The Digital Archives of the International Review of the Red Cross reflect the complexity of a journal that was published concurrently in different versions and in different languages.
In order to present the archives logically they have been digitised in four sections, each with its own chronology and each with its own homepage on Cambridge Core.
To visit each archive please click on the following links.
A full explanation of each the archives and its unique chronology is available below.
International Review of the Red Cross 1919 – 2005 (IRC)
(Available via the current journal’s homepage)
Bulletin International des Societes de la Croix-Rouge 1869-1918 (BRC)
International Review of the Red Cross 1961-1997 (RCE)
Revista Internacional de la Cruz Roja 1976 – 1998 (RCS)
An explanation of the archives of the International Review of the Red Cross
Using the ISSN information, which gives separate ISSNs for separate journal titles, and the continuous volume numbering and titles on the actual copies scanned, the following structure was determined for what has been published on Core.
International Review of the Red Cross - Revue Internationale de la Croix-Rouge et Bulletin Internationale des Societe de la Croix-Rouge (IRC) ISSN 1026-8812, published between 1919 -1955, vols 1 - 37.6 succeeded by:
Revue Internationale de la Croix-Rouge ISSN 0035-3361, published between 1955 - 1998, vols 37.7 – 80 succeeded by:
Revue Internationale de la Croix-Rouge - International Review of the Red Cross ISSN 1560-7755, published between 1999 - 2004, vols 81 - 86 succeeded by:
International Review of the Red Cross ISSN 1816-3831, published from 2005 to date (current series).
Bulletin International des Societe de secours aux Militaires Blesses (BRC) ISSN 2023-5925, published between 1869 - 1885, vols 1 – 16 succeeded by:
Bulletin International des Societe de la Croix-Rouge ISSN 1816-9686, published between 1886 - 1918, vols 17 – 49 ceased publication in 1918.
International Review of the Red Cross (RCE) ISSN 0020-8604, (English translation of selected articles from Revue Internationale de la Croix-Rouge ISSN 0035-3361) published between 1961 - 1997, vols 1 – 37 ceased publication in 1998.
Revista Internacional de la Cruz Roja (RCS) (Spanish translation of selected articles from Revue Internationale de la Croix-Rouge ISSN 0035-3361) ISSN 0250-569X, published between 1976 - 1998, vols 1 – 23 ceased publication in 1998.
From the above descriptions you will see that we have grouped the titles according to their title history and more importantly, following the numbering of the volumes.
Thus, IRC (the current journal) has existed under four separate titles (and ISSNs), publishing an unbroken run of volumes from 1 (1919) to 92 (2010). The digital archive of IRC comprises volumes 1 - 87 (2005).
BRC existed under two titles and published a total of 49 volumes (1869 - 1918).
The additional two titles, RCE and RCS were translations of the (then) French-language title Revue Internationale de la Croix-Rouge (ISSN 0035-3361), and also contained unique articles in the language which were not translated from the main journal. These two journals had their own separate ISSNs and volume numbering, and both ceased publication in 1998, when the 'mother' title started publishing in both French and English, reflected in the joint-language title. This joint-language title became a single, English title International Review of the Red Cross in 2005, which it continues today.
The logic of the archives has been to pull together all of the different titles that were associated with continuous volume numbering. BRC, RCE and RCS are true historical archives because they are no longer extant. IRC represents the current title, and has its own historical archive appended.
