There appears to be no good reason for stopping at any one point rather than at another; it is hard to see why the chain of arguments should ever be broken. But the conclusion is ridiculous; it is, for example, preposterous to say that a man whose height is seven feet is, nevertheless, short.

Freud qui a, pour ainsi dire, inauguré l'ère des psychothérapies a été pour beaucoup à l'origine de cette attitude négative. II considérait la philosophic comme le refuge de la fantaisie abstraite, pour ceux qui ne sont plus à même de s'en tenir à l'observation des faits. II partageait ainsi les préjugés les plus communs de la profession médicale de son temps.

L'ethique à Nicomaque s'ouvre par une introduction qui fait problème. Et peut-être le fait-elle davantage de ce que nous sommes habitués d'entendre que pour correspondre à la distinction entre individu, société domestique et société civile, la philosophie morale doit se diviser en trois sciences distinctes qui, à transposer simplement les dénominations anciennes, sont: la Monastique, l'Economique et la Politique. Cette division des sciences morales aurait pour fondement de droit que si l'homme est animal sociable, toute société à laquelle il appartient ne comporte pas plus qu'une unité d'ordre, c'est-à-dire que toutes les opérations que l'homme pose ne sont pas nécessairement des opérations de ces sociétés mêmes, des opérations de l'homme en tant qu'il est formellement partie de ces sociétés. On est ainsi conduit à présumer qu'il ne saurait y avoir de confusion possible entre ces trois sciences: chacune a son nom propre pour se tailler dans l'agir humain un domaine tout à fait spécifique.

If any single controlling principle can be derived from what R. P. Blackmur has called the most sustained, eloquent, and original piece of literary criticism in existence, Henry James's Prefaces, it is that criticism is a creative act. This principle seems both sufficiently important and ambiguous to warrant a close examination of its meaning and consequences. In what follows, then, I propose to examine a theory of criticism as creativity, referring not only to James's remarks but also, and in particular, to an earlier and some ways more accessible version which we find in Robert Browning's work. Undoubtedly, in the great realm of speculation open to the critical theorist there are grander tasks which one could set oneself. Whether there are more difficult ones is another question. As it is, despite their peculiar particularity, both Browning and James are ambitious writers who refuse to be contained within narrow limits. Both demand an awareness of the context of critical theory, a sense of the problematical nature of criticism and the perplexities of the creative act. It is these latter considerations with which I propose to begin.

One of these is the lack of appreciation of the efforts of the American critical realists to attain a direct, referential realism which would avoid the difficulties confronting an intuitional type of naive realism and the well-recognized dilemma of Lockean representative perceptionism. In the latter case, the puzzle is, of course, that, if we perceive subjective ideas, how can we know that they give us cognitive access to external things.

La disparition rećente de Gaston Bachelard n'a donc pas seulement pour effet d'endeuiller la pensée françhise, elle est ressentie comme une invitation à dresser un premier bilan de l'ceuvre qu'il nous a léguée. Or cette oeuvre surprend autant par la profondeur de ses assises culturelles que par l'aisance avec laquelle elle s'introduit puis s'impose, en des secteurs de l'activité humaine qui paraissent souvent fort éloignés les uns des autres. Chez Bachelard ce n'était pas seulement un philosophe doublé d'un homme de science qui parlait, ce qui eut déjà constitué une performance remarquable. C'était aussi un artiste attentif aux rêveries et aux songes et un poète autant qu'un analyste du subconscient. Bachelard a done fait œuvre d'imagination aussi bien que de raison. Il a voulu mener la double vie de l'homme nocturne et de l'homme diurne et de ce fait s'est acquis la double audience des hommes de lettres et des hommes de science.

“Odd though it may be” writes Lewis White Beck, “The Critique of Practical Reason is a neglected work. There is no study of it in any language that can compare favorably with the commentaries on the Critique of Pure Reason. …” This remark reveals a striking condition within Kantian studies. For more than a century and a half scholars have devoted their efforts to the first and third Critiques to the neglect of the second. Professor Beck suggests two reasons for this condition. First, that the Practical Reason is, relative to the Pure Reason and the Judgment, simple and straightforward. Second, that most scholars prefer, when treating Kant's ethical doctrine, the shorter Foundations of the Metaphysics of Morals.

An adequate theory of the self must provide for the fact of human agency. I would like to show that (1) we can put together a theory of human agency from Whitehead's later writings, but that (2) this theory is not satisfactory. This discussion will be, first, expository and then critical of Whitehead's position. An elaboration of Whitehead's theory has two moments. For Whitehead, all factors of the universe are finally derivative from the ultimately actual things, which he calls actual entities. The fact of agency is no exception. The establishment of such agency is the job of what I shall call Whitehead's microscopic theory. We are interested here, however, in the human being as agent. A person, according to Whitehead, is not an actual entity, but a society of actual entities. Whitehead's theory of human agency may be called the macroscopic theory. After an examination of these theories, I shall conclude by briefly criticizing them in two ways. First, for Whitehead there are no acts but only processes. Second, an adequate theory requires a doctrine of the persistence of the agent which Whitehead is unable to provide.

The usual interpretation of Locke's Essay concerning Human Understanding is that he tried to show that all of men's complex ideas were formed by a process of compounding simple ideas. Some commentators say this represents his actual approach o t human knowledge, others say that while parts of the Essay are written in this manner it does not represent his final views. All agree that if this compositionalism is Locke's position then it is inadequate and contains numerous contradictions. It is the thesis of this paper that Locke never was a compositionalist in the required sense and that therefore the inadequacies and contradictions do not exist. Since the compositionalists interpret the Essay mainly on the basis of the classification of ideas in the first edition rather than that in the fourth it will be necessary to examine the two classifications in the Essay to see which does represent Locke's position. It will be found that the fourth edition classification represents his views and that this refutes compositionalism.

