Motivation

The Design Science Journal Thematic Collection on “Design Creativity through Multiple Lenses - Perspectives across Disciplines and Regions”  aims to present an overarching vision of the diverse perspectives in Design Creativity studies today, and its ability to resonate empathy and harmony in society. This collection aspires to collate studies from  across different disciplines,  cultures and ethos, and garner insights to inform design research, education and practice.

 

Design Creativity can be seen through multiple lenses, from the eyes of the artist, sociologist, neurologist, cognitive scientist, architect or designer, and of course, the user. One’s expertise and education, along with socio-cultural values and philosophical disposition shapes the understanding of ‘creativity’. However, the commonality that strings across all the varied definitions is the quality of inspiration and the ability to create ‘desirable figure’ and experience in society. This Thematic Collection intends to investigate various perspectives on social from across different disciplines and regions.

 

Creativity is inherent to design and is a catalyst to re-figuring and co-creating a better, more harmonious future. Through this Thematic Collection, an attempt is being made to not only bring the global societies closer, but to also create synergy within our design research family.

 

 

Type of paper

We aim for papers that provide new fundamental and applied research, review papers or position papers, in one or more of the topics under this theme (see list of topics below). We encourage reflections on cross-domain/discipline and cross-cultural intersectionality, with the intent to celebrate diversity and resonate empathy and harmony. 

 

Papers will be classified as position papers, review papers or research papers, and suggest that the papers should ;

  • Review history and state-of-the-art of the chosen dimension,
  • Identify issues and gaps upon critical assessment of literature,
  • Describe the conducted research, as applicable, and
  • Provide recommendations for design research, education and practice, as applicable.

 

Thematic Collection Topics (suggestive, but not limited to) : 

  • Design cognition, ideation, inspiration
  • Interaction, communication, interpersonal factors of creativity
  • Co-creation, intersubjectivity, empathy, resonance, social creativity
  • Human-oriented design, design thinking, art thinking, generativity
  • Creativity from the perspective of ;  perception, experience, emotion, mindfulness, well-being 
  • Creativity in the context of; sustainable innovation, social innovation
  • Creativity supported by; design approaches, methods and tools

Important Instructions for submission:

 Please note that this Thematic Collection will follow a two-step process, as below ;


STEP 1

Extended Abstract of the proposed paper must be first submitted by authors to Guest Editors via email. The TC editorial board will review the abstracts and inform the authors if and how they should proceed with a full paper.

Word limit : 500-1000 words outlining the paper’s key contribution, methods, results, keywords; introducing the team and naming the corresponding author, and the key contribution in Design Creativity towards the theme/ topics mentioned below. 

File name: must adhere to the following convention:

TC-DC-<corresponding author last name>_<first name>_<short title>

e.g., TC-DC-Kurosawa_Akira_social aspect of co-design

STEP 2

Full papers of accepted abstracts must be then submitted to the DSJ site as usual for a full review. Accepted abstracts do not imply acceptance of the final paper.

Papers received after the deadlines will still be considered but they may not be part of the collection depending on completion time for their review.
