A. Mark and J. Paupert [Presentations for cusped arithmetic hyperbolic lattices, 2018, arXiv:1709.06691.] presented a method to compute a presentation for any cusped complex hyperbolic lattice. In this note, we will use their method to give a presentation for the Eisenstein-Picard modular group in three complex dimensions.

Let C be a finite dimensional algebra with B a split extension by a nilpotent bimodule E, and let M be a τC-rigid module with U its Bongartz τC-complement. If the induced module, M ⊗CB, is τB-rigid, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for U ⊗CB to be its Bongartz τB-complement. If M is τB-rigid, we again provide a necessary and sufficient condition for U ⊗CB to be its Bongartz τB-complement.

In this paper, we present some geometric characterizations of the Moufang quadrangles of mixed type, i.e., the Moufang quadrangles all the points and lines of which are regular. Roughly, we classify generalized quadrangles with enough (to be made precise) regular points and lines with the property that the dual nets associated to the regular points satisfy the Axiom of Veblen-Young, or a very weak version of the Axiom of Desargues. As an application we obtain a geometric characterization and axiomatization of the generalized inversive planes arising from the Suzuki-Tits ovoids related to a polarity in a mixed quadrangle. In the perfect case this gives rise to a characterization with one axiom less than in a previous result by the second author.

Let $\mu_p$ be the distribution of a random variable on the interval $[0,1)$, each digit of whose binary expansion is 0 or 1 with probability $p$ or $1\,{-}\,p$. Thus $\mu_p\,{=}\,\mathop{*}^{\infty}_{n{=}1} (p\delta_0+(1-p)\delta_{\frac1{2^n}})$. We show that for any Borel subsets $E$, $F$ of $[0,1)$ we have $$\l(E+F)\ge\mu_p(E)^\a\mu_q(F)^\b,$$ where $0\,{<}\,\a, \b\,{<}\,1$ with $\a\log a+\b\log b\,{=}\,\log 2$ and $a\,{=}\,[\max\{p, 1-p\}]^{-1}$, $b\,{=}\,[\max\{q, 1-q\}]^{-1}$. Here $\l=\mu_{1/2}$ denotes Lebesgue measure.

We study Lusternik–Schnirelmann type categories for isolated invariant sets by the use of the discrete Conley index.

A closer look at Laguerre and Meixner polynomials shows that they interact, with a more active role played by the latter. We intend here to expound on this development of the story up to some level of abstraction.

Suppose that G is a finite p-solvable group and let \chi \in {\rm Irr}(G) be of p^\prime -degree. In this note, we investigate when \chi remains irreducible when restricted to {\bf {N)}_{G}(P).

We prove that a semigroup generated by finitely many truncated convolution operators on Lp[0, 1] with 1 ≤ p < ∞ is non-supercyclic. On the other hand, there is a truncated convolution operator, which possesses irregular vectors.

The closure of a braid in a closed orientable surface Ʃ is a link in Ʃ × S1. We classify such closed surface braids up to isotopy and homeomorphism (with a small indeterminacy for isotopy of closed sphere braids), algebraically in terms of the surface braid group. We find that in positive genus, braids close to isotopic links if and only if they are conjugate, and close to homeomorphic links if and only if they are in the same orbit of the outer action of the mapping class group on the surface braid group modulo its centre.

We investigate real hypersurfaces in nonflat complex space forms attaining equality in an inequality involving the contact δ-invariant δc(2) introduced by Chen and Mihai in [3].

In this paper, we prove that if M^2 is a complete maximal spacelike surface of an anti-de Sitter space {\bf H}^{4}_{2}(c) with constant scalar curvature, then S=0, S={-10c\over 11}, S={-4c\over 3} or S=-2c, where S is the squared norm of the second fundamental form of M^{2}. Also

(1) S=0 if and only if M^2 is the totally geodesic surface {\bf H}^2(c);

(2) S={-4c\over 3} if and only if M^2 is the hyperbolic Veronese surface;

(3) S=-2c if and only if M^2 is the hyperbolic cylinder of the totally geodesic

surface {\bf H}^{3}_{1}(c) of {\bf H}^{4}_{2}(c).

For a locally compact group G, we study the distality of the action of automorphisms T of G on SubG, the compact space of closed subgroups of G endowed with the Chabauty topology. For a certain class of discrete groups G, we show that T acts distally on SubG if and only if Tn is the identity map for some $n\in\mathbb N$ . As an application, we get that for a T-invariant lattice Γ in a simply connected nilpotent Lie group G, T acts distally on SubG if and only if it acts distally on SubΓ. This also holds for any closed T-invariant co-compact subgroup Γ in G. For a lattice Γ in a simply connected solvable Lie group, we study conditions under which its automorphisms act distally on SubΓ. We construct an example highlighting the difference between the behaviour of automorphisms on a lattice in a solvable Lie group and that in a nilpotent Lie group. We also characterise automorphisms of a lattice Γ in a connected semisimple Lie group which act distally on SubΓ. For torsion-free compactly generated nilpotent (metrisable) groups G, we obtain the following characterisation: T acts distally on SubG if and only if T is contained in a compact subgroup of Aut(G). Using these results, we characterise the class of such groups G which act distally on SubG. We also show that any compactly generated distal group G is Lie projective.

