saison sèche dans deux hydrosystèmes interconnectés, lentique et lotique, d'une zone humide. Au total, 2182Mollusques ont été collectés, appartenant à 6 familles de Gastéropodes (Hydrobiidae, Planorbidae, Physidae, Lymnaeidae,Ancylidae, Acroloxidae) et une famille de Bivalves (Sphaeriidae). Malgré une connexion entre les deux hydrosystèmes, les communautéssont très différentes et la richesse spécifique est nettement supérieure dans le milieu lentique vs lotique. Les Bivalves,très rares dans le cours d'eau, représentent la moitié des Mollusques dans le bras mort. Les Gastéropodes du bras mort sont exclusivementdes Pulmonés (8 espèces) alors que ceux du cours d'eau appartiennent pour 99,5 % à une seule espèce de Prosobranche,Potamopyrgus antipodarum. Les exigences écologiques des Mollusques sont discutées en relation avec les caractéristiques desdeux milieux, mais ne suffisent pas à expliquer l'extrême rareté d'espèces communes.

The genus Labiobaetis recently has been reported from Madagascar by Lugo-Ortiz and McCafferty (1997). The two described species were only known from the nymphal stage. Examination of material from more than 800 samples in Madagascar allows descriptions of six new species: Labiobaetis longicercus, L. dambrensis, L. nigrocercus, L. vulgaris, L. punctatus and L. gilliesi. They can be distinguished easily by the shape of the second segment of the labial palp, the shape of the second segment of the maxillary palp, the setation of the labrum, the number of gills, the presence or absence of hindwings and coloration of the abdomen. At present, the imagoes of only five of the eight species are known. They can be identified by the presence or absence of hindwings, coloration of the wings, shape of the sclerotized process between gonopods and shape of the third segment of the gonopods. As all the species assigned to Labiobaetis were recently reassigned to Pseudocloeon, the status and validity of the genera Labiobaetis and Pseudocloeon are discussed.

L'interdépendance de la lumière et de la température a été étudiée, sur une culture non axénique de Microcystis aeruginosa, isolée de la retenue eutrophe El Kansera. Les expériences ont été réalisées dans une plage de température de 15 à 30 °C et des lumières comprises entre 5 et 500 μE. m- 2. s-1 , sous une photopériode de 15/9. Le taux de croissance maximal (μmax = 0.92 j- 1 ) a été obtenu, en culture batch sans bullage, sous une température de 20 °C (± 1°C) et une lumière optimale (Iopt) de 115 μE.m-2.s-1. Le suivi de la culture de cette espèce, sous des conditions de lumière et de température suboptimales et dans des conditions non limitantes en nutriments, montre que les deux paramètres utilisés pour l'estimation de la biomasse (chlorophylle a et densité optique) présentent une bonne corrélation (r2 = 0.98). Une carence en nutriments (N, P) induit une diminution des teneurs en pigments cellulaires, beaucoup plus marquée dans le cas de l'azote. Les réserves intracellulaires et les capacités de stockage des nutriments N et P (quotas internes en azote et phosphore) ont été déterminées expérimentalement. Les résultats obtenus montrent que cette cyanobactérie est capable de stocker beaucoup plus de phosphore que d'azote et que les teneurs en chlorophylle a évoluent en relation avec le niveau de carence.

Rangabradya n. gen. and Rangabradya indica n. sp. from the subterranean freshwaters of India axe described. The new genusbelongs to a group of genera in the family Ectinosomatidae Sars, 1904 possessing fusiform body shape and it is very similar tothe genus Halectinosoma Lang, 1944. The new genus has the exopodite and basiendopodite of the fifth leg completely fused,without surface seta, as well as a characteristic appearance of the antennula, antenna and maxilla. The position of the genusRangabradya n.gen. within the family Ectinosomatidae is discussed.

Le genre Setodes est signalé pour la première fois à Madagascar. Cinq espèces nouvelles sont décrites. Les affinités de ce petit groupe relativement homogène sont asiatiques et l'hypothèse d'une colonisation probable de la Grande Île depuis l'Inde est discutée. La répartition géographique et l'écologie des espèces sont analysées en fonction de l'altitude et de la distance de la source.

