Ti6Al4V alloys usually need to undergo some kind of surface treatment to enable good bone growth and implant integration. In this work, three treatments that modify the titanium alloy surface were studied with the aim of promoting osteogenic differentiation of human-embryonic-stem-cell-derived mesenchymal progenitors (hESC-MPs). The surface treatments used were mechanical polishing and electropolishing for 4 or 12 min in an H2SO4/HF/glycerine solution. The samples were characterised by atomic force microscopy, profilometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and wettability. Samples were seeded with hESC-MPs in osteogenic media, and the cell number and alkaline phosphatase activity were measured. The electropolishing surface treatments influenced the nanometric morphology and wettability. However, the electropolished surfaces contributed in the same way as the mechanically polished surface to osteogenic differentiation, indicating that differentiation was strongly influenced by microroughness, which did not differ among the treatments used in the present work.

Magnetic core–shell nanoparticles (CSNs) have potential applications in spintronic devices, drug delivery systems, and magnetic random access memory. By use of our hydrothermal nano-phase epitaxy method, we have accomplished synthesis of novel, well-ordered α-Cr2O3@α-Mn0.35Cr1.65O2.94 inverted CSNs. XRD and TEM analyses show a core–shell structure with corundum phase throughout the core and shell with a minimal amount of interface defects. TEM-EDX and XPS data show Mn having the +2 oxidation state in the shell of the CSNs. Magnetization measurements at 5 K show a weak coercivity (H C) value of 8 Oe and an exchange bias field (H E) of 293 Oe. Ab initio calculations show that Mn incorporation in α-Cr2O3 results in narrowing of the energy band gap, substantiated by UV–Vis measurements, and half metallic behavior in case of Mn(III) substitution. Our calculations substantiate that Mn substitution in α-Cr2O3 results in a combination of antiferromagnetic and weak ferrimagnetic character of our CSNs.

Elastic strain is an effective and thus widely used parameter to control and modify the electrical, optical, and magnetic properties of crystalline solid-state materials. It has a large impact on device performance and enables adjusting the materials functionality. Here, we promote a micromechanical strain enhancement technology to achieve ultra-high strain in semiconductors. The here presented suspended membranes enable the accurate control of the strain on a wafer-scale by standard top-down fabrication methods making it attractive for both device applications and also, thanks to the simplicity of the method, for fundamental research. This review aims at discussing the process of strain enhancement and its usage as an investigation platform for strain-related physical properties. Furthermore, we present design rules and a detailed analysis of fracture effects limiting the strain enhancement.

The Cu–S compounds have been reported as promising thermoelectric materials with abundant element composition, low price, and low toxicity. In this work, Sn x Cu1.8−x S samples with different Sn contents (x = 0.005, 0.01, 0.03, and 0.05) were fabricated by mechanical alloying combined with spark plasma sintering. The phase structure and microstructure of all the bulk samples were checked by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy respectively. The thermoelectric transport properties, such as electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, carrier concentration, carrier mobility, and thermal conductivity, were measured. The effect of second phase introduced by Sn addition on the thermoelectric properties of Cu–S system was investigated. The thermoelectric properties of samples were improved by the precipitations of two different second phases (Cu2SnS3 and Cu4SnS4). The second phase species depend on the Sn contents. Finally, the Sn0.01Cu1.79S bulk sample obtained the highest ZT value of 0.81 at 773 K, which is 1.6-fold higher than that of the pristine Cu1.8S sample due to the significantly reduced thermal conductivity by second phase and nanopores scattering.

Titanium–tantalum based alloys can demonstrate a martensitic transformation well above 100 °C, which makes them attractive for shape memory applications at elevated temperatures. In addition, they provide for good workability and contain only reasonably priced constituents. The current study presents results from functional fatigue experiments on a binary Ti–25Ta high-temperature shape memory alloy. This material shows a martensitic transformation at about 350 °C along with a transformation strain of 2 pct at a bias stress of 100 MPa. The success of most of the envisaged applications will, however, hinge on the microstructural stability under thermomechanical loading. Thus, light and electron optical microscopy as well X-ray diffraction were used to uncover the mechanisms that dominate functional degradation in different temperature regimes. It is demonstrated the maximum test temperature is the key parameter that governs functional degradation in the thermomechanical fatigue tests. Specifically, ω-phase formation and local decomposition in Ti-rich and Ta-rich areas dominate when T max does not exceed ≈430 °C. As T max is increased, the detrimental phases start to dissolve and functional fatigue can be suppressed. However, when T max reaches ≈620 °C, structural fatigue sets in, and fatigue life is again deteriorated by oxygen-induced crack formation.