Over fields of characteristic zero, there are well known constructions of the irreducible representations, due to A. Young, and of irreducible modules, called Specht modules, due to W. Specht, for the symmetric groups Sn which are based on elegant combinatorial concepts connected with Young tableaux etc. (see, e.g. [13]). James [12] extended these ideas to construct irreducible representations and modules over an arbitrary field. Al-Aamily, Morris and Peel [1] showed how this construction could be extended to cover the Weyl groups of type Bn. In [14] Morris described a possible extension of James' work for Weyl groups in general. Later, the present author and Morris [8] gave an alternative generalisation of James' work which is an extended improvement and extension of the original approach suggested by Morris. We now give a possible extension of James' work for finite reflection groups in general.

The lower radical of a module type. For a ring R with unit, the module type t(R) was defined in [6] as follows: t(0) = 0; t(R) = d if every free R-module has invariant rank; t(R) = (c, k) for integers c, k ≧ 1 if every free R-module of rank < c has invariant rank, while a free module of rank h ≧ c has rank h + nk for any integer n ≧ 0. The module types form a lattice under the ordering 0 < (c, k) < d and (c', k') ≦ (c, k) if and only if c ' ≦ c and k' Ⅰ k. Two of the basic theorems on types are:

A. [6; Theorem 2, p. 115] If R → R' is a unit-preserving homomorphism, then t(R')≦ t(R).

For regular semigroups, the appropriate analogue of the concept of a variety seems to be that of an e(xistence)-variety, developed by Hall [6,7,8]. A class V of regular semigroups is an e-variety if it is closed under taking direct products, regular subsemigroups and homomorphic images. For orthodox semigroups, this concept has been introduced under the term “bivariety” by Kaďourek and Szendrei [12]. Hall showed that the collection of all e-varieties of regular semigroups forms a complete lattice under inclusion. Further, he proved a Birkhoff-type theorem: each e-variety is determined by a set of identities. For e-varieties of orthodox semigroups a similar result has been proved by Kaďourek and Szendrei. At variance with the case of varieties, prima facie the free objects in general do not exist for e-varieties. For instance, there is no free regular or free orthodox semigroup. This seems to be true for most of the naturally appearing e-varieties (except for cases of e-varieties which coincide with varieties of unary semigroups such as the classes of all inverse and completely regular semigroups, respectively). This is true if the underlying concept of free objects is denned as usual. Kaďourek and Szendrei adopted the definition of a free object according to e-varieties of orthodox semigroups by taking into account generalized inverses in an appropriate way. They called such semigroups bifree objects. These semigroups satisfy the properties one intuitively expects from the “most general members” of a given class of semigroups. In particular, each semigroup in the given class is a homomorphic image of a bifree object, provided the bifree objects exist on sets of any cardinality. Concerning existence, Kaďourek and Szendrei were able to prove that in any class of orthodox semigroups which is closed under taking direct products and regular subsemigroups, all bifree objects exist and are unique up to isomorphism. Further, similar to the case of varieties, there is an order inverting bijection between the fully invariant congruences on the bifree orthodox semigroup on an infinite set and the e-varieties of orthodox semigroups. Recently, Y. T. Yeh [22] has shown that suitable analogues to free objects exist in an e-variety V of regular semigroups if and only if all members of V are either E-solid or locally inverse.

Let k be an algebraically closed field, and A a finite dimensional k-algebra, which we shall assume, without loss of generality, to be basic and connected. By module is meant throughout a finitely generated right A-module. Following Happel and Ringel [10], we shall say that a module Tλ is a tilting (respectively, cotilting) module if it satisfies the following three conditions:

Let R and S be arbitrary rings, RM and SN countably generated free modules, and let φ:End(RM)→End(sN) be an isomorphism between the endomorphism rings of M and N. Camillo [3] showed in 1984 that these assumptions imply that R and S are Morita equivalent rings. Indeed, as Bolla pointed out in [2], in this case the isomorphism φ must be induced by some Morita equivalence between R and S. The same holds true if one assumes that RM and SN are, more generally, non-finitely generated free modules.

Let Fg be a closed orientable surface of genus g > 1 and let be the Teichmuller space of Fg, i.e., the space of marked hyperbolic structures on Fg We shall also denote by the space of marked hyperbolic structures on Fgwith one distinguished point; by this, we mean a distinguished point on the universal cover gof Fg. This space is isomorphic to the space of marked complete hyperbolic structures on a genus g surface with 1 cusp which is the usual interpretation of . Choose a decomposition of Fginto pairs of pants by a collection of non–intersecting, totally geodesic simple closed curves. The Fenchel–Nielsen coordinates for relative to this decomposition are given by the lengths of the curves as well as twist parameters defined on each curve. Varying the length and twist parameters gives deformations of the marked hyperbolic structures.

Let K be a topological field. On introducing the vector-space topology on the n × n matrices over K, it becomes clear that the determinant map φ enjoys the following properties:

(A) φ is a continuous surjective homomorphism from GLn(K) to K*,

(B) φ(μa) = μn φ(a) for each non-zero φ in K, and all a in GLn(K).

For any nilpotent group B of class c and any given element h of B generating the subgroup H, Wiegold [1] has shown that if, in addition, [B, H] has exponent pr for some prime p and integer r, then B can be embedded in a nilpotent group G such that G also contains psth root for h(s ≧ 1). In fact, Wiegold has gone further and calculated an upper bound for the class of G in terms of the variables c, p, r, s.
