Let Q(X) denote and let BTr denote the classifying space of the r-torus. In [8], Segal showed that Q(BT1) is homotopy equivalent to a product BU × F where BU denotes the classifying space for stable complex vector bundles and F a space with finite homotopy groups. This result has been a very useful one. For example, in [5] it was used to show that up to a stable homotopy equivalence there is only one loop structure on the 3-sphere at each odd prime p. (The subsequent work of Dwyer, Miller, and Wilkerson shows this result is even true unstably, at every prime p.) In [6] it was used to classify, up to homology, the stable self maps of the projective spaces ℂPn and ℍPn. In [5] I asked if a splitting similar to Segal's might exist for Q(BTr) when r≥2. In particular, since the homotopy and homology groups of BU are torsion free it seemed natural to ask if Q(BTr), when r>, could likewise contain a retract with torsion free homology and homotopy groups and whose complement is rationally trivial. The purpose of this note is to show that the answer is no.

A proof is given here of a theorem of Sarason [9, Theorem 2], the proof being valid in an arbitrary (non-separable) complex Hilbert space. Sarason's proof uses a theorem and lemma of Wermer which may both fail when the separability hypothesis is omitted [3]. By using a special case of Sarason's theorem and another result of Sarason [10, Lemma 1] a simplified and shortened proof is given of a result of Scroggs [11, Corollary 1].

Recently we introduced the notion of an MS-algebra as a common abstraction of a de Morgan algebra and a Stone algebra [2]. Precisely, an MS-algebra is an algebra 〈L; ∧, ∨ ∘, 0, 1〉 of type 〈2, 2, 1, 0, 0〉 such that 〈L; ∧, ∨, 0, 1〉 is a distributive lattice with least element 0 and greatest element 1, and x → x∘ is a unary operation such that x ≤ x∘∘, (x ∧ y)∘ = x∘ ∨ y∘ and 1∘ = 0. It follows that ∘ is a dual endomorphism of L and that L∘∘ = {x∘∘ x ∊ L} is a subalgebra of L that is called the skeleton of L and that belongs to M, the class of de Morgan algebras. Clearly, theclass MS of MS-algebras is equational. All the subvarieties of MS were described in [3]. The lattice Λ (MS) of subvarieties of MS has 20 elements (see Fig. 1) and its non-trivial part (we exclude T, the class of one-element algebras) splits into the prime filter generated by M, that is [M, M1], the prime ideal generated by S, that is [B, S], and the interval [K, K2 ∨ K3].

Throughout this note all rings considered will be commutative and noetherian and will have non-zero identity elements. A will always denote such a ring and the category of all A-modules and all A-homomorphisms will be denoted by .

Let A be a complex Banach algebra with unit e of norm one. We show that A can be represented on a compact Hausdorff space ω which arises entirely out of the algebraic and norm structures of A. This space induces an order structure on A that is preserved by the representation. In the commutative case, ω is the spectrum of A, and we have a generalization of Gelfand's representation theorem for commutative complex Banach algebras with unit. Various aspects of this representation are illustrated by considering algebras of n × n complex matrices.

We describe two congruences α and γ contained in ℒ on an arbitrary orthodox semigroup. Let S be a right unipotent semigroup. We show that (i) α is an inverse semigroup congruence and γ is the finest fundamental inverse semigroup congruence on S, (ii) S is a union of groups if and only if ℒ on S and (iii) S is a band of groups if and only if ℒ on S.

In this note we formally solve the following dual integral equations:

where h is a constant and the Fourier cosine transform of u–1 φ(u) is assumed to exist. These dual equations arise in a crack problem in elasticity theory.

In [3] P. E. Conner showed that no abelian group with rank greater than 2 can act freely on Sn×Sn, the product of two spheres. G. Lewis [6] studied free actions of p-groups on Sn×Sn, when n is odd, n≢−l(p) and p is an odd prime. He showed that any p-group which has such an action must be abelian.

For a single space curve (that is, a smooth curve embedded in ℝ3) much geometrical information is contained in the dual and the focal set of the curve. These are both (singular) surfaces in ℝ3, the dual being a model of the set of all tangent planes to the curve, and the focal set being the locus of centres of spheres having at least 3-point contact with the curve. The local structures of the dual and the focal set are (for a generic curve) determined by viewing them as (respectively) the discriminant of a family derived from the height functions on the curve, and the bifurcation set of the family of distance-squared functions on the curve. For details of this see for example [6, pp. 123–8].

