La Croix-Rouge américaine était organisée depuis peu de mois lorsqu'elle reçut le baptême du feu ; c'était en 1881; des incendies de forêts, qui faisaient rage dans l'Etat de Michigan, avaient détruit de nombreuses maisons. L'appel au secours que la jeune organisation entendit alors marqua pour elle le commencement d'une activité en temps de calamités dont l'histoire compte cinquante-cinq années.
