Le thème le plus fréquemment modulé par la philosophie actuelle, celui de l'intentionnalité de la conscience, s'inscrit à vrai dire dans le courant le plus constant de la philosophia perennis. Il s'agit du souci de rechercher le statut de l'esprit aux prises avec les objets qui ne sont tels que par rapport à sa présence. Un représentant accrédité de la philosophie contemporaine écrit que « le problème de l'existence du monde extérieur ne présente à la rigueur aucun sens quelconque ». En effet, le monde extérieur est affirmé par la conscience immédiate et la tâche dévolue a la conscience réfléchissante, c'est de revenir sur ces données pour les thématiser et établir les rapports essentiels qui les constituent dans l'existence. Une conscience pure qui existerait avant tout contact avec ce qui n'est pas elle semble bien un rêve à jamais évanoui. Avant la mise entre parenthèses prônée par Husserl, la philosophie cartésienne nous assurait que « tout état de conscience en général est en lui-même conscience de quelque chose, quoi qu'il en soit de l'existence réelle de cet objet et quelque abstention que je fasse de la position de cette existence ». Les termes d'intentionnalité et de visée intentionnelle caractérisent cette particularité de la conscience d'être toujours au moins conscience de quelque chose.

La notion de maladie créatrice semble avoir été entrevue par Novalis: « Les maladies sont, certes, une chose importante pour l'humanité, puisque'elles sont si nombreuses et que chaque homme a tant à lutter contre elles. Mais nous ne connaissons que bien imparfaitement l'art de les utiliser. Elles sont probablement la matiére et le stimulant les plus importants pour notre pensée et pour notre activité. II y aurait là une récolte abondante à faire, me semble-t-il, dans le champ intellectuel, dans le domaine de la morale, de la religion, et Dieu sait dans quel autre merveilleux domaine ». A un autre endroit, Novalis déclare que l'hypocondrie est une maladie trés remarquable: « II y a une petite hypocondrie et une hypocondrie sublime. C'est par cette derniére qu'il faudrait essayer de trouver une voie d'accés vers l'âme ». Cette phrase semble indiquer que pour Novalis il existerait des maladies d'essence supérieure et, pourrait-on dire, plus saines que la santé. Inversement il existerait une fausse apparence de santé due à la maladie, comme celle dont une nation en révolution peut donner l'exemple: « II existe une énergie par maladie et par faiblesse, qui donne l'impression d'être plus puissante que la véritable énergie, mais qui céde en laissant dans un état de faiblesse encore plus profonde ».

The question whether linguistic philosophy and phenomenology have any significant common ground has been raised increasingly in recent years. It seems to me that one useful means of exploring this question is to examine descriptions of the very concept of philosophical analysis which each involves so as to suggest relevant similarities in aims and methods. There are many such affinities—and I shall want to mention some, ones which are important for establishing communication between these traditions customarily considered so disparate. There are also fundamental differences not only in techniques and doctrines but in style and, one might say, in cultural temper. This is to say nothing of the extensive variation and bitter disagreements internal to each tradition itself—among the proponents of early and late Wittgenstein, among followers of the early and late Husserl, and, of course, within the personal evolution of these formative giants themselves.

The doctrine I have in mind is the theory of intensional meanings, the theory according to which unitary descriptive expressions (and some complex ones) have not only extensions, but intensions as well. According to this theory, found in fullest flower in Carnap's Meaning and Necessity, individual expressions, one-place predicates and sentences, have corresponding to them individual concepts, properties and propositions respectively, these latter being the intensions, or, meanings, or, logical contents, of the expressions in question. In the first part of this paper I shall attempt to show that the whole theory of intensional entities represents not just an ontological extravagance, but a fairly clear absurdity. In the second I shall sketch briefly an alternative semantical method and in the third shall attempt to exploit this method for the clarification of a couple of puzzles.

One of the central problems in philosophy since Kant has been that of the possibility of a science of human culture. Dilthey, Croce and Collingwood devoted their energies to this task, in an atmosphere marked by an intense hostility between positivists, who represented the tradition of naturalism and historicists, who represented the tradition of humanism. The positivists, led by Comte, Buckle, Mill and Taine, argued for a science of man modelled on the prevailing methods of the natural sciences. Typical of this approach was the attempt by the English historian T. H. Buckle:

to accomplish for the history of man something equivalent, or at all events analogous, to what has been effected by other inquiries for the different branches of the natural sciences.
