We consider the problem of defining an action of Hecke operators on the coherent cohomology of certain integral models of Shimura varieties. We formulate a general conjecture describing which Hecke operators should act integrally and solve the conjecture in certain cases. As a consequence, we obtain p-adic estimates of Satake parameters of certain nonregular self-dual automorphic representations of $\mathrm {GL}_n$ .

We define a motivic conductor for any presheaf with transfers F using the categorical framework developed for the theory of motives with modulus by Kahn, Miyazaki, Saito and Yamazaki. If F is a reciprocity sheaf, this conductor yields an increasing and exhaustive filtration on $F(L)$ , where L is any henselian discrete valuation field of geometric type over the perfect ground field. We show that if F is a smooth group scheme, then the motivic conductor extends the Rosenlicht–Serre conductor; if F assigns to X the group of finite characters on the abelianised étale fundamental group of X, then the motivic conductor agrees with the Artin conductor defined by Kato and Matsuda; and if F assigns to X the group of integrable rank $1$ connections (in characteristic $0$ ), then it agrees with the irregularity. We also show that this machinery gives rise to a conductor for torsors under finite flat group schemes over the base field, which we believe to be new. We introduce a general notion of conductors on presheaves with transfers and show that on a reciprocity sheaf, the motivic conductor is minimal and any conductor which is defined only for henselian discrete valuation fields of geometric type with perfect residue field can be uniquely extended to all such fields without any restriction on the residue field. For example, the Kato–Matsuda Artin conductor is characterised as the canonical extension of the classical Artin conductor defined in the case of a perfect residue field.

The aim of this paper is to study all the natural first steps of the minimal model program for the moduli space of stable pointed curves. We prove that they admit a modular interpretation, and we study their geometric properties. As a particular case, we recover the first few Hassett–Keel log canonical models. As a by-product, we produce many birational morphisms from the moduli space of stable pointed curves to alternative modular projective compactifications of the moduli space of pointed curves.

For a unitary unramified genuine principal series representation of a covering group, we study the associated R-group. We prove a formula relating the R-group to the dimension of the Whittaker space for the irreducible constituents of such a principal series representation. Moreover, for certain saturated covers of a semisimple simply connected group, we also propose a simpler conjectural formula for such dimensions. This latter conjectural formula is verified in several cases, including covers of the symplectic groups.

The general position hypothesis needs strengthening.

Since Faltings proved Mordell’s conjecture in [16] in 1983, we have known that the sets of rational points on curves of genus at least $2$ are finite. Determining these sets in individual cases is still an unsolved problem. Chabauty’s method (1941) [10] is to intersect, for a prime number p, in the p-adic Lie group of p-adic points of the Jacobian, the closure of the Mordell–Weil group with the p-adic points of the curve. Under the condition that the Mordell–Weil rank is less than the genus, Chabauty’s method, in combination with other methods such as the Mordell–Weil sieve, has been applied successfully to determine all rational points in many cases.

Minhyong Kim’s nonabelian Chabauty programme aims to remove the condition on the rank. The simplest case, called quadratic Chabauty, was developed by Balakrishnan, Besser, Dogra, Müller, Tuitman and Vonk, and applied in a tour de force to the so-called cursed curve (rank and genus both $3$ ).

This article aims to make the quadratic Chabauty method small and geometric again, by describing it in terms of only ‘simple algebraic geometry’ (line bundles over the Jacobian and models over the integers).

The goal of this article is to extend the work of Voevodsky and Morel on the homotopy t-structure on the category of motivic complexes to the context of motives for logarithmic schemes. To do so, we prove an analogue of Morel’s connectivity theorem and show a purity statement for $({\mathbf {P}}^1, \infty )$ -local complexes of sheaves with log transfers. The homotopy t-structure on ${\operatorname {\mathbf {logDM}^{eff}}}(k)$ is proved to be compatible with Voevodsky’s t-structure; that is, we show that the comparison functor $R^{{\overline {\square }}}\omega ^*\colon {\operatorname {\mathbf {DM}^{eff}}}(k)\to {\operatorname {\mathbf {logDM}^{eff}}}(k)$ is t-exact. The heart of the homotopy t-structure on ${\operatorname {\mathbf {logDM}^{eff}}}(k)$ is the Grothendieck abelian category of strictly cube-invariant sheaves with log transfers: we use it to build a new version of the category of reciprocity sheaves in the style of Kahn-Saito-Yamazaki and Rülling.

We propose a conjecture that the Galois representation attached to every Hilbert modular form is noncritical and prove it under certain conditions. Under the same condition we prove Chida, Mok and Park’s conjecture that Fontaine-Mazur L-invariant and Teitelbaum-type L-invariant coincide with each other.

In this article we generalise natural maps to measurable cocycles. Given a standard Borel probability $\Gamma $ -space $(X,\mu _X)$ , we assume that a measurable cocycle $\sigma :\Gamma \times X \rightarrow \operatorname {\mathrm {{\rm G}}}(m)$ admits an essentially unique boundary map $\phi :\partial _\infty \operatorname {\mathrm {\mathbb {H}^n_{{\rm K}}}} \times X \rightarrow \partial _\infty \operatorname {\mathrm {\mathbb {H}^m_{{\rm K}}}}$ whose slices $\phi _x:\operatorname {\mathrm {\mathbb {H}^n_{{\rm K}}}} \rightarrow \operatorname {\mathrm {\mathbb {H}^m_{{\rm K}}}}$ are atomless for almost every $x \in X$ . Then there exists a $\sigma $ -equivariant measurable map $F: \operatorname {\mathrm {\mathbb {H}^n_{{\rm K}}}} \times X \rightarrow \operatorname {\mathrm {\mathbb {H}^m_{{\rm K}}}}$ whose slices $F_x:\operatorname {\mathrm {\mathbb {H}^n_{{\rm K}}}} \rightarrow \operatorname {\mathrm {\mathbb {H}^m_{{\rm K}}}}$ are differentiable for almost every $x \in X$ and such that $\operatorname {\mathrm {\textrm {Jac}}}_a F_x \leq 1$ for every $a \in \operatorname {\mathrm {\mathbb {H}^n_{{\rm K}}}}$ and almost every $x \in X$ . This allows us to define the natural volume $\operatorname {\mathrm {\textrm {NV}}}(\sigma )$ of the cocycle $\sigma $ . This number satisfies the inequality $\operatorname {\mathrm {\textrm {NV}}}(\sigma ) \leq \operatorname {\mathrm {\textrm {Vol}}}(\Gamma \backslash \operatorname {\mathrm {\mathbb {H}^n_{{\rm K}}}})$ . Additionally, the equality holds if and only if $\sigma $ is cohomologous to the cocycle induced by the standard lattice embedding $i:\Gamma \rightarrow \operatorname {\mathrm {{\rm G}}}(n) \leq \operatorname {\mathrm {{\rm G}}}(m)$ , modulo possibly a compact subgroup of $\operatorname {\mathrm {{\rm G}}}(m)$ when $m>n$ .

Given a continuous map $f:M \rightarrow N$ between compact hyperbolic manifolds, we also obtain an adaptation of the mapping degree theorem to this context.

We give an algebro-geometric construction of the Hitchin connection, valid also in positive characteristic (with a few exceptions). A key ingredient is a substitute for the Narasimhan–Atiyah–Bott Kähler form that realizes the Chern class of the determinant-of-cohomology line bundle on the moduli space of bundles on a curve. As replacement we use an explicit realisation of the Atiyah class of this line bundle, based on the theory of the trace complex due to Beilinson–Schechtman and Bloch–Esnault.