This article features the recent developments in fluorographene (FG) and its other functional forms such as fluorographene oxide—their synthesis, fluorination, defluorination, and applications. FG is identified as an important functional derivative of graphene, and FG’s multifunctionalities make it as an ideal candidate for diverse fields, say from photovoltaic to bio-medical diagnosis, imaging, sensing, and therapy. Here the possibilities of FG as a biomedical sensing platform is discussed in detail and the potentials of FG based electrochemical and conductometric sensing platforms are unraveled. The importance of fluorine control as well as the other key factors need to be considered while choosing FG based bio-sensing platforms are also discussed.

Texture-engineered ceramics enable access to a vast array of novel texture-property relations leading to property values ranging between those of single crystals and isotropic bulk ceramics. Recently developed templated grain growth and magnetic alignment texturing methods yield high quality crystallographic texture, and thus significant advances in achievable texture-engineered properties in magnetic, piezoelectric, electronic, optical, thermoelectric, and structural ceramics. In this paper, we outline the fundamental basis for these texture-engineered properties and review recent contributions to the field of texture-engineered ceramics with an update on the properties of textured lead-free and lead-based piezoelectrics. We propose that further property improvements can be realized through development of processes that improve crystallographic alignment of the grain structure, create biaxial texture, and explore a wider array of crystallographic orientations. There is a critical need to model the physics of texture-engineered ceramics, and more comprehensively characterize texture, thus enabling testing of texture orientation-property relations and materials performance. We believe that in situ measurements of texture evolution can lead to a more fundamental and comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms of texture development.

This paper presents the high temperature yield and fatigue strength as well as thermophysical properties of two polycrystalline wrought γ/γ′ Co-base superalloys developed for application in a temperature regime above 700 °C. The alloys CoWAlloy1 (Co42Ni32Cr12Al6W3Ti2.5Ta1.5 + Si,C,B,Zr,Hf) and CoWAlloy2 (Co41Ni32Cr12Al9W5 + Ti,Ta,Si,C,B,Zr,Hf) exhibited solidus temperatures of 1070 °C and 1030 °C, respectively, and a γ′ fraction of about 50%. CoWAlloy2 displayed a rather high Young’s modulus of 250 GPa. The two Co-base superalloys showed a good high temperature strength exceeding Ni-base disc alloys U720Li and Waspaloy at temperatures above 800 °C. When comparing the yield strength from tensile and compression tests, no asymmetry could be found. The low-cycle fatigue life of CoWAlloy2 at a total strain amplitude of 0.5% is similar to that of U720Li and Waspaloy (about 370 cycles, R = −1). During long-term aging for 1024 h at 750 °C, no additional phases were formed and the room temperature hardness barely changed.

Understanding film initiation and growth mechanisms at the atomic level is crucial to obtain high-quality nonpolar ZnO films. Using the advanced reactive force field-based molecular dynamics method, we theoretically studied the effect of substrate temperature (350–950 K) on the quality, layer develop mechanism and defect formation of ZnO films. Investigation of the energy, radial distribution function, layer coverage, sputtering and injecting phenomena indicated that the present films grown at 500–600 K possessed the optimal quality. Further investigation of the growth condition, instant film profiles, interfacial microstructure evolutions and layered snapshots revealed that, addition of atoms on newly formed localized films can induce some partially bonded or extruded atoms out of the film plane. Further adherence of depositing atoms to these unstable or extruded atoms induces the initiation and growth of a new layer.

