In this paper the structure of rings with dual continuous right ideals is discussed. The main result is the following: If R is a ring with (Jacobson) radical nil, and all of its finitely generated right ideals are dual continuous, then where S is a finite direct sum of local rings each of which has its radical square zero, or is a right valuation ring, T is semiprimary right semihereditary ring, and M is an (S, T)-bimodule such that all of its finitely generated T-submodules are projective. A partial converse of this result is obtained: any matrix ring of the above type with M = 0 has all of its finitely generated right ideals dual continuous.

A topological space X is said to be weakly-Lindelöf if and only if every open cover of X has a countable sub-family with dense union. We know that products of two Lindelöf spaces need not be weakly-Lindelöf. In this paper we obtain non-trivial sufficient conditions on small sub-products to ensure the producitivity of the property weakly-Lindelöf with respect to arbitrary products.

The simple twills on n harnesses can be classified according to the number of breaks that they possess. An algorithm is detailed for determining these twills and some sample listings given. A formula is derived which evaluates the total number of n-harness twills with a specified number of breaks, and hence also the total possible number of twills on n harnesses. Also the balanced twills on n harnesses are enumerated.

We give an explicit one step description of the free (Barr) exact category on a left exact one. As an application we give a new two step construction of the free abelian category on an additive one.

We consider two person, zero sum games with several symmetries. Where such symmetries are present there is a group acting on the strategies of the game. We show how to use this action to produce a reduced game with a smaller matrix, but having the same value as the original game, and how to obtain optimal strategies for the original game from optimal strategies of the reduced game. An analysis of a simplified version of the popular game Mastermind is given to illustrate the theory developed.

Let N be a complete connected Riemannian manifold with sectional curvatures bounded from below. Let M be a complete simply connected Riemannian manifold with sectional curvatures KM(σ)≤ −a2 (a ≥ 0) and with dimension < 2 dim N. Suppose that N is isometrically immersed in M and that its image lies in a closed ball of radius ρ. Then sup(KN(σ) − KM(σ)) ≥ μ2(aρ)/ρ2 where the function μ is defined by μ(x) = x coth x for x > 0, μ(0) = 1 and the supremum is taken over all sections tangent to N.

Special numerical formulae for the dilogarithm of powers of a base quantity have been shown to exist by Watson, Coxeter and others. Abel's equation for the dilogarithm was put in this “exponent” form, as a result of which a four-variable, symmetrical equation, also in exponent form, was deduced. From these equations a large number of special numerical results were produced, from which certain properties of a general structural nature emerged, and enabled two new results to be predicted.

The algebraic bases for these results can be grouped in trigonometric or non-trigonometric form, and for the former it seems to be necessary to examine the properties of the dilogarithm in the complex plane. Even so, there are some identities that seem to be outside the scope of the present methods.

It is speculated that certain factorization relations, which can be identified from the equations, may play a substantial role in the results; but so far no analytic derivation of this property has appeared possible.

A Latin square is considered to be a set of n2 cells with three block systems. An automorphisni is a permutation of the cells which preserves each block system. The automorphism group of a Latin Square necessarily has at least 4 orbits on unordered pairs of cells if n < 2. It is shown that there are exactly 4 orbits if and only if the square is the composition table of an elementary abelian 2-group or the cclic group of order 3.

If G is the unitary group U(V) or the symplectic group Sp(V) of a vector space V over a finite field of characteristic p, and r is a positive integer, we determine the abelian p-subgroups of largest order in G whose fixed subspaces in V have dimension at least r, with the restriction that we assume p ≠ 2 in the symplectic case. In particular, we determine the abelian subgroups of largest order in a Sylow p-subgroup of G. Our results complement earlier work on general linear and orthogonal groups.

New amicable orthogonal designs of order eight are given and they are used to construct ne orthogonal designs of order 32.

It is well known that in a commutative Noetherian ring with identity every ideal has a representation as a finite intersection of primary ideals. The object of the present paper is to generalize this result to a class of near-rings called Q-near-rings which includes rings with dense quasi-centre and consequently all commutative rings.

Let t be any complex number different from the poles of a Weierstrass elliptic function ℘(z), having algebraic invariants. Then we estimate from below the sum where α and β are algebraic numbers. The estimate is given in terms of the heights of α and β and the degree of the field Q(α, β), where Q is the field of rationals.

If Sp(V) is the symplectic group of a vector space V over a finite field of characteristic p, and r is a positive integer, the abelian p-subgroups of largest order in Sp(V) whose fixed subspaces in V have dimension at least r were determined in the preceding paper, in the case p ≠ 2. Here we deal with the case p = 2. Our results also complete earlier work on the orthogonal groups.

In this paper we study commutative topological semigroups S admitting an absolutely continuous measure. When S is cancellative we show that S admits a weaker topology J with respect to which (S, J) is embeddable as a subsemigroup with non-empty interior in some locally compact topological group. As a consequence, we deduce certain results related to the existence of invariant measures on S and for a large class of locally compact topological semigroups S, we associate S with some useful topological subsemigroup of a locally compact group.

A directed packing of pairs into quadruples is a collection of 4-subsets of a set of cardinality ν with the property that each ordered pair of elements appears at most once in a 4-subset (or block). The maximal number of blocks with this property is denoted by DD(2, 4, ν). Such a directed packing may also be thought of as a packing of transtivie tournaments into the complete directed graph on ν points. It is shown that, for all but a finite number of values of ν, DD(2, 4, ν) is maximal.

A Boolean-like ring R is a commutative ring with unity in which 2x = 0 and xy(1 + x)(1 + y) = 0 hold for all elements x, y of the ring R. It is shown in this paper that in the category of Boolean-like rings, R is injective if and only if R is a complete Boolean ring and R is projective if and only if R = {0, 1}.

Let G be a cyclic group of prime order p and K a field of characteristic p. The set of classes of isomorphic indecomposable (K, G)-modules forms a basis over the complex field for an algebra p (Green, 1962) with addition and multiplication being derived from direct sum and tensor product operations.

Algebras n with similar properties can be defined for all n ≥ 2. Each such algebra is isomorphic to a matrix algebra Mn of n × n matrices with complex entries and standard operations. The characters of elements of n are the eigenvalues of the corresponding matrices in Mn.

Olson and Jenkins defined E(M) to be the class of all rings each nonzero homomorphic image of which contains either a nonzero M-ideal or an essential ideal where M, is any class of rings. E(M) was proven to be a radical class and various classes M were considered. Here the class E(M) is partitioned into two classes: H the class of all rings each nonzero homomorphic image of which has a proper essential ideal and the class H(M) of all rings each nonzero homomorphic image of which contains an M-ideal. It is shown that H is a radical class and under certain conditions H(M) is also a radical class. Various properties placed on M yield several well-known radical classes and an infinite number of supernilpotent nonspecial radical classes is constructed.

Let G be a compact, simple, simply connected Lie group. The Lp-norm of a central trigonometric polynomial reduces naturally to a weighted Lp-norm of a trigonometric polynomial on a maximal torus T. The weight is | Δ |2-p, where Δ is the usual Weyl function. If p ≥ 2, we prove that | Δ |2-p satisfies Muckenhoupt's Ap condition if and only if the Lp-norms of the irreducible characters of G are uniformly bounded.
