Introduction. The Brazilian citrus industry is characterized by orange production for processing, with the Rangpur lime (Citrus limonia L. Osbeck) as the predominant rootstock. Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi Macf.) is cultivated on a small scale and represents one of the less studied citrus species. Using other rootstock alternatives to Rangpur lime could increase fruit production and quality. Materials and methods. Ten citrus (Troyer citrange, Swingle citrumelo, Cleopatra mandarin, Valencia Americana sweet orange, Volkamer lemon cv. Catania 2, Nacional and Florida rough lemons, Rangpur lime, Thornton tangelo and trifoliate orange) were evaluated as rootstocks for the Marsh seedless grapefruit in an experiment planted at the Citrus Experimental Station of Bebedouro (EECB), São Paulo State, Brazil, in January 1991. The spacing was 8.0 m between rows and 4.0 m between trees. The experimental design, randomized blocks, presented four replications with three trees per plot. Trees were grown without supplementary irrigation. Yield was evaluated from 1994 through 2000; fruit quality from 1994 through 1999; the tree size in May 2000. Results. For each studied characteristic, the various rootstocks showed significant differences, except for the average weight of the fruit. The data obtained were compared with the results already published in the Brazilian literature. Conclusion. Swingle, Troyer, Cleopatra and trifoliate orange could be used as alternative rootstocks for Marsh seedless grapefruit.

Introduction. En Guinée, la culture des agrumes est soumise au retour de la saison pluvieuse. Il s'ensuit que leur production est groupée d'octobre à janvier et que, le reste de l'année, ces fruits sont quasiment inexistants sur le marché. Une démarche visant à décaler la production de ces arbres, et du limettier Tahiti en particulier, a été entreprise à partir d'un meilleur contrôle de la durée de la période de sécheresse. Matériel et méthodes. L'étude conduite de 1996 à 1999 dans la station de Foulaya en Guinée a permis de comparer six traitements constitués d'un traitement d'arbres en irrigation continue et de cinq traitements de durées de restriction hydrique variables [saison sèche totale ou sécheresse de (30, 45, 60 et 75) j]. Le dispositif a été constitué de quatre blocs aléatoires et la parcelle élémentaire de deux arbres par traitement. La floraison et la production des arbres traités ont été étudiées pendant quatre campagnes de récolte. Résultats et discussion. Des réponses variées ont été observées sur la reprise de la croissance, la date, les densité et durée de la floraison et la production. L'irrigation continue a eu un effet dépressif sur le rendement de -12,6 %. La production a été prolongée sur (4 à 5) mois supplémentaires (fin avril à août) permettant une disponibilité plus longue de la lime Tahiti sur le marché. La plus-value de la production de contre-saison a été de 1,5 à 2,5 fois celle obtenue en saison normale. Conclusion. Des périodes de sécheresse limitées à (30 ou 45) j par le contrôle de l'irrigation ont permis de décaler et d'obtenir des productions moyennes annuelles de (16,8 et 15,1) t$\cdot$ha-1 de limes économiquement plus rentables. Cette approche pourrait être reproduite avantageusement en plantations commerciales de limes Tahiti de contre-saison.

Introduction. The postharvest life of `Pollock' avocado, a popular cultivar grown in Sri Lanka, is 7-10 d at room temperature. A short postharvest life limits its export volume by sea freight. Materials and methods. Pollock avocado fruit were packaged in 0.05 mm thick low-density polyethylene (LDPE) bags to create a modified atmosphere (MA), and they were stored at 12 °C and 94% relative humidity. The effect of the potassium permanganate, an ethylene absorber, and of the granular charcoal, a carbon dioxide absorber, on modifying the in-package atmosphere was tested. During storage, carbon dioxide, oxygen and ethylene contents were measured. The packages were opened after MA storage, and the fruit ripened naturally under ambient conditions. The weight loss, changes in firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), pulp color, visual quality rating (VQR), chilling injury index (CI) and disease index (DI) during or after storage were determined. Results. Compared with the samples packaged without absorbers, those packaged with absorbers had significantly lower carbon dioxide and ethylene contents. MA packaging was effective in extending the postharvest life of Pollock avocado up to 17 d. Inclusion of absorbers further extended the postharvest life up to 29 d. Firmness, TSS, pulp color, VQR, CI and DI of the ripened fruits were not significantly affected by the MA conditions. Discussion. The MA conditions did not alter the ripening process and were successful in preventing the chilling injury and diseases. Packaging of Pollock avocado in 0.05 mm LDPE bags at 1:1 surface to weight ratio (cm$^2\cdot$g-1) with ethylene and carbon dioxide absorbers and storing at 12 °C and 94% relative humidity can be recommended to extend their storage life up to 29 d.

