It is known [Herman Weyl, 1910] that every linear second-order differential expression L (with real coefficients) is such that Ly = λy (im λ ≠ 0) has at least one solution belonging to the class L2 = L2[0, ∞) of functions, the squares of whose moduli are Lebesgue-integrable on [0, ∞). This celebrated result was later proved by E. C. Titchmarsh (1940–1944), using sophisticated analysis of bilinear transformation. The aim of the present note is to prove the same result once again, but using only elementary analysis and school geometry. The power of this method will be appreciated further when one realises the amount of simplifications that can be acheived by this expressions. This part of the note course will be taken up in a subsequent paper.

Countable homogeneous models are ‘simple’ objects from a model theoretic point of view. From a recursion theoretic point of view they can be complex. For instance the elementary theory of such a model might be undecidable, or the set of complete types might be recursively complex. Unfortunately even if neither of these conditions holds, such a model still can be undecidable. This paper investigates countable homogeneous models with respect to a weaker notion of decidability called almost decidable. It is shown that for theories that have only countably many type spectra, any countable homogeneous model of such a theory that has a Σ2 type spectrum is almost decidable.

Let u be a solution of a parabolic equation ut = F(u, Du, D2u). Under convenient hypotheses it is proved that the angle between a given direction and the normal to the level surfaces of u(·,t) satisfies a maximum principle.

In this note we present a general Jordan-Hölder type theorem for modular lattices and apply it to obtain various (old and new) versions of the Jordan-Hölder Theorem for finite groups.

We consider the lattice of pseudovarieties contained in a given pseudovariety P. It is shown that if the lattice L of subpseudovarieties of P has finite height, then L is isomorphic to the lattice of subvarieties of a locally finite variety. Thus not every finite lattice is isomorphic to a lattice of subpseudovarieties. Moreover, the lattice of subpseudovarieties of P satisfies every positive universal sentence holding in all lattice of subvarieties of varieties V(A) ganarated by algebras A ε P.

A Σ-group is an abelian group on which is given a family of infinite sums having properties suggested by, but weaker than, those which hold for absolutely convergent series of real or complex numbers. Two closely related questions are considered. The first concerns the construction of a Σ-group from an arbitrary abelian group on which certain series are given to be summable, certain of these series being required to sum to zero. This leads to a Σ-theoretic construction of R from Q and in general of the completion of an arbitrary metrizable abelian group (with the associated unconditional sums) from that group. The second question is whether, in a given Σ-group, the values of the infinite sums may be determined solely from a knowledge of which series are summable. Such a Σ-group is said to be relatively free and it is shown that all metrizable abelian groups are relatively free.

In this paper we continue our investigations of a construction method for subnear-rings of M(G) proposed by H. Wielandt. For a meromorphic product H, H ⊂ Gk, G finite, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for M(G, k, H) to be a near-field.

In order to classify solvable groups Philip Hall introduced in 1939 the concept of isoclinism. Subsequently he defined a more general notion called isologism. This is so to speak isoclinism with respect to a certain variety of groups. The equivalence relation isologism partitions the class of all groups into families. The present paper is concerned with the internal structure of these families.

Let L be a linear differential operator with rational coefficients such that 0 is not an irregular singularity of L and that for sufficiently many p's the equation Lv = 0 has no zero solution mod p. We show that if u is a formal power series whose coefficients are p-adic integers for almost all p and if Lu is rational, then u too is rational.

Let α and β be *-automorphisms of a C*-algebra A such that α + α β + β-1. There exist invariant ideals I1I2 and I3 of A, with II ∩ I2 ∩ I3 = {O}, containing, respectively, the range ofβ − α, the range of β − α-1, and the union of the ranges of β2 − α2 and β2 − α-2. The induced actions on the quotient algebras give a decomposition of the system (A, α, β) into systems where β = α, β = α-2 and α2 = α-2.

If α and β are one-parameter groups of *-automorphisms such that α + α-1 = β + β−1, then the corresponding result is valid, and may be strengthened to assert that I1 ∩ I2 = {0}.