Twenty-two species of aquatic Diptera have been collected from 16 sites on the Iberian peninsula. Three Dixidae : Dixa nebulosa Meigen, D. puberula Loew, D. submaculata Edwards; three Thaumaleidae: Thaumalea miki Edwards, T. pyrenaica Edwards, T. verralli Edwards ; and sixteen aquatic Empididae (Hemerodromiinae and Clinocerinae): Hemerodromia adulatoria Collin, H. baetica Collin, H. gaditana nov. spec., Wiedemannia mirousei Vaillant, W. fallaciosa (Loew), W. hygrobia (Loew), W. digitata Vaillant, W. tiburica nov. spec, Clinocera barbatula Mik, C. madicola Vaillant, C. tenella Wahlberg, C. nigra (Meigen), C. fontinalis (Haliday), C. stagnalis (Haliday), C. wesmaeli Macquart and Dolichocephala ocellata Costa. Two species are new to science and several others are recorded for the first time in Spain or Andorra, although their occurrence was expected because many records were based on collections from the French Pyrenees.

The Sheldon & Oswood (1977) model, that predicts a linear relationship between log filter-feeder density and log distance from a lake and assumes proportionality between filter-feeder density and seston concentration, was tested on data from four lake-outlet streams. In addition, longitudinal changes in species composition and body size in zooplankton were investigated. Most filter feeders deviated from the model and a quadratic, rather than linear, decrease in density was a common pattern. Total filter feeders and blackfly larvae showed a hump-shaped distribution pattern. Lower current velocity at sites close to lakes is suggested as an explanation. No general proportional relationship between net-spinning caddis larvae and zooplankton was found and several reasons for this result are discussed. Zooplankton biomass and mean zooplankton body length decreased with distance from lakes. The abundance of cyclopoid adults, copepodites, and nauplii declined at a higher rate than Bosmina spp. This result indicates that factors such as selective predation by filter-feeders and/or taxon-specific sedimentation rates, are acting to reduce zooplankton abundance in these lake-outlet streams.

The chironomid populations of a 6th order section (400 m) of the middle Garonne river were studied monthly from September 1996 to October 1997. For the first time the main channel of the river was investigated including two floodplain waters : a side arm and an oxbow. Two sampling techniques were used for drift and benthic collections. A total of 21 766 specimens (pupae and pupal exuviae) were sorted and 137 species were identified. Among these, 12 species are new for the fauna of France : their ecology and biogeography are given. The chironomid population of the backwaters is especially diverse and distinctive since the waterbody is disconnected from the main channel. The studied section appears to be transitional corresponding with the epipotamal-metapotamal zones. The embankment of the watercourse since 1958, which has isolated floodplain waters and increased the current velocity in the main channel, mainly explains the dual typologic status observed. The main channel is colonised by rheophilous Orthocladiinae whereas the backwaters shelter a mixed population of limnophilous Chironominae and potamobiont Orthocladiinae. This study demonstrates the urgency for preserving floodplain waters because of their species richness, their uniqueness and their faunal interaction with the main channel. The strong faunal contribution of floodplain waters highlights the topicality and the value in investigating the less disturbed potamal zones of large rivers to increase our knowledge on biodiversity, ecology and biogeography of chironomid populations.

Field and laboratory studies on 11 populations of Galba truncatula were performed to determine the survival rate of snails after aestivation, to specify the range of their shell heights, and to establish the percentage of G. truncatula which burrowed in soil when summer drying occurred. These investigations were performed using six lowland populations living in central France (alt. 206-282 m) and five highland populations, located in the Massif central (alt. 806-900 m). The survival rate of G. truncatula after flooding dried soil with water was significantly higher in the highland than in the lowland populations (69.5-80.7 % in road ditches, for example, instead of 29.3-33.0%). The mean shell heights of surviving snails and the durations of snail re-activation in water did not show any significant variation, whatever the origin of snail population. The percentages of snails buried in drying soil were higher in the highland population (13.0 % and 15.0 % of juvenile snails, for example, instead of 4.0 % and 7.7 % in lowland snails). In the lowland population only young snails buried, whereas 5.8-8.3 % of adults in the highland population were partially burrowing. The local climate of the sites studied in the Massif central, and the ability of snails to burrow into the mud when stagnant water disappeared in July, might explain the higher survival rate during aestivation.

The chironomid fauna ot the Western part of France has been notably understudied ; few data are available on species distribution for the region. This paper provides some information obtained from several studies conducted in the eastern part of Brittany. Although a small part of this region is considered, the checklist comprises 94 species, four of which are recorded for the first time in France.

A taxonomic and biogeographic study of the Pyrenean Leuctridae is presented. Keys for males and females of 32 Leuctridaespecies are given.The male of Pachyleuctra bertrandi Aubert, 1952 is described completely for the first time ; P. ribauti Despax, 1929 is restoredas a valid species ; Leuctra ariega Pardo & Vinçon, 1995, L. garumna Vinçon & Ravizza, 1996 and L. prima Kempnyi,1899 are new for the Iberian Peninsula ; L. espanoli Aubert, 1956 is new for the French Fauna.