Introduction. The present study had as objectives to measure the palm leaf divergence angle in the field, to determine the frequency of trees and offshoots showing clockwise and counterclockwise phyllotaxis, to establish the relationship between phyllotaxis of the mother tree and that of its offshoots, and, finally, to determine the effect of the divergence angle value on production. Materials and methods. The vegetal material was composed of four Moroccan cultivars of Phœnix dactylifera L. Observations were conducted in the south of Morocco on 20 trees per cultivar and four offshoots per tree. The divergence angle was measured on adult trees whereas phyllotaxic direction (clockwise or counterclockwise) was noted for both offshoots and adult trees. Results and discussion. This study showed that the phyllotaxic direction of the offshoots presents a clockwise or counterclockwise phyllotaxis independently of the mother plant. The divergence angle varied depending on the cultivar. This character is an interesting criterion, both for the selection of the best adapted cultivars for the marginal date palm growing regions, and for an optimal production.

Introduction.Detarium microcarpum Guill. et Perr., espèce forestière fruitière de la zone soudano-sahélienne, est actuellement menacée de disparition au sud du Mali suite à des actions anthropiques. L'objectif global des travaux présentés a été d'inventorier les connaissances des populations locales sur la plante afin d'acquérir des informations relatives à la caractérisation, la gestion, la protection et l'utilisation durable des ressources génétiques de D. microcarpum dans cette zone. Matériel et méthodes. Une enquête a été menée, par interviews, sur la base de questionnaires ouverts dans 23 villages (216 personnes) appartenant aux zones agro-écologiques du plateau de Koutiala au sud du Mali. Résultats et discussion. L'enquête a confirmé que l'espèce joue un rôle important sur les plans socioculturel, médicinal, écologique et environnemental au sud du Mali. Les critères d'appréciation paysans des écotypes de D. microcarpum portent surtout sur la couleur de l'écorce, la taille des feuilles et la qualité des fruits. Selon les personnes interrogées, la perpétuation de D. microcarpum passe par la réglementation de la coupe de bois et le contrôle des feux. Conclusion. Les connaissances locales permettront d'élaborer une stratégie de conservation durable de D. microcarpum. Auparavant, certains aspects devront être élucidés.

Introduction. The respiration of living plant tissues and the diffusion of gases through the packaging material modify the atmosphere composition in the fresh product package. This modified atmosphere (MA) can be beneficial to the storage of fruit tissues, but, if the permeances of the films are not properly optimized, the MA may be inefficient or even detrimental. To define the optimal permeances (or permeability) for O2, CO2 and water vapor of the packaging film, the respiration rate of plant tissue must be measured as a function of temperature and atmosphere, and the O2 and CO2 concentrations that maximize shelf life must be determined. The best combination of packaging films, type and condition of fresh produce and storage temperature may be computed and verified experimentally. Materials andmethods. The work presents methods for measurement of the respiration rate of plant tissue, then the influence of temperature and the influence of O2 and CO2 contents are studied. This makes it possible to determine the optimal O2 and CO2 concentrations and the optimal gas transmission rates of packaging material. Lastly, experiments regarding the simulation of modified atmospheres are described. Conclusion. The methodology presented in our work provides helpful information to meet the need of optimal fruit and vegetable packaging.

Introduction. La salinité du sol et de l'eau d'irrigation, aggravée par la rareté des précipitations, est une menace permanente pour la culture des agrumes au Maroc. Le choix d'un porte-greffe tolérant à ce stress abiotique serait un moyen efficace pour pallier ce problème. L'expérimentation présentée a permis d'évaluer, vis-à-vis du stress salin, trois porte-greffes récemment introduits au Maroc. Matériel et méthodes. Des plants de citrange Carrizo et de deux hybrides, H1 et H2, issus du croisement Poncirus trifoliata × Citrus sunki Hort. ex Tan. ont été évalués pour leur tolérance à la salinité. Les plants âgés de 18 mois ont été irrigués par une solution nutritive additionnée de (25, 35, et 70) mM de NaCl durant un ou deux mois alors que les plants témoins recevaient la solution nutritive sans NaCl. Après traitement, les teneurs en proline et en sucres solubles ont été mesurées dans les feuilles des porte-greffes traités. Résultats. L'accumulation de proline a été indépendante de la présence de NaCl dans la solution d'irrigation mais elle a varié en fonction du porte-greffe. En revanche, NaCl a fortement stimulé l'accumulation des sucres solubles chez les trois porte-greffes et cette accumulation a été très importante chez le porte-greffe H1. Discussion et conclusions. Ces résultats concordent en partie avec certains des travaux déjà publiés. Dans nos conditions expérimentales, l'effet des concentrations salines utilisées a pu être compensé par l'accumulation de sucres solubles dans les feuilles, notamment dans celles du porte-greffe H1. Celui-ci ayant montré moins de toxicité foliaire que les deux autres porte-greffes, l'accumulation de sucres solubles dans la feuille d'agrumes pourrait être un indice de tolérance à la salinité.