These results are analogues and extensions of similar results of A. B. Thaheem et al. for von Neumann algebras and commuting automorphisms.

In this paper we prove theorems on the existence of integrable and monotonic solutions of Hammserstein and Urysohn integral equations. The basic tool used in the proof is the fixed point principle for contractions with respect to the so-called measure of weak noncompactness.

The purpose of this paper is to prove (1) if q ≡ 1 (mod 8) is a prime power and there exists a Hadamard matrix of order (q − 1)/2, then we can construct a Hadamard matrix of order 4q, (2) if q ≡ 5 (mod 8) is a prime power and there exists a skew-Hadamard matrix of order (q + 3)/2, then we can construct a Hadamard matrix of order 4(q + 2), (3) if q ≡ 1 (mod 8) is a prime power and there exists a symmetric C-matrix of order (q + 3)/2, then we can construct a Hadamard matrix of order 4(q + 2).

We have 36, 36 and 8 new orders 4n for n ≤ 10000, of Hadamard matrices from the first, the second and third theorem respectively, which were known to the list of Geramita and Seberry. We prove these theorems by using an adaptation of generalized quaternion type array and relative Gauss sums.

A trigonometric series has “small gaps” if the difference of the orders of successive terms is bounded below by a number exceeding one. Wiener, Ingham and others have shown that if a function represented by such a series exhibits a certain behavior on a large enough subinterval I, this will have consequences for the behavior of the function on the whole circle group. Here we show that the assumption that f is in any one of various classes of functions of generalized bounded variation on I implies that the appropriate order condition holds for the magnitude of the Fourier coefficients. A generalized bounded variation condition coupled with a Zygmundtype condition on the modulus of continuity of the restriction of the function to I implies absolute convergence of the Fourier series.

An infinite class of T-matrices is constructed using Golay sequences. A list is given with new Hadamard matrices of order 2t. q, q odd, q < 10000, improving the known values of t.

Finally T-matrices are given of order 2m + 1, for small values of m ≤ 12 which do not coincide with those generated by Turyn sequences.

We consider continuous Gaussian stochastic process indexed by a compact subset of a vector space over a local field. Under suitable conditions we obtain an asymptotic expression for the probability that such a process will exceed a high level. An important component in the proof of these results is a theorem of independent interest concerning the amount of ‘time’ which the process spends at high levels.

Given two C1 -functions g: R → R, u: [0,1] → R such that u(0) = u(1) = 0, g(0) = 0, we prove that there exists c, with 0 < c < 1, such that u′(c) = g(u(c)). This result implies the classical Rolle's Theorem when g ≡ 0. Next we apply our result to prove the existence of solutions of the Dirichlet problem for the equation x′ = f(t, x, x′).

Let W+ denote the Banach algebra of all absolutely convergent Taylor series in the open unit disc. We characterize the finitely generated closed and prime ideals in W+. Finally, we solve a problem of Rubel and McVoy by showing that W+ is not coherent.

Probabilistic quasi-metric spaces are introduced and used to define ordered probabilistic metric spaces. The latter spaces arise naturally in the study of probability and statistics; they closely resemble the uniform ordered spaces of L. Nachbin. A procedure is described for constructing ordered probabilistic metric spaces from quasi-simple spaces, and a completions theory is developed simultaneously for probabilistic quasi-metric spaces and ordered probabilistic metric spaces.

A Borel measure μ on a compact group G is called Lp-improving if the operator Tμ: L2(G) → L2(G), defined by Tμ(f) = μ * f, maps into Lp(G) for some P > 2. We characterize Lp-improving measures on compact non-abelian groups by the eigenspaces of the operator Tμ if |Tμ|. This result is a generalization of our recent characterization of Lp-improving measures on compact abelian groups.

Two examples of Riesz product-like measures are constructed. In contrast with the abelian case one of these is not Lp-improving, while the other is a non-trivial example of an Lp improving measure.

A linear vector maximum problem with nonlinear constraints is considered. A condition is derived which is necessary for an efficient solution and sufficient for a properly efficient solution of this problem. This leads to sufficient conditions for an efficient solution to be properly efficient. An example is discussed at the end.
