1 In the U.S.S.R. the conventional names of the minorities have in general been replaced by the native names; thus the official designation of the Cheremiss (Russian is now Mari, the native name. In these reviews I give both names once, but afterwards use the conventional name (cf., however, Leeds Studies in English and Kindred Languages, ii, 6; iii, 57–9; BSOS., VIII, 227–234), exceptin the case of Yenisei-Ostyak for which I use the official name, Ket.