Several recent X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy works have reported an anomalous atomic dynamics in hyperquenched metallic glasses. Here, we compare and contrast these microscopic dynamics with that found in a Zr44Ti11Ni10Cu10Be25 bulk metallic glass, prepared with a cooling rate some 6 orders of magnitude lower. In both cases, structural relaxation in the glass is governed by internal stresses, giving rise to highly compressed density correlation functions. Differently from the fast aging reported in previous studies, here the atomic dynamics displays a slow linear atomic-level aging, while not affecting the shape parameter. Traditional macroscopic phenomenological models fail to capture the temperature dependence of the microscopic structural relaxation time, suggesting a length scale dependence of the aging. Interestingly, the dynamics does not seem to be affected by the presence of a low percentage of frozen nanocrystals and displays a temperature dependence similar to that observed in macroscopic viscosity measurements.

The traditional macro-scale form of dynamic indentation measures the dynamic deformation behavior of a material by simulating impact conditions. Similarly, the nano-impact indentation technique, with small-scale contacts and high spatial resolutions, is a novel technique for obtaining mechanical properties of materials at dynamic strain rates (>102 s−1). Nano-impact hardness values display a decreasing trend or size effect that continues for several micrometers of indentation depth, compared to the primarily sub micrometer depth range of size effect in quasi-static nanoindentations. For the first time, the factors behind the enhanced size effects for dynamic micro-scale indentations have been investigated by the current work: non-uniform loading and resulting instability using strain rate profiles, plastic wave behavior during loading using resistance force versus indentation depth profiles, quantification of energy of the dynamic plastic wave, and localization of impact strain using electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) mapping of the strain affected vicinity of indentation imprints.

This work reports an investigation of electron transport in monoclinic β-Ga2O3 based on a combination of density functional perturbation theory based-lattice dynamical computations, coupling calculation of lattice modes with collective plasmon oscillations, and Boltzmann theory-based transport calculations. The strong entanglement of the plasmon with the different longitudinal optical (LO) modes makes the role LO-plasmon coupling crucial for transport. The electron density dependence of the electron mobility in β-Ga2O3 is studied in the bulk material form and also in the form of a two-dimensional electron gas. Under high electron density, a bulk mobility of 182 cm2/V s is predicted, while in the 2DEG form, the corresponding mobility is about 418 cm2/V s when remote impurities are present at the interface and improves further as the remote impurity center moves away from the interface. The trend of the electron mobility shows promise for realizing high-electron mobility in dopant-isolated electron channels. The experimentally observed small anisotropy in mobility is traced through a transient Monte Carlo simulation. It is found that the anisotropy of the IR-active phonon modes is responsible for giving rise to the anisotropy in low-field electron mobility.

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) of vanadium oxide (VOx ) thin films, using tetrakis(dimethylamino)vanadium as the vanadium precursor, is comprehensively reported in this work. The vanadium precursor is highly volatile and can be used at room temperature for deposition. Either H2O or O3 can be used as the coreactant for depositing VOx at 50–200 °C. However, partial precursor decomposition is suggested for the deposition temperature higher than 160 °C. The as-deposited VOx films are pure, smooth, and amorphous, and can be crystallized into monoclinic VO2 phase by postdeposition annealing under N2 ambient. The minimum annealing temperature for film to crystallize is found, by in situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction experiments, at around 550–600 °C. In situ quartz crystal microbalance experiments are performed to further analyze the surface reaction mechanism involved in this ALD process.

In this work, nano, micro, and macro-indentation tests under standard or multicycle loading conditions were performed for studying the mechanical behavior of a crown borosilicate glass sample with the objective to study the scale effect in indentation and the influence of cracks formation on the assessment of mechanical properties. When no cracks were initiated during the indenter penetration, especially for low indentation loads, the mechanical properties were deduced by applying different methodologies, (i) Standard (or monocyclic) loading, (ii) Continuous Stiffness Measurement mode, (iii) Constant and progressive multicycle loading, and (iv) Dynamic hardness computation. It has been found independently of the loading conditions, Martens hardness and elastic modulus are approximately 3.3 and 70 GPa, respectively. However, when cracking and chipping are produced during the indentation test, two damage parameters related to hardness and elastic modulus can be used for representing the decrease of the mechanical properties as a function of the relative penetration depth.

