Motived by an intrinisic necessary condition for the purifiability of subgroups of primary abelian groups due to K. Benabdallah and T. Okuyama we introduce new functors on the category of pairs (G, A),where A is a subgroup of G,to the category of Z/pZ-vector spaces. The vanishing of these functors leads to the notion of vertical subgroup which is a weakening of purity but also an essential component of the latter. In fact, a vertical subgroup is pure if and only if it is neat. We establish various facts about vertical subgroups and “maximal” vertical subgroups and apply the resulting theory to the problem of purifiability. We show that the class of quasi-complete groups is precisely the class of reduced groups in which every subgroup satisfying the intrinsic necessary condition for purifiability is in fact purifiable. This is also the class of reduced p-groups in which the maximal vertical subgroups are precisely the pure subgroups.

The problem of linear independence of the integer translates of μ * B, where μ is a compactly supported distribution and B is an exponential box spline, is considered in this paper. The main result relates the linear independence issue with the distribution of the zeros of the Fourier-Laplace transform, of μ on certain linear manifolds associated with B. The proof of our result makes an essential use of the necessary and sufficient condition derived in [12]. Several applications to specific situations are discussed. Particularly, it is shown that if the support of μ is small enough then linear independence is guaranteed provided that does not vanish at a certain finite set of critical points associated with B. Also, the results here provide a new proof of the linear independence condition for the translates of B itself.

Let R be a commutative domain with 1, Q its field of quotients, and M a torsion-free R module. By a balanced submodule of M is meant an RD-submodule N [i.e. rN = N ∩ rM for each r ∈ R] such that, for every R-submodule J of Q, every homomorphism η : J → M/N can be lifted to a homomorphism χ:J → M. This definition extends the notion of balancedness as introduced in abelian groups (see e.g. [10, p. 113]). The balanced-projective R-modules can be characterized as summands of completely decomposable R-modules (i.e. summands of direct sums of submodules of Q). If R is a valuation domain, then such summands are again completely decomposable; see [12, p. 275].

A fundamental problem in Fourier analysis is to characterize the behaviour of a function (or distribution) whose Fourier transform vanishes in some particular set. Of course, this is, in general, a very difficult question and little seems to be known, except in some special cases. For example, a theorem of Paley-Wiener (Theorem XII in [6]) characterizes exactly the behaviour of the modulus of a function in L2(R) whose Fourier transform vanishes on a half-line.

We show that a certain category 𝓖 whose objects are pairs G ⊃ H of groups subject to simple axioms is equivalent to the category of ≥ 2-dimensional vector spaces and injective semi-linear maps; and deduce via the "Fundamental Theorem of Projective Geometry" that the category of ≥ 2-dimensional projective spaces is equivalent to the quotient of a suitable subcategory of 𝓖 by the least equivalence relation which identifies conjugation by any element of H with the identity automorphism of G.

We construct a one-parameter automorphism group of the injective type II1 factor with Connes spectrum ﹛0﹜ which is not stably conjugate to an infinite tensor product action. We construct a countable family of one-parameter automorphism groups of the injective type II1 factor such that all are stably conjugate but no two are cocycle conjugate.

Berg's interchange technique is generalized to the context of certain new objects called pseudo-actions. This is used to find a more geometric proof of the Pimsner-Voiculescu theorem on the AF embedding of the irrational rotation algebras. Connections with Berg's original results are briefly examined.

Embedding diagrams are introduced to provide a uniform way of describing embeddings of transformation group C*-algebras C(X) ⋊ ℤ into AF algebras. Pimsner has classified the transformation group C* -algebras which can be AF embedded. We present a new proof of this result using embedding diagrams and pseudo-actions. The need to calculate the join of an open cover with its iterates under the transformation has been eliminated.

Let dbe a positive square-free integer and let Od denote the ring of integers in . The groups PSL2(Od) are collectively known as the Bianchi groups and have been widely studied from the viewpoints of group theory, number theory and low-dimensional topology. The interest of the present article is in geometric Fuchsian subgroups of the groups PSL2(Od). Clearly PSL2 is such a subgroup; however results of [18], [19] show that the Bianchi groups are rich in Fuchsian subgroups.

The following special function of two real variables x2 and x1 is considered: and its connections with the incomplete Gaussian sums where ω are intervals of length |ω| ≤1. In particular, it is proved that for each fixed x2 and uniformly in X2 the function H(x2, x1) is of weakly bounded 2-variation in the variable x1 over the period [0, 1]. In terms of the sums W this means that for collections Ω = {ωk}, consisting of nonoverlapping intervals ωk ∪ [0,1) the following estimate is valid: where card denotes the number of elements, and c is an absolute positive constant. The exact value of the best absolute constant к in the estimate (which is due to G. H. Hardy and J. E. Littlewood) is discussed.