My topic is historical rather than philosophical. I want to consider what Kant aimed to achieve in the Critique of Pure Reason. In 1909 Prichard wrote, “Kant's problem is similar to Locke's. Locke states that his purpose is to inquire into the original, certainty, and extent of human knowledge.” Many have maintained that Kant's purpose was to mediate between rationalism and empiricism in epistemology. Hermann Cohen held that the aim of the Critique is to provide a theory of experience, an account of empirical knowledge. Ernst Cassirer and other neo-Kantians have held that its aim is to furnish a philosophy of science.

Bradley always claimed that he was essentially a sceptic; and the fate of Appearance and Reality has been such that this claim should be conceded by every good empiricist. For does not Hume himself declare that sceptical arguments are arguments that “admit of no answer and produce no conviction”? To suggest that all Bradley's arguments fall precisely into this category is certainly to exaggerate, but the fact remains that on the one hand, many criticisms of Bradley have missed their mark, because the opponent has been under-estimated and misunderstood, while on the other hand, Bradley had few disciples and made few converts, even at a time when the philosophical climate was more favourable and less rigorous than it is today.

D'abord il était question d'éviter les « à peu près» quant aux bases de discussion valable sur toute poésie; or, le but de notre exposé ne visait certes pas à polir une définition originale; il allait de soi que nous faisions nôtres les acceptions généralement admises, à commencer par celles de M. Brault. La poésie est rythme, chant, véhicule d'images — et de pensées — susceptibles d'émouvoir; témoignage de notre soif de certitude, prière … II n'en est pas moins vrai que, pendant des siècles, le concept a maintenu gaillardement ses droits dans l'expression poétique à côté du frisson causé par des impondérables et sans toujours, immanquablement, lui nuire. La poésie de Racine est tout de meme conceptuelle; et celle de Vigny — et celle de Chateaubriand si, comme on nous le fait justement remarquer, la poésie dépasse le cadre d'une prosodie plus ou moins traditionnelle.

Autour de quelques points de références, indiqués par des sous-titres, nous voulons grouper en ces quelques pages des réflexions d'ordre purement psychologique sur le libre arbitre. On insiste aujourd'hui sur le caractére subjectif du choix libre, comme expression de toute la personne humaine en son unité la plus profonde. Pourtant, 1'acte libre passe par des facultés réellement distinctes. Les éléments intellectuel et volontaire qui le composent vitalement sont conceptuellement divers et irré-ductibles l'un à l'autre. Comment s'exercent à Pintérieur de Pame l'és relations dynamiques qui les relient l'un à l'autre, c'est-à-dire concrètement entre les jugements d'ordre pratique et les mouvements volontaires? La mise en valeur du caractére subjectif du choix libre se fera-t-elle aux dépens de son objectivité? Et comment cet acte subjectif s'insére-t-il librement au sein d'un indéniable dérminisme, celui de I'éducation, de la culture, du milieu social, etc.?

Prométhée, dieu du Progrès parce qu'il a apporté le feu et les arts aux hommes; Sisyphe, image de la désespérance puisqu'il voit éternellement échapper à ses mains le rocher qu'il a roulé au sommet d'une colline. Trois siècles ont vécu sous le signe de Prométhée, dans une folle confiance en l'homme. La génération actuelle lui préfère Sisyphe dont Camus a interprété le drame intérieur avec tout son génie philosophique. Peut-on rêver quelques instants sur ces thèmes en philosophe et en historien, ou mieux, en historien de la philosophie ?

That x is desired is a necessary but not a sufficient ground for claiming that x is good or that x ought to be or that x is desirable—and these three phrases I take to be synonymous for Dewey. Everything that is desirable is desired but it is not the case that everything that is desired is desirable. What else is needed to make a desire desirable is the main burden of Dewey's ethics.

I May, at a gathering, notice that Peter is sitting very stiffly in his chair. I say to myself, “Perhaps he has a pain. Yes, I think he has some sort of pain.” I have inferred a feeling of some sort from bodily behavior. It is not an impossible thing to do, to infer sometimes a feeling from bodily behavior. But it is a puzzling thing to do, at least in a philosophieal sense. Because we ordinarily hold that we cannot “observe” the feelings of another, that we can never directly confront these feelings, that feelings as actually felt are private to each of us. There may be interesting ways of challenging this sort of remark—for instance, by way of telepathy. But there is an advantage in puzzling over the kind of inference indicated, without the challenge of telepathy or similar abilities.

Bernard Wand presented in this journal an article on the intelligibility of free choice or action. Sections I and II of his paper are devoted to showing that “the libertarian's position is one which makes free choice unintelligible, no matter what the principle of its explanation may be.” Basically his argument appears to be that any libertarian's explanation of free choice will contradict the libertarian thesis simply by being an explanation. Explanations function by the statement of antecedents (reasons or causes) for a fact; but if the fact is a specific 'free choice' in the libertarian sense, then it cannot be explained because, by definition, it has no antededents. If it cannot be explained then it is unintelligible. By this argument Mr. Wand claims to have shown that “the libertarian is forced by the logic of his own position to acknowledge the unintelligibility of free choice. …”
