The object of this paper is to use this method to obtain some recurrence relations and series for MacRobert's E-functions.

In this paper two integrals involving E-functions are evaluated in terms of E-functions. The formulae to be established are:

If G and H are elementarily equivalent groups (that is, no elementary statement of group theory distinguishes between G and H) then the definable subgroups of G are elementarily equivalent to the corresponding ones of H. But G′ of G, consisting of all products of commutators [a, b] = a−1b−1ab of elements a and b of G, may not be definable. Must G′ and H′ be elementarily equivalent?

We study the spectral decomposition with respect to the Jacobi operator, J, of spherical immersions and characterize those with a simple decomposition in terms of the Finite Chen-type submanifolds. As a consequence, we give an application to the inverse problem for J.

In this note we formally solve the following triple integral equations,

where f1(x), f2(x) and f3(x) are integrable for 0<x<α, α<x<β and β<x<∞, respectively, and the function g(λ) is assumed to satisfy sufficient conditions for the Fourier sine transform to exist. A special case of this system arose in a problem concerned with transistors.

All the graphs considered in this paper are connected finite undirected graphs without loops and multiple edges.

By the vertex-neighbourhood (v-neighbourhood) of any vertex x in the graph G we mean the subgraph induced by the set of all vertices adjacent to x. Analogously by the edge-neighbourhood (e-neighbourhood) of any edge f with end vertices x, y we mean the subgraph (f) (or (xy)) induced by the set of all vertices which are adjacent to at least one vertex of the pair x, y and which are different from x, y.

In this note we give the proof of the following result (previously known for homotopically trivial and free actions on infranilmanifolds [3, Theorem 5.6]).

Theorem 1. Let G be a finite group acting freely and smoothly on a closed infranilmanifold M. Assume that dim M≠3, 4. Then the action of G is topologically conjugate to an affine action.

Linear spaces on which both an order and a topology are defined and related in various ways have been studied for some time now. Given an order on a linear space it is sometimes possible to define a useful topology using the order and linear structure. In this note we focus on a special type of space called a linear lattice and determine those lattice properties which are both necessary and sufficient for the existence of a classical norm, called an M-norm, for the lattice. This result is a small step in a program to determine which intrinsic order properties of an ordered linear space are necessary and sufficient for the existence of various given types of topologies for the space. This study parallels, in a certain sense, the study of purely topological spaces to determine intrinsic properties of a topology which make it metrizable and the study of the relation between order and topology on spaces which have no algebraic structure, or. algebraic structures other than a linear one.

Over the last few years, various extensions of the topological degree of a mapping have been made so as to include non-compact perturbations of the identity. One such extension, which employs compactness conditions, has been to the class of limit compact maps which were extensively studied by Sadovsky [7]. The class is a large one as it contains all compact mappings, contraction mappings and, more generally, condensing mappings. Sadovsky [7] gives a theory of degree for maps of the form I-f, where f is limit compact, and this was extended independently and with different methods by Petryshyn and Fitzpatrick [4] and the author [9] to allow f to be a multi-valued mapping. A refinement of the methods of [9] was given by Vanderbauwhede [8].

The object of this note is to construct a set of real three-dimensional Lie groups such that every real three-dimensional Lie group is locally isomorphic with some group in the set. The construction is effected by first finding canonical forms for the constants of structure of real three-dimensional Lie algebras; these canonical forms give rise to certain bilinear forms, and the Lie groups are obtained as linear groups isomorphic with groups of automorphisms which leave these bilinear forms invariant.

Quadratic forms associated with graphs were introduced over a century ago by Jordan [4]. We are concerned with the optimisation of such quadratic forms, following Motzkin and Straus [5], and we use the setting of categories and functors to express the nice interplay between the algebra and the graph theory. Applications to interchange graphs are also obtained.

In this paper, a problem of B. H. Neumann and Hanna Neumann [7] about the finite embeddability of an embeddable finite amalgam is discussed. After proving a “reduction theorem” for a finite amalgam to have a finite embedding, we examine some known embeddable amalgams (cf. [3]) as regards their embeddability in a finite group. Since the existence of the generalised free product and the embeddability of an amalgam are synonymous terms, Theorem 3.1 generalises a result in [4]. A sufficient condition for an amalgam of type S to have a finite embedding is also given.

In a recent paper [1], the theory of non-linear semi-special permutations has been developed. A method for describing such permutations, on a given range [n], is to be found in §§2, 3. This method consists in choosing a proper divisor s of n, determining all the semispecial permutations with principal number s, and then making stake all its possible values. In this way the totality of non-linear semi-special permutations on [n] may be obtained.

The purpose of the present note is to give some interesting and simple identities connected with basic hypergeometric series of the types 2Φ1 and 3Φ2.

Methods from fibrewise homology theory are illustrated by computations of cohomology rings of certain mapping spaces arising in the geometry of loop groups, specifically the spaces of maps from S^1 to the classifying space BSO(n) of SO(n) and maps from S{\hskip1}^2 to BSU(n).

In [3], two open problems were whether either of the diophantine equations

with n ∈ Z and f a prime number, is solvable if ω > 3 and 3 √ ω, but in this paper we allow f to be any (rational) integer and also 3 | ω. Equations of this form and more general ones can effectively be solved [5] with an advanced method based on analytical results, but the search limits are usually of enormous size. Here both equations (1) are norm equations in K (√–3): N(a + bp) = fw with p = (√–1 + –3)/2 which makes it possible to treat them arithmetically.

We show that continuous group homomorphisms between unitary groups of unital C*-algebras induce maps between spaces of continuous real-valued affine functions on the trace simplices. Under certain $K$-theoretic regularity conditions, these maps can be seen to commute with the pairing between $K_0$ and traces. If the homomorphism is contractive and sends the unit circle to the unit circle, the map between spaces of continuous real-valued affine functions can further be shown to be unital and positive (up to a minus sign).

The object of the present paper is to establish the equivalence of the well-known theorem of the double-six of lines in projective space of three dimensions and a certain theorem in Euclidean plane geometry. The latter theorem is of considerable interest in itself for two reasons. In the first place, it is a natural extension of Euler's classical theorem connecting the radii of the circumscribed and the inscribed (or the escribed) circles of a triangle with the distance between their centres. Secondly, it gives in a geometrical form the invariant relation between the circle circumscribed to a triangle and a conic inscribed in the triangle. For a statement of the theorem, see § 13 (4).

For a fixed integer e and prime p we construct the p-adic order bounded group valuations for a given abelian group G. These valuations give Hopf orders inside the group ring KG where K is an extension of with ramification index e. The orders are given explicitly when G is a p-group of order p or p 2. An example is given when G is not abelian.
