The theme of the 2024 Joint Annual meeting of the Entomological Society of Canada and Société d'entomologie du Québec is “The good, the bad, and the ugly: A matter of perspective.” This special collection celebrates that theme by highlighting papers from past volumes of The Canadian Entomologist – nominated by ESC-SEC members and the editorial board – that we felt broadly fit into one or more of the good/bad/ugly categories. The papers span publishing dates from 1963 to 2022. Topics range from (good) pollinators, natural enemies, and basic ecological principles, to (bad) insect pests in various contexts, to (ugly) the spread of the mountain pine beetle into its new geographic range and the potential spread of the spongy moth to the west coast. We hope that you enjoy reading or rereading these papers, and that perhaps they will spur some new and interesting research questions and collaborations.
