In a recent paper [1] we showed that there is a (1,) -correspondence between the homomorphisms of an inverse semigroup S and its normal subsemigroups. The normal subsemigroup of S corresponding to and determining the homomorphism μ of S is the inverse image under μ of the set of idempotents of Sμ and is called the kernel of the homomorphism μ. The inverse image of each idempotent of Sμ is itself an inverse semigroup [1], and each such inverse semigroup is said to be a component of the normal subsemigroup determined by μ.

Let D be the discriminant of an algebraic number field F of degree n over the rational field R. The problem of finding the lowest absolute value of D as F varies over all fields of degree n with a given number of real (and consequently of imaginary) conjugate fields has not yet been solved in general. The only precise results so far given are those for n = 2, 3 and 4. The case n = 2 is trivial; n = 3 was solved in 1896 by Furtwangler, and n = 4 in 1929 by J. Mayer [6]. Reference to Furtwangler's work is given hi Mayer's paper. In this paper the results for n = 5, that is, for quintic fields, are obtained.

The aim of thisnote is to unify a group of such formulae, relating to the case in which F(t) iS on the whole positive, and suitably continuous though not necessarily analytic.

The first discussion of the propagation of elastic waves in a thick plate was given by Lamb [1] for the two-dimensional problem of a harmonic wave travelling in a direction parallel to the medial plane of the plate. Lamb derived equations relating the thickness of the plate to the phase velocities of two types of wave, one symmetric with respect to the medial plane and the other antisymmetric. The symmetric modes of propagation introduced by Lamb have been studied by Holden [2] and the antisymmetric modes have been studied by Osborne and Hart [3]. More recently Pursey [4] has shown how the amplitude of the disturbance is related to a given distribution of stress, varying harmonically with time, applied to the free surfaces of the plate; two types of source are considered by Pursey, one producing a two-dimensional field of the Lamb type, and the other having circular symmetry about an axis normal to the surface of the plate.

The closed graph theorem is one of the deeper results in the theory of Banach spaces and one of the richest in its applications to functional analysis. This note contains an extension of the theorem to certain classes of topological vector spaces. For the most part, we use the terminology and notation of N. Bourbaki [1], contracting “locally convex topological vector space over the real or complex field” to “convex space”; here we confine ourselves to convex spaces.

In a recent paper [1], the theory of non-linear semi-special permutations has been developed. A method for describing such permutations, on a given range [n], is to be found in §§2, 3. This method consists in choosing a proper divisor s of n, determining all the semispecial permutations with principal number s, and then making stake all its possible values. In this way the totality of non-linear semi-special permutations on [n] may be obtained.

In this paper we evaluate a few infinite integrals involving products of Legendre functions. The results obtained herein are quite general and include, as particular cases, some known results.

The purpose of this paper is to prove a theorem which concerns the normal subgroup of a free product Π generated by a given subset Ω. This theorem was stated in the first paper of this series (Britton [1]) and an application was made to the word problem. The present work is, however, independent.

Airy's integrals

can be expressed ([1], [2]) in terms of Bessel functions. In this paper integrals of the types

are discussed. Various subsidiary formulae are given in § 2, some integrals of the type

are evaluated in § 3, and from these the integrals of the Airy type are derived in § 4.

Guided by an observation of Hausdorff ([4]; reproduced by Whittaker and Robinson [6, pp. 177–178]), I pointed out a long time ago [7] that his “Fourier“ treatment of certain products can be systematized so as to apply to an inclusive class of infinite convolutions. Recently I noticed [8] that an appropriate application of this method supplies the following curious result on gamma-quotients:

It is conceivable, though not plausible, that this law is equivalent to a law, or a set of laws, in only three variables, or even two. The present note shows that this is not the case.

The E-functions were defined by MacRobert [3] in 1937; they are denoted by E (p; αr: q; ps. z).

In an earlier paper [1] on groups which are the products of two finite cyclic groups with trivial intersection, certain permutations, called “semi-special”, played a certain role. The permutation π of the numbers 1, 2,…, n is semi-special if† πn=n, and if, for every y ε [n],

is again a permutation, namely a power (depending on y) of π.

Recently H.-E. Richert [10] introduced a new method of summability, for which he completely solved the “summability problem” for Dirichlet series, and which led also to an extension of our knowledge of the relations between the abscissae of ordinary and absolute Rieszian summability. This non-linear method, which may best be characterized by the notion “strong Rieszian summability” †, depends on three parameters, on the order k;, the type λ, and the index p;. While Richert's paper deals almost exclusively with the application of that method of summability in a specialized form (namely the case p = 2, λn=log n) to Dirichlet series, it is the object of the present paper, to consider the general theory of strong Rieszian summability.

This note is concerned with an inequality for even order positive definite hermitian matrices together with an application to vector spaces.

In integrating E-functions with respect to their parameters the contours are usually of the Barnes type, deformed if necessary to separate the increasing and decreasing sequences of poles of the integrands. The recurrence formulae for the Bessel, Legendre, hypergeometric and other such functions can all be related to each other by means of the E-functions. In this paper it will be shown how, starting from known recurrence formulae for the hypergeometric function, others can be derived. The E-function formulae are deduced in § 2, and the others in § 3.