In [2], K. D. Magill, Jr. has proved that every automorphism of the semigroup (with respect to composition) of all real-valued differentiable functions of a real variable is inner. The purpose of this paper is to generalize this fact to arbitrary finite-dimensional real Banach spaces.

In this paper we give an algorithm for computing the 2-Selmer group of an elliptic curve

which has complexity O(LD(0·5),c1)), where D is the absolute discriminant of the curve. Our algorithm is unconditional but the complexity estimate assumes the GRH and a standard conjecture on the distribution of smooth reduced ideals. This improves on the corresponding algorithm of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer, which has complexity of O(√D).

Let G be a group. A precrossed G-module is a group homomorphism ∂: M → G together with a group action (g, m) ↦gm of G on M, such that ∂(gm) = g(∂m)g−1. The Peiffer commutator < m, m′ > of two elements m, m′ ∊ M is denned as

If all Peiffer commutators are trivial, the precrossed G-module is said to be a crossed G-module. The subgroup < M, M > generated by all Peiffer commutators is called the Peiffer subgroup of M; it is the second term of a lower Peiffer central series (see below). The following table indicates how these concepts reduce to more standard concepts when restrictions are placed on ∂ and G.

We generalize the notion of summable Szlenk index from a Banach space to an arbitrary weak*-compact set. We prove that a weak*-compact set has summable Szlenk index if and only if its weak*-closed, absolutely convex hull does. As a consequence, we offer a new, short proof of a result from Draga and Kochanek [J. Funct. Anal. 271 (2016), 642–671] regarding the behavior of summability of the Szlenk index under c0 direct sums. We also use this result to prove that the injective tensor product of two Banach spaces has summable Szlenk index if both spaces do, which answers a question from Draga and Kochanek [Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 145 (2017), 1685–1698]. As a final consequence of this result, we prove that a separable Banach space has summable Szlenk index if and only if it embeds into a Banach space with an asymptotic c0 finite dimensional decomposition, which generalizes a result from Odell et al. [Q. J. Math. 59, (2008), 85–122]. We also introduce an ideal norm $\mathfrak{s}$ on the class $\mathfrak{S}$ of operators with summable Szlenk index and prove that $(\mathfrak{S}, \mathfrak{s})$ is a Banach ideal. For 1 ⩽ p ⩽ ∞, we prove precise results regarding the summability of the Szlenk index of an ℓp direct sum of a collection of operators.

We introduce a generalization of the Lisca–Ozsváth–Stipsicz–Szabó Legendrian invariant ${\mathfrak L}$ to links in every rational homology sphere, using the collapsed version of link Floer homology. We represent a Legendrian link L in a contact 3-manifold ${(M,\xi)}$ with a diagram D, given by an open book decomposition of ${(M,\xi)}$ adapted to L, and we construct a chain complex ${cCFL^-(D)}$ with a special cycle in it denoted by ${\mathfrak L(D)}$ . Then, given two diagrams ${D_1}$ and ${D_2}$ which represent Legendrian isotopic links, we prove that there is a map between the corresponding chain complexes that induces an isomorphism in homology and sends ${\mathfrak L(D_1)}$ into ${\mathfrak L(D_2)}$ . Moreover, a connected sum formula is also proved and we use it to give some applications about non-loose Legendrian links; that are links such that the restriction of ${\xi}$ on their complement is tight.

If A is an algebra and ϑ is a congruence on A then A is said to be ϑ-coherent provided that, for every subalgebra B of A, if B contains some ϑ-class then B is a union of ϑ-classes. An algebra A is said to be congruence coherent if it is ϑ-coherent for every ϑ∈>ConA. This notion was investigated by Beazer [2] in the context of de Morgan algebras. Specifically, he showed that a de Morgan algebra is congruence coherent if and only if it is boolean, or simple, or the 4-element de Morgan chain. He also showed that if an algebra in the Berman class K1,1 of Ockham algebras is congruence coherent then it is necessarily a de Morgan algebra; and that a p-algebra is congruence coherent if and only if it is boolean. This notion has also been considered in the context of distributive double p-algebras by Adams, Atallah and Beazer [1] who showed that particular examples of congruence coherent double p-algebras are those that are congruence regular (in the sense that if two congruences have a class in common then they coincide). We prove that the module categories of Noether algebras (i.e., algebras module finite over a noetherian center) and affine noetherian PI algebras over a field enjoy the following product property: whenever a direct product \prod _(n \in ℕ) M_n of finitely generated indecomposable modules M_n is a direct sum of finitely generated objects, there are repeats among the isomorphism types of the M_n. The rings with this property satisfy the pure semisimplicity conjecture which stipulates that vanishing one-sided pure global dimension entails finite representation type.