A modification of the metal processing technique known as equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) to incorporate shear plane rotation, called ECAP-R, is presented. The new process was developed to produce hybrid materials with helical architecture of their constituents, which holds promise to enable enhanced mechanical properties. The process was trialled experimentally using a specially designed laboratory-scale rig. It was shown that a positive mean stress (negative hydrostatic pressure) in a part of the multipiece billet leads to separation of the constituents within that region. A way to improving the process design was suggested based on finite element simulations. It was demonstrated that the proposed processing results in excellent bonding between the helical parts of the hybrid in the regions of positive hydrostatic pressure. Subsequent annealing gave rise to further improvement of the quality of bonding. Processing by ECAP-R at elevated temperatures was suggested as a viable method of producing hybrid materials with helical architecture.

With increasing output of petroleum coke, the value-added exploitation of petroleum coke has become a tough problem. Preparing porous carbons is a traditional way to the value-added exploitation of petroleum coke. Here, we used a facile and efficient hard-templating strategy to synthesize mesoporous carbon with high surface area from petroleum coke. N2 adsorption analyses show that the BET specific area and pore volume of the carbons can reach up to 864 m2/g and 1.37 cm3/g, respectively. To utilize the abundant mesopores of the carbons, anthraquinone-modified mesoporous carbon was tested as an electrode material for supercapacitor applications. Electrochemical measurements demonstrated that the specific capacitance reached up to 366 F/g at the current density of 1 A/g, indicating a promising prospect of using this carbon in electrochemical energy-storage field. More importantly, the strategy used in this work can be easily modified to prepare other nano-carbon materials from petroleum coke.

Magnesium alloy has great potential for bone implantation. However, its corrosion rate is fast in physiological environment. In this paper, biological Mg–Zn–Ca alloy was processed by high pressure torsion (HPT) and subsequently annealed at 90–270 °C for 30 min. The microstructure and corrosion resistance in simulated body fluid were investigated. The results revealed that with the rise of the annealing temperature, the grain size of the HPT alloy gradually increased and the relative diffraction peak intensity of (0002) grain orientation decreased. The amount of second phases increased first and then decreased, while the surface stress decreased first and then increased. All of these changes affected the corrosion rate simultaneously. The corrosion resistance of the HPT alloy increased first and then decreased with the rise of annealing temperature. After annealing at 210 °C for 30 min, the corrosion resistance was the best. Therefore, it was feasible to control the corrosion rate via annealing treatment.

Graphene has emerged as a champion material for a variety of applications cutting across multiple disciplines in science and engineering. Graphene and its derivatives have displayed huge potential as a biosensing material due to their unique physicochemical properties, good electrical conductivity, optical properties, biocompatibility, ease of functionalization, and flexibility. Their widespread use in making biosensors has opened up new possibilities for early diagnosis of life-threatening diseases and real-time health monitoring. Following an introduction and discussion on the significance of fabrication protocols and assembly, this review is intended to assess why graphene is suitable to build better biosensors, the working of existing biosensing schemes and their current status toward commercialization for wearable diagnostic and prognostic devices. We believe this review will provide a critical insight for harnessing graphene as a suitable biosensor for the clinical diagnostics, its future prospects and challenges ahead.

In this study, TiO2 photoanodes doped with samarium ions via a method of hydrothermal treatment were used to fabricate dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Different doping concentrations were investigated on the effects of the cell’s performance. Some techniques including XRD, scanning electron microscopy, HRTEM, XPS, UV-Vis, photoluminescence were used to characterize the morphology, structure, and optic properties of the prepared photoanodes. The photovoltaic performance of the fabricated cells was further evaluated by measuring the current density–voltage (J–V) curves. It was found that: (1) The down-conversion luminescence effect derived from samarium doping could enhance the light-harvesting ability. (2) Compared with the undoped sample, the samarium-doped cells exhibited enhanced photovoltaic performance. Among the cells with different doping concentrations, the cell TiO2:0.015 Sm showed the best power conversion efficiency of 6.08% with a high open-circuit voltage (V oc) and a short-circuit current density (J sc).
