Adult survivors of aortic interruption is extremely rare. Diagnosis mostly depends on additional imaging with CT and MRI. We present a rare case of acquired complete interruption of the aorta that was found incidentally at the time of coronary angiography. This finding was confirmed by CT scan.

We report a left atrial appendage diverticulum in close proximity to the left coronary artery, thereby mimicking a fistulous connection between the two structures.

We present the case of a newborn with tetralogy of Fallot and pulmonary atresia, with a right pulmonary artery from the ascending aorta, and a left pulmonary artery arising from the right coronary artery via an indirect aortopulmonary collateral. The embryogenesis of this unusual combination of pulmonary blood supply has significant implications when considering normal migration of the aortopulmonary septum.

We report a case of cardiac rhabdomyomas in an infant who presented with right ventricular tachycardia, and a clinical picture of infective endocarditis. Typical features of tuberous sclerosis developed subsequently. To the best of our knowledge, cardiac rhabdomyoma has not been reported previously in association with infective endocarditis.

A Japanese girl first pointed out the mass in the left atrial appendage by the echocardiography on the 3rd day of life. At 30th day of life, the mass in the left atrial appendage was excised en bloc successfully under cardiopulmonary bypass because it appeared mobile. Its pathologic finding revealed an old organised thrombus. She is doing well with no episode of thrombus formation or thromboembolism, 2 years postoperatively.

We report a rare case of pulmonary prosthetic valve endocarditis due to Aspergillus fumigatus, associated with septic pulmonary embolism and secondary pulmonary hypertension, in a 4-year-old boy with surgically corrected tetralogy of Fallot. The diagnosis and treatment of Aspergillus endocarditis remains highly challenging. The best therapeutic option for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension due to an infectious thromboembolic event is highly debatable and the results are poor.

Inverted left atrial appendage is an unusual complication associated with congenital cardiac surgery. Inversion of the left atrial appendage may occur during the surgical procedure or afterwards. The left atrial appendage may invert iatrogenically or as a result of the negative pressure during placement or removal of the left atrial vent or during deairing manoeuvres. This event can be life-threatening because of the mass effect of the atrial appendage within the left atrial cavity.

Iatrogenic Horner’s syndrome is a rare complication that can occur after trauma, cervical central line insertion, chest tube insertion, and rarely following adult thoracic and neck surgery, especially in high risk patients with hypertension and diabetes. The majority of cases reported in the literature describe non-iatrogenic Horner’s syndrome in adults as an unusual presentation for cervical tumours or apical lung carcinoma. In children, there are some reports describing acquired Horner’s syndrome following trauma or invasive intervention near the cervical–thoracic area. Less has been written about the incidence of Horner’s syndrome following paediatric cardiac surgery.

A two-year-old boy with a background history of Down syndrome and partial atrioventricular septal defect presented with acute respiratory distress requiring intubation and mechanical ventilation. He continued to deteriorate, despite ventilation; direct laryngoscopy, bronchoscopy, and computed tomography demonstrated severe long segment tracheal stenosis. He was placed on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation to stabilise his condition. A slide tracheoplasty and complete repair of the partial atrioventricular septal defect was successfully undertaken. His post-operative recovery was complicated by myocardial infarction and stroke but he made a full recovery. This represents the first report of slide tracheoplasty and partial atrioventricular septal defect repair in a child following extracorporeal membrane oxygenation support.

We present the case of an infant with three distinct outflow tracts from the right ventricle. Three outlets from the heart have been previously named the “Tritruncal Heart”. We review the two previously reported cases of tritruncal hearts and describe the anatomy, diagnosis, surgical management, and outcome of our case. Embryologic implications are also discussed.

Uhl’s anomaly is an evolutive disease leading to terminal right ventricular failure. The most difficult differential diagnosis at presentation is the Ebstein disease. We describe the evolution of a foetus with Uhl’s anomaly from 21 to 30 weeks of gestation, with progressive reduction in the right ventricular anterior myocardium suggestive of apoptosis, leading to foetal demise.

A 10-year-old boy with polyvalvular dysplasia and severe involvement of both atrioventricular valves presented with palpitations. Concern was raised for atrial tachyarrhythmia due to biatrial enlargement; however, ambulatory monitoring discovered a reentrant mechanism. Electrophysiology study revealed atypical atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia involving two components of the slow pathway, with inputs in the posterior septum around his dysplastic tricuspid valve. He underwent successful modification of the slow pathway using cryoablation.

Left ventricular to right atrial communication is a rare congenital or acquired heart defect. There are many reports of successful transcatheter closure of this defect. We describe the device closure of one such communication in a 5-year-old girl using the Occlutech duct occluder. We believe that this device may have some advantages over the devices previously used for this purpose.

Klippel–Feil syndrome is a skeletal disorder characterised by low hairline and a short neck due to abnormal fusion of two or more cervical vertebrae. Although congenital heart and lung defects are infrequent, some abnormalities such as cor triatriatum, coarctation of the aorta, total anomalous pulmonary venous connection, or lung agenesis have been reported. The challenge of recognising Klippel–Feil syndrome lies in the fact that there is an association of this syndrome with other significant conditions such as skeletal, genitourinary, neurological, ear, and some cardiac defects. We report a Klippel–Feil syndrome type III 14-year-old patient with a levo-looped transposition of the great arteries. In addition, the patient had agenesis of the left upper-lung lobe.

The window duct is a rare congenital anomaly that is physiologically similar to an aortopulmonary window but is extrapericardial at the distal pulmonary trunk. The diagnosis is challenging, and surgical management is complex. Our patient is the first and the youngest to be reported with successful closure and diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging.

A 20 year-old woman presented with systemic embolisation. On subsequent investigation, she was diagnosed with a congenital left atrial appendage aneurysm. Few case reports are reported in the literature. This cardiac malformation presents a diagnostic challenge in patients with cardiomegaly.

Long QT syndromes encompass the most prevalent group of ion channelopathies. Long QT syndromes are predominantly familial and predispose the affected individual to ventricular arrhythmias and sudden death. Permanent pacemaker insertion for long QT syndrome is discouraged apart from younger patients exhibiting 2:1 atrioventricular block. However, permanent pacemaker insertion is a relatively common procedure in neonates with atrioventricular block, and dual-chamber permanent pacemaker insertion in low birth weight infants is challenging. We describe the management of long QT syndrome − type 2 − presenting in an extremely preterm neonate including epicardial, dual-chamber permanent pacemaker insertion.

The CentriMag ventricular assist device is an extracorporeal, third-generation, continuous flow device. The rapidity and simplicity of operation along with low priming volume make it attractive for use in children with refractory heart failure. We report the successful use of CentriMag as a bridge to recovery in a child and discuss issues that are unique to its use in children.

VACTERL association and Scimitar syndrome are rare congenital diseases. In this study, we report on a neonate with prenatal suspicion of VACTERL association and small left-sided cardiac structures, which, only on postnatal angiography, could be revealed to be part of a Scimitar syndrome. As this is the second reported case of VACTERL association and Scimitar syndrome, the presence of Scimitar syndrome should be considered in the prenatal and postnatal evaluation of VACTERL association.
